St. Mary's by the Sea in its idyllic location looking out to the Coral Sea (even though it looks like a blizzard) in Port Douglas, tropical Far North Queensland. St Mary's by the Sea. During the day, the church is open to the public but unstaffed and as such the altar is left bare to avoid theft.

"The iconic St Mary's by The Sea chapel is one of the most picturesque churches in the country. However, it's wooden and stained glass interior also holds a vivid history.

According to the Douglas Shire Historical Society, the church was blessed and opened on March 6, 1881 on Grant Street. A temporary chapel, later to become the Presbytery, was built in 1878 at an unknown location.

However, the presbytery and church were completely destroyed by a cyclone on March 16, 1911, which left only seven out of 57 houses in the Port Douglas standing and 100 people homeless.

A new presbytery was soon built on the Grant Street site and the second St Mary's was opened and blessed on August 30, 1914.

Come 1986, St Mary's was the only church left in Port Douglas and in danger of being demolished. This was a time of intense development for the town and many buildings had already been demolished. To the local townspeople, it became imperative that the last remaining church of historical significance should be preserved.

The then Douglas Shire Council provided a site at Dixie Street, bordering Market Park, on the undertaking that the relocation work, restoration and ongoing upkeep and maintenance would never become a burden on the ratepayer.

St Mary's church was finally transported to the present site near the Sugar Wharf on November 11, 1988, beginning a long year of restoration by Port Douglas Restoration Society, originally the "Save the Church" group.

After its transportation to the new site, it was renamed St. Mary's by the Sea and underwent tremendous restoration under the guidance of the Port Douglas Restoration Society, with much fund-raising, generosity and goodwill by the local townspeople, finally becoming the much loved icon that it is today.

St Mary's by the Sea is now one of the oldest buildings in Port Douglas and is a non-denominational place of worship and for the conduct of Port Douglas weddings, christenings, memorial services and funerals.

Set in tranquil tropical gardens and parks, the church is surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery including views of the Coral Sea and the surrounding mountain ranges, which can be viewed from inside the church via the magnificent glass altar window.

Ornate tropical flowers are also featured in the stained glass, with highly polished pews and white painted interior making the ideal Port Douglas venue for weddings with couples from across the globe choosing to exchange their vows at the lovely chapel.

I had promised to upload a shot of WCS195 which was for me the pick of the Strachans bodied AEC Regent Vs. It was the only example to lose it's maroon tween decks band and receive the elevated fleetname as shown here, although it retained it's smart maroon mudguards. Buses of the owner Hill were characterised by a silver star on the front grille.

This was the image prepared in first of the livery of Weardale Motor Services of Stanhope, County Durham - an operator with an exceptionally high standard of turnout. Fortunately it's still with us and, it would seem, doing very well with an expanding fleet in a predominantly white livery. Here we turn the clock back to the company's traditional livery.

I first came across Weardale on a regular basis in the early 1980s, when it was building up an impressive fleet of second-hand, traditional double-deckers for school contracts. Rumour was that it wanted a Routemaster, but this was probably wishful thinking by enthusiasts and it simply didn't happen. The company had hoped to have YUP 6, its preserved Leyland PD2, fully restored for its 85th birthday in 2007. When it became clear that it wouldn't make it in time, I decided to turn out a Routemaster in this commemorative livery. I think that it looks rather good.

Union Pacific GP9 No. 299 leads the St. John Local across 3rd North Street in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 29, 1977. It was built by EMD for the Union Pacific in Sept. 1954, equipped with a steam generator and an 800 gallon water tank for system wide passenger service. The steam generator was removed in 1972 and a 2400 gallon fuel tank installed. The 299 was retired from the roster in July 1982 and sold for scrap to General Metals in Tacoma, Washington on December 24, 1982. (Info via UtahRails.net)

Still in business today, Balfour Beatty has been a major player in the UK construction and civil engineering markets. Founded in 1909, its initial operations focused on tramways, with a notable presence in the East Midlands. That activity led Balfour Beatty to diversify into power generation and general contracting, playing a key role in the development of Britain’s National Grid. During the same 1930s period, Balfour Beatty replaced the trams with buses at its subsidiary companies.

Just three bus companies remained on Balfour Beatty’s books when it decided to exit the market at the end of the 1940s. Thus, Midland General, Notts & Derby and Mansfield District were sold to the state-controlled British Transport Commission. Previously major buyers of AEC and Leyland buses, the ex-Balfour Beatty bus fleets then took a steady influx of standard Bristol/Eastern Coachworks vehicles. However, the old liveries were retained, together with other details (eg destination layouts) that differentiated the fleets from the general BTC run of the mill.

This view at Newark Bus Station proved to be the sole occasion I photographed buses of the former Balfour Beatty bus fleets: all three companies lost their identities soon afterwards under National Bus Company management. On the left is Mansfield & District 545 (24MNN), a Bristol FLF6G Lodekka new in 1963. Its companion is 104 ( JNU993D), a 1966 dual-purpose Bristol MW6G that was registered by Midland General Omnibus but seen here in service with Mansfield District.
