This statue was erected in memory of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was born on 22 May 1859 close to where the statue stands in Picardy Place, Edinburgh - it commemorates the author and his famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.
It was unveiled on June 24, 1991. This photo was taken in 1993. The statue was subsequently removed in 2018 whilst tram works were undertaken on the street, then refurbished and re-instated in 2023
The statue was sculpted by Gerald Ogilvie Laing
Presented in honor of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday, part of my modest collection of Sherlock Holmes literature, original stories, references, and modern pastiche. You can read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's many original works online. (Sorry for the flash glare in the picture. Darn shiny books.)
First of all, "Sherlock" was folded by a dear friend of mine, Marijke Zoet, and she gave it to me as a present ;-)) I hope one day she will join us too and that is the reason why I made a photo of this model. Besides that it is a great design!
You can find the diagrams for this origami 'Sherlock Holmes' in the book: ORIGAMI VIP - Carlos González Santamaría
Dr. Watson recounts an adventure that started on 20 March 1888. While the currently married Watson is paying Holmes a visit, a masked visitor arrives, introducing himself as Count Von Kramm, an agent for a wealthy client. Holmes quickly deduces that the visitor is in fact Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein and the hereditary King of Bohemia. Realizing Holmes has seen through his guise, the King admits this and tears off his mask.
It transpires that the King is to become engaged to Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meiningen, a young Scandinavian princess. However, five years before the events of the story he had enjoyed a liaison with a "well-known adventuress", the American opera singer Irene Adler, whilst she was prima donna of the Imperial Opera of Warsaw. She has since retired and now lives in London. Fearful that should the strictly principled family of his fiancée learn of this impropriety, the marriage would be called off, he had sought to regain letters and a photograph of Adler and himself together, which he had sent to her during their relationship as a token. The King's agents have tried to recover the photograph through sometimes forceful means, burglary, stealing her luggage, and waylaying her. An offer to pay for the photograph and letters was also refused. With Adler threatening to send them to his future in-laws, which the King presumes is intended to prevent him from marrying any other woman, he makes the incognito visit to Holmes to request his help in locating and obtaining the photograph.
The photograph is described to Holmes as a cabinet (5½ by 4 inches) and therefore too bulky for a lady to carry upon her person. As regards expenses, the King says Holmes has carte blanche and gives him £1,000, exclaiming "I would give one of the provinces of my kingdom to have that photograph!" Holmes asks Dr. Watson to join him at 221B Baker Street at 3 o'clock the following afternoon.
Scavenger Hunt Day is May 24
A scavenger hunt is a game where individuals or teams compete to find items or perform tasks provided to them as a list by the organizers of the game. The aim of the game is for participants to fulfill the requirements on the list. Usually, at the end of the hunt a grand prize awaits the first person/ team to reach the end of the list. Scavenger hunts combine aspects of racing, competitive hunting, and hide and seek.
In many hunts, the organizers hide items in difficult to find places and give the participants clues on how and where to find them. Other hunts may require contestants to complete a route.
In recent years, technology has alleviated the way the game is played and has made it possible for players around the world to participate in scavenger hunts. Internet scavenger hunts require people to surf online and visit websites to find clues and solve problems.
Geocaching is yet another recent innovation in the world of scavenger hunting. It is the use of Global Positioning system (GPS) receivers to find caches or geocaches hidden at different spots around the world. A cache is usually a waterproof container that includes a log book and trinkets. Finders are required to leave their signature or name in the log book and may take a trinket out of the box as a way to remind them of their achievement. They must replace the trinket with another one of their choice and leave the cache in the same place they found it for others to find.
How Can You Celebrate Scavenger Hunt Day?
Organize a scavenger hunt for family and friends. To make it more interesting, include some attractive looking prizes and do it for charity.
Make work fun by doing a scavenger hunt at work during lunch time.
Participate in a scavenger hunt organized by your city or other local organizations.
Did You Know…
...that the word scavenger comes from the 14th-century English word scawageour? The word referred to officials that collected taxes.
Today, YOU get to participate in a simple ‘Scavenger Hunt’ and you don’t have to leave your house. Look at your desk or workstation (or your studio top table!) and see if you can find the items that Sherlock Holmes has found in my work area. Good luck. Count how many your find, and post the number. The one with the most items will get the famous “100% Full-Credit No-Prize Award.” </b/
Photo taken on our trip to London. Not the best lighting or composition but got a funny picture of Laika dressed as Sherlock Holmes and looking same direction as the silhouette behind her. Getting Laika to London from USA was a long trip (fly USA-->Paris, drive Paris-->Calais, Eurotunnel Calais-->Folkestone, drive Folkestone-->London) but we had no problem with paperwork (rather well organized) and London was very dog friendly (lots of parks, able to go off leash).

So I saw this Movie recommended on my Netflix, there were some aspects of it I was interested in, and then I saw this edit of a fighting scene where he keeps on hitting this guy and keeps saying "Discombobulate", it was the funniest thing I saw, and apparently there was a sequel to the movie and there's going to be a third one in 2021. I like how this one turned out, he has a nice scult for his bowler cap/hair, and the stubble looks good too.

I took this knowing little detail of the statue would show, it was the silhouette I was trying to capture. The slight highlighting on the body against the blackness of the face really works for me.

In the Sherlock Holmes stories, the landlady of 221B Baker Street is known as Mrs. Hudson. She is the one who provides lodging and meals for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. While her first name isn't explicitly stated in the original stories, some speculation exists, and some commentators have identified her with the "Martha" mentioned in "His Last Bow".

Ingleton is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England.
Ingleton is a thriving Yorkshire Dales village located between the market towns of Settle, Kirkby Lonsdale and Hawes. It is situated on the borders of North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire.
Known as the “Land of Waterfalls and Caves”, the village is most famous for its Waterfalls Trail, White Scar Caves, the Yorkshire Three Peaks and Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle train line.
All that remains of a railway in the village is the landmark Ingleton Viaduct. Ingleton Viaduct is a Grade II listed structure in the village.
Arthur Conan Doyle was a regular visitor to the area and was married locally, as his mother lived at Masongill from 1882 to 1917. There is growing evidence to support a claim that the inspiration for the name Sherlock Holmes came from here.
This area of Craven is best known for its natural landmarks, since the parish includes the summits of two of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Ingleborough and Whernside.
Tourism, mostly from hiking and caving, accounts for most of the economic activity of the village, especially in spring and summer.
