"221B Baker Street" is one of the most famous addresses in the world… And for Christmas, the privately run Sherlock Holmes Museum, dedicated to the famous fictional detective, has taken on a festive look.
The Georgian town house which the museum occupies was built in 1815. It was formerly used as a boarding house from 1860 to 1936. It covers the period of 1881 to 1904 when the stories describe Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson residing there as tenants of Mrs Hudson.
The museum actually lies between numbers 237 and 241, near the north end of Baker Street in central London, close to Regent's Park.
From the back cover:
THE HOUND MEANT DEATH
The ancient legend of the savage hound that first made its appearance at the horrible death of the drunken Hugo Baskerville, persisted in the family history, along with the fact that many of the male Baskervilles died violent and unnatural deaths. It was the mysterious death of the contemporary head of the family, and the report that the legendary hound had been seen again that brought Sherlock Holmes upon the scene. Then, with a background of the Devon moors, he solves a mystery and averts another tragedy by those unique methods of deduction which have turned this immortal character of fiction into a being almost as real as flesh and blood.
I made a New Year's Resolution to put more Lego stuff up on Flickr, and it being Sherlock Holmes' birthday today, this seemed like a good subject.
If you want to see a full creation featuring Holmes, I highly recommend Legohaulic's wonderful Victorian Holmes scene.
Short blogpost here.

Though not the first fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the best known, with Guinness World Records listing him as the "most portrayed movie character" in history. Holmes's popularity and fame are such that many have believed him to be a real individual rather than a fictional character.

“There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.”
No **** it`s Sherlock : )
The world famous consulting detective Sherlock Holmes lived at 221b Baker Street between 1881-1904, according to the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Mr Holmes shared his rooms with his loyal friend and colleague Dr Watson. The house is protected by the government due to its "special architectural and historical interest" and the 1st floor study overlooking Baker Street is still faithfully maintained for posterity as it was kept in Victorian Times.
Having problems, Sherlock?
"No, I am not. I have this completely under control."
You're all tangled up.
"No, I'm not."
"You are. You so totally are."
"Shut up!"

This is a linocut illustration of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock from the recent BBC tv series. I will be making more illustrations of geek heroes from tv, next up Sarah Lund from The Killing. Visit my Linocutboy blog to read about my linocuts and linocuts in general.

Despite it being his famous tag line, Holmes never actually said 'Elementary, my dear Watson.' The closest he gets is in the story 'The Crooked Man' when, after Watson cries ... 'Excellent!' Sherlock dryly replies, 'Elementary.'
