Virginia Sea Grant 2020 Commonwealth Fellow Nicki Gustafson travels to multiple creek sites in and around Roanoke, Virginia to deploy water quality sensors in streams with impaired water quality. Many of these streams are critical for native brook trout, which need low temperatures during the breeding season.

Circuit is powered from 5V readout circuit.
R1 sets the U1 LED current to 20mA. Photo transistor picks up reflections from items passing in front of the sensor and turns on when they do generating a positive pulse on pin 4.
R2, R3, C1 and Q1 generate a variable DC load. In this way variations in ambient light that the photo-transistor might pick up are removed. The result is the signal on U1 pin4 under static conditions is constant.
The low pass of R2 and C1 mean signals from passing reflector are not attenuated and pass on to the comparator circuit.
The combination of R21 and R39 ensure the voltage on U4 pin3 under static conditions is always slightly less than the voltage on IC4 pin 2. This ensures the comparator output is low in the absence of a signal.
C24 ensures the voltage on IC4 pin 2 does not react to fast signals but IC4 pin 3 does see these fast changes.
When an item is detected by the photo-transistor the voltage on U1 pin4 rises rapidly. IC4 pin3 sees the rising voltage which will rise above the voltage on IC4 pin 2, changing the comparator output state to a high signal.
Comparator is a push-pull output type so does not require a pull-up resistor. Pulses from comparator are passed on to the display to show speed of the sensor.
The completed solar sensor with additional sealant added around the washer and base. It can still be gripped ok for insertion into the socket. A fatter washer would have helped.
Professor Yan Li is leading the effort to design new materials for self-powering sensors that can withstand higher temperatures than conventional sensor materials.
“For sensing, energy storage, and energy harvesting capability in space, temperature tolerance is important,” says Li, adding current materials lose all functionality at more than 200 degrees Celsius.

Het ingraveren van eigen naam op eigen mobiel is erg populair.
