This beautiful small fly with a real mouthful of a name is one of two species of long-legged flies (Dolichopodidae) that have turned up in the garden. This species is easy to identify due to its white wing tips that give it its common name of semaphore fly.
An unusual, pandemic-shortened Southwest Chief is framed by the MP 717 semaphores as it scoots westward on the Raton Subdivision between Colmor and Levy, NM. A couple days later, signal cabinets and concrete bases were dropped at several locations on this portion of the line, including here. Thus, this may in fact be the last shot from this spot "as-is" without a giant shiny silver box directly behind the westbound signal.
The Semaphores at Colmor await another train while the town of Springer lights up the New Mexico sky.
having bluebirds nesting near the house alerted me to the fact that in addition to vocalizations, birds "talk with their hands". the bluebird was looking at her mate and spreading the wings in a sequence that must mean something to him. they do that more often than all the others species nesting or feeding on our property. at present they are feeding brood two, with five chicks. three survived from brood one and are hanging out together by the mealworm feeder.

The original Semaphore tower was built in 1833 and was erected on the roof of the Rigging House and Sail Loft buildings in Portsmouth as the terminal station of the London – Portsmouth Semaphore Line. However, this tower was destroyed in a fire in 1913 and the tower we see today was opened in 1930.
313209 departs Bognor Regis wit the 2P77 1236 to Barnham. Despite the red tail lights she was defo running towards me and seconds later the driver activated the headlights and turned the tail lights off. This class of unit was introduced in 1976/77 seeing work firstly on the Great Northern. I think I remember seeing them at Kings Cross. 19 313/2 sets were transferred to Brighton in 2010 for use with Southern Coastway services. These units have lasted a very long time considering they don’t have any onboard toilets.
I really like the mint and ivory livery.
They look at home amongst the semaphores at Bognor.
On June 21st a large event was held in Hrusovany nad Jeviskovu in southern Moravia in Czech Republic to bid farewell to the semaphore signals there. (only in CZ!) A number of special trains operated around the station, including photo freights! For those who bought a photo pass, timetables were also provided for the transfer moves to Hrusovany. On the evening of the 20th the 751 207 was planned to bring the freight train consist along with a motorcar set tacked on the rear from Brno to Hrusovany. Armed with the timetable I headed to Moravské Bránice where the light should be good for the planned time. The planned time came and went, but without the train. Thanks to the very helpful station master, I learned that the train would be about an hour and a half late. This meant that it should be photographable on the towering Ivančic viaduct. The delay was a blessing in disguise and I along with only one other photographer could capture the attractive Bardotka soaring over the Jihlava river. The bridge was built in 1978, replacing an even more spindly looking bridge from 1868. A short bit of the original bridge can be seen in the background and is preserved as a monument.
“Proceed from CTC Paradise to CTC St. Regis on main track” I can still hear it.
I regularly shot the Q on it's approaching into Denver so it was amusing to see it here when only 5 semaphores remained. Better late than never, too bad the leader was a repaint.

Semaphore, located on the Lefevre Peninsula northwest of Adelaide, Australia, is a charming coastal town. Established in 1849, its name originates from a signaling station used to communicate the arrival of ships. The area is renowned for its white sandy beach, historic jetty, and vibrant foreshore lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops. Attractions include the Time Ball Tower, built in 1875, and Art Deco-style buildings. Semaphore also offers recreational activities such as mini golf and carousel rides. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, seeking to enjoy the sun and history in a picturesque setting.
Cool temperatures and rain consisted most of the afternoon weather on July 20, 2015 at Amtrak train No. 4 races east and will split the last semaphore signals on its eastbound trip at Robinson, New Mexico.
Sort of looks like she's sending signals with those arms. Sometimes these strike a nice symmetrical pose, and other times they just refuse. I tried to encourage the legs down, but nope. Last year's green crab was more cooperative - I was amused to see I'd taken a very similar photo when I looked through them, so it's just as well she left her arms up because I already got the 'normal' pose.

I wanted a head-on shot with the old NER signal gantry positioned just outside Harrogate station, this was the only viable composition that was straight into the sun creating silhouettes of everything in the scene.
Surprisingly this in not a monochrome image.
Another from my recent YouTube video from Harrogate and Knaresborough.

My plan was to photograph the 1902 Norwich to Lowestoft to combine with the setting sun.
The sun was due to set at 1946 and the train was due to arrive at 1949 I had hoped for a golden sky and nature obliged however the sun disappeared behind the rooftops 10 mins before the arrival of the train.....doh.
So here is the shot anyway minus the train. Replacement signals are in place and in a few weeks this beautiful scene will be gone forever.

On another scorching day in Sri Lanka we see Class M6 No. 789 at the head of IC train 1009 07:00 Colombo to Kandy. The train is seen departing Peredeniya Jn on the final part of its journey.
Semaphores line the signals bridges outside of C&NW's North Western station, but replacements are already installed but not yet in service. October 1988.
In a scene that was repeated twice a day for over 50 years (with a few exceptions), an Amtrak train blasts by the ATSF semaphores protecting the east switch of Chapelle siding in northern New Mexico.
Though with the loss of freight traffic over Raton and Glorieta Passes, Amtrak is now all there is through here. And that twist was really the secret to the longevity of these nearly century old sentries.
Sadly, the semaphores were removed in November 2022.

A perfectly placed gap in the trees provides just enough light to photograph 75 006 with train 16105 passing the semaphore at the south end of Belitza station. The entire Rhodope mountain line is still mostly operated with semaphore signals, a rarity in Bulgaria.
70812 is seen crossing the S&C at Hellifield, she is taking the freight only line to Daisyfield Junction at Blackburn working the 6J37 1252 Carlisle to Chirk log train.
I was in the area for a week photographing the comings and goings on the S&C, the Rylestone branch , Arnside and Newcastle meeting up with some 1Z10 chums.
Not strictly true, but the pole and bracket were replaced and fitted with the super safe ladders, and now dominate Langham Junction
