WEEK 40 – HLT Fall Photoset, Part I

Luckily, the inside hadn't changed: never mind that this photo was taken in July, before the repainting, haha. On that matter, I've got over 100 pics in my vault from this place, including ones I recently took that I desperately want to share... but I'm forcing myself to stick with the 30 I chose before I took those, because if I keep uploading the new pics I'll never get to these ones!

Anyway: this is the Guest Services area, accessible from the entry vestibule. Since this store does not have a pharmacy, this is Horn Lake's only example of the wavy neon squiggling into legibility.

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)

This unique building was built with fossilized stone and petrified wood in the 1920's. It was a hot spot for illegal alcohol (Moonshine) during Prohibition. Across the road was a roadhouse of same material that was used as a speakeasy. Glen Rose was known as moonshine capital of Texas with rumors of Bonnie and Clyde visiting.

I heard the city and Athens got into a dispute and in return, Athens shut down both yards they had there and turned this one into a bin refurbishment shop in retaliation. Apparently the bins that come here are real nasty so residents get upset with the smell.

Having completed all of the day's scheduled runs and having left the passenger consist at Freeport Station, Boothbay's Henschel #6 undergoes servicing at the pit just outside Thorndike Station. The Boothbay operation typically works with a 2-person train crew, consisting of an Engineer/Fireman and a Conductor. The Engineer is responsible for all servicing before and after the day's operation. Here, we see that the Engineer has attached the water tower's spout to the locomotive's fill-pipe and the tank, which resides between the frame rails and below the boiler, is now being filled. Shortly, the Engineer will walk around to the Fireman's side, and empty several large scoops of anthracite coal into the bunker just in front of the cab. After oiling around just a bit, he will then back the locomotive to the engine shed, which is on a little siding, perhaps 200 ft behind the location pictured here.

Whilst we are busy chasing the former JPT buses that have been repainted into Stagecoach colours here’s a reminder of the scene the day after the announcement that Stagecoach had been cleared by the mergers people regarding the acquisition of JPT. Most if not all of the JPT vehicles were quickly parked up following the Friday services and I think all were despatched to Hyde Road over the weekend. Only a couple returned still in JPT colours having gained Stagecoach vinyls but no such luck for this ageing Olympian one of a pair purchased by JPT, both were used for a while by Stagecoach until the takeover date but despite having just gained a twelve month MOT both remain out of service and are unlikely to return. The two Plaxton President Volvo B7’s behind were just two of nine to see service with Stagecoach and both have since received corporate colours although we wait for 16968 to return to service.

Though perhaps not as picturesque as yesterday's image of the waterworks in Wicklow, the engineering efforts involved in this viaduct and railway cutting are impressive in their own right. Labeled in the catalogue as "Kilcoltrim cutting to North, Borris, Co. Carlow", the greenery in this shot suggests that services on this line had been curtailed by the time of the photo.

Speaking of which, owing to a localised and temporary "Mary shortage", there will be limited service on our Flickr stream also. With no new postings. Just for a couple of days. Normal services will resume week starting 28 May :) Which is almost certainly more than can be said for services on this branch of the GS&WR line(?).....

DublinBus (Donnybrook) SG229

This update starts in Co.Wicklow, but covers a selection of South Dublin routes!

Starting off here with DublinBus SG229, it is noted here in Enniskerry Village operating a 185 from Enniskerry to Bray. Enniskerry is a small, rural village in the Wicklow mountains just south of County Dublin, and is served by two bus routes- the 44 which serves Kiltiernan and Dundrum on its way into the city centre, before snaking northside up through Drumcondra to DCU, and the 185 to Bray.

The 185 is an interesting route, being operated by DublinBus yet not actually operating within either Dublin City or Dublin County. It is of further interest due to its timetable- it operates hourly from Enniskerry, with several different route and terminus variations in between. Additionally, it also has one of the latest departure times on the network- most final buses leave their terminus' at 2330, a 185 leaves Enniskerry at 2345. The only other later example that comes to mind is the 0020 departure of the 65 from Blessington on the weekends, but no doubt there are some others!

SG229 is noted here in Enniskerry operating the 0915 185 exShopRiver. The 44 terminates where I was standing, and offers a very scenic backdrop. A photo was not possible on this day however due to a van blocking the front of the bus, so I decided to leave that photo for another day. I will however return to the 44 later in this update and in the next.
