I think this is perhaps as cheapy a setup (aside from the flashes) that you can get. Can be made cheaper by substituting the black foam card with black paper.

The thinking for this setup is that although our lightsource (white paper) is a reflected one we don't need too much light to light up the front of the phone as the phone's front panel is actually highly reflective itself.

Secondly, I wanted the main lightsource to come from behind the phone so you can partially make out the shape of the phone, whilst keeping the majority of it a mystery.

The final result.

My set-up for the image Hooloovoo.

I know those lights are pretty abysmal but they did the job and I can't afford anything fancy...

Basically what I was doing was dropping blue food colouring into a glass beaker with a pipette and snapping away as fast as the poor little camera could manage. Post production work involved some white balance to get rid of the yellow light, a little bit of contrast and cloning to remove some marks on the glass. Oh and I flipped the images, not sure why but I prefer them that way :P

I wanted to have a really small aperture to add the star-shaped defraction from the LED lights without blowing things out too badly. So I needed to hit the flash twice and add extra light to my face. I wanted to use my other flash with a tight snoot, but the batteries were flat. Diane got home about that time, so I had her paint me with a flashlight instead.

Overall sequence was: turn out the overhead fluorescent lights, tape the LED lights to my eyelids, open the shutter, have Diane paint my face with a regular flashlight for 4 seconds, trigger the background flash twice and close the shutter. Total elapsed time: 14 seconds.

No està mostrat a la foto, però just davant del flash s'hi posa una cartolina perquè no s'escapi algun raig que ens pugui enlluernar la lent.

In the 4-H Table Setting Contest at the Lancaster County Super Fair, youth select a theme and display one place setting, including table covering, dishes, glassware, silverware, centerpiece and menu. Youth choose one of the following categories: formal, casual, picnic or birthday.

Latest setup as of 1.3.10. I have more use of my desk this way

The coccoon was made out of a mesh pull laundry basket. I used clamp light and used my bar stools as a tripod.

1 Canon 580EXII flash set to Manual at 1/4 power mounted on a PocketWizard FlexTT5 triggered by another FlexTT5 on camera acting as pure transmitter.

I initially used the umbrella but the fruits are still casting some shadows. I decided to bounce the flash off the ceiling. That worked.

I did not remove the umbrella even though I have no use for it... unless it also worked as a bounce from the light from the window

This is the first setup I used for this project. I didn't use it much, only to drill 2 pilot holes in tube 2. (3x3 cm).

It can be improved by adding another dumbbell and a vise to clamp the second tube while drilling, or replacing the vises with F clamps (clamping the tubes to the dumbbells of equal height).

I didn't follow all the basic safety rules with this setup (didn't have goggles or gloves).

Tools:

Hammer + dimpling tool? to make dimples in the aluminum

Prokress PK 500 SB drill

Drill bits: 5.5 mm HSS Black oxide 92x59 mm, 2.5 mm HSS Black oxide 62x36 mm

Blue metalworking vise, 60 mm jaw

Hand vise (metallic color one), 45 mm jaw

2x Dumbbells, 3 kg (initially each fully assembled would weigh 5 kg and have 10x 0.5 kg rings)

20 cm stainless steel ruler, plastic 3-inch, 9 cm right angle ruler

A pencil

"Studio" setup for the dead moth macro shots. Eos 7D, Canon 15-85 IS EF-S, two auto extension tubes, Manfrotto tripod, Speedlite 430 EXII (usually hand-held at different angles). Flash triggered wirelessly from the 7D, whose flash acts as the master but does not fire.

close up of my MacBook

Setup used for the "Smoke C" series, with Sigma EF-500 DG Super used in slave mode with a Cactus wireless trigger.

I took this picture with a Canon A540, and the flash was triggered by the camera's own little flash!
