Located at the former Erie Railroad Newfoundland station is a semaphore signal, still standing out of service as a piece of Erie Railroad memorabilia. Here, NYS&W SU-100X passes the relic on its way to Croxton.
I return to the Land of Enchantment once again to shoot the semaphores aligning the BNSF Raton and Glorieta Subdivisions on the route of the Southwest Chief. These will likely not live beyond 2019, so I anticipate grieving their loss. In the meantime, they still work hard on the New Mexico plains.
FGLK GS-2 departs Solvey NY and are seen passing the old semaphore signal that protects the yard limits in town.
On a calm and quiet afternoon, a pair of semaphore signals guard the west switch at Levy. In the desolate high plains of Northeastern New Mexico, semaphore signals still stand tall along the BNSF Raton Subdivision. The question now becomes "but for how much longer?"

By 1986, there weren't very many semaphore signals in service on California railroads. This pair stood guard at the west switch of Hilt siding, a couple of miles inside the Golden State. These signals were removed a few years later, when Southern Pacific made the Siskiyou Line dark territory between Ashland and Black Butte.

Despite most semaphore signals being taken out of regular service years and years ago, it is quite surprising how many of these unique signals still stand alongside railroad tracks, operative or not. One of such cases is the distant signal for the NS interchange with the CNUR in downtown New Castle. The signal has long been taken out of service, but still sits right beside the New Castle Depot as it did in Nickel Plate Days. The Depot is now used as NS’s MOW office in New Castle, and now the CNUR ceases to exist, as their lease expired and NS took over operations once again starting today. The engine pictured (WBCR 6, an ex IC GP11 rebuild) is now back at home on the Wabash Central, where it was originally based on before coming to New Castle nearly 10 years ago, and the CNUR is now another short line in the history books. Pictured; after a short day working Neal Scrap Metals, the only customer on the CNUR, the train begins to finish up the day, perfectly framed by the station and the default semaphore signal for the NS interchange. In the background NS 143, a near 260 car monster freight is creeping south. Conductor Branden Bailey (pictured) mentions to me how trains can’t be and shouldn’t ever be that long or problems will occur. He would be correct, as the train would stall out climbing the hill at Hagerstown about a half hour later.
The Semaphore Tower is located on Chatley Heath. The Tower was once part of a chain which was used to pass messages between the Admiralty in Whitehall and the Royal Naval Dockyard in Portsmouth , sort of a very early telegraph system using line of sight tower sending messages in Semaphore instead of wires . It was built in 1822 and is now the only restored surviving tower in a line of signalling stations that stretched from London to Portsmouth. The Tower is open to the public once a month between March and September - not sure since Covid though .

It’s good to know there are still tucked away places in UK where semaphores abound. Peak Forest in Derbyshire is one such location. In this scene, 60044, 'Dowlow', having moved box wagons with aggregate in the left siding, returns to the stabling point. Meanwhile, 66176 behind, will depart shortly with the 6H52 Dowlow Briggs to Ashburys.
Signals BS27 and BS33 at Banbury, with Banbury South Box behind. 21st May 2011. These two traditional GWR lower-quadrant signals were actually installed in 2010 in order to facilitate the speedy turnaround of diverted First Great Western services during the Reading remodelling. They were removed in 2016 when Banbury itself was remodelled and resignalled.

This Semaphore Saturday we'll make a quick stop at an iconic place where I've yet to photograph a train.
This is for Gionni and Dianna, your stunning work has been an inspiration, so the other night I decided to have a go at HDR. i hope I've done justice to it. This image I posted when I first joined Flickr, and it's always been a favourite of my, but I.m just blown away by the endless possibilities with HDR..
i love it. Please give me your honest opinions, where I've gone wrong and how I can improve it. Iknow it's early days and I have a lot to learn.
