LSL D6817 (Ex Colas 37521) arrives at Settle on a superb sunny morning working the 0835 Skipton to Appleby service. Travelling in that ex GA Mark 3 stock was a bit weird to say the least.

The only bloom this year on my new clematis. I love how it has gone from almost all white and is now developing the most gorgeous purple and yellow hues. I'm looking forward to next year when more of them appear as the plant settles into its new environment.
Thank you to everyone who pauses long enough to look at my photo. All comments and Faves are very much appreciated

In addition to offering a target-rich environment for wildlife photography, the bayou system, and Horsepen Bayou in particular, provides a variety of dynamic lighting options from open expanses at sunrise and sunset to shaded banks through mid-morning and afternoon. This Little Blue Heron caught the light just before arriving at its honey hole under the trees for a morning snack.
Ok, ok! I will share!

British Railways Class 5MT 45212 passes Settle Junction on 1z60 1521 Carlisle - Nottingham Northern Belle on 26/10/2024
The Settle - Carlisle Railway is without doubt one of Britain's most spectacular railway lines.
Starting out from the gentle limestone uplands around Settle in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales the line heads north up Ribblesdale between the towering gritstone capped fells of Yorkshire's famous Three Peaks - Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent (with some particularly good views of the latter being seen on passing through Horton-in-Ribblesdale).
At the head of Ribblesdale the line climbs onto open moorland and across the 24 span viaduct at Ribblehead, before entering the one and a half miles of the Blea Moor Tunnel under the eastern flank of Whernside.
The line emerges into Dentdale (one of the more remote - and dramatic - northern dales) at Dent Head and then on through more tunnels to Garsdale Head (at the head of Garsdale) before descending in to Mallerstang Common (actually a deep mountain valley) - at the end of which the line passes by Kirkby Stephen, through Appleby in Westmorland and along the Eden Valley up to the northern terminus at Carlisle.
Those who have travelled in Settle to Carlisle railway may end up telling you that it is a “once in a lifetime” experience which every individual should feel at least once in their life. They are not exaggerating the facts because the bliss of watching some of the most beautiful scenery while commuting from one place to another is unmatched.

My lucky morning... When I heard a bunch of geese squawking, I looked up, saw they were heading my way and assumed they'd just fly on by, as they always do. But then I saw they were dropping altitude and setting their wings, and by gosh, they were coming in for a landing right at my feet! I was caught so much off guard, I almost forgot I had a camera hanging from my neck, but managed to grab it in time to get some shots, a couple of which I thought were Flickr worthy. And, of course, I had to mess with this one a bit to make it Sliders Sunday worthy.
HSS!

The common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous, semiaquatic mammal and ungulate native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus. The name comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse". After the elephant and rhinoceros, the common hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl.
Common hippos are recognisable by their barrel-shaped torsos, wide-opening mouths revealing large canine tusks, nearly hairless bodies, columnar legs and large size. Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it is capable of running 30 km/h over short distances.
The common hippopotamus inhabits rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of five to thirty females and young. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grasses. While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land.
The hippopotamus is among the most dangerous animals in the world as it is highly aggressive and unpredictable. They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth.
These two massive male Hippo's were photographed settling their differences in the good old fashioned way in the Hyena dam at Nairobi National Park, Kenya.
