These mechanical semaphores are quickly being replaced with newer technology. I was glad to capture a few photos before they were gone.

I love this tower. Not sure why.

This was mostly a test-scan with my newly modified dSLR scanning rig. Happy with it. External light sources are mostly eliminated, and flash light is contained and only comes through the negative - less bleed = better scans.

Semaphore Beach is a long and picturesque coastal beach located northwest of Adelaide's city center, South Australia. Known for its wide stretches of white sand and calm waters, it's a popular destination for families and those seeking a relaxing day by the sea. The beach is dominated by the historic Semaphore Jetty, one of South Australia's longest, ideal for strolls and enjoying the views. Adjacent to the beach is the lively Semaphore Road, with its seaside village charm, offering eclectic shops, cafes, and ice cream parlors. During warmer months, the area comes alive with a beachside playground, miniature train, and Ferris wheel, providing extra entertainment. Semaphore Beach is renowned for its stunning sunsets, which paint the sky over the Gulf St Vincent. It's a place that combines natural coastal beauty with a family-friendly, leisurely atmosphere.

Heloecius cordiformis

The semaphore crab is a semiterrestral crab that can be found in the estuaries and mangrove swamps on the east coast of Australia.

The claws vary in colour according to size and sex. The smallest crabs have greenish claws and as the crab gets larger, they become orange and then eventually purple in colour.

The Semaphore Crabs move their claws up and down to signal to other crabs - hence their name.

Heloecius cordiformis is the only species in the genus Heloecius and the family Heloeciidae.

Replacement of the bulk of the remaining semaphore signals on the Cornish main line, together with GWR's decision to withdraw all of its remaining HST Castle Sets (plus a similar decision by Cross Country Trains), means that scenes like this will be history by the end of 2023.

Do you remeber when semaphores were still in use at Penzance? I always feel that locations were in some way 'lesser' once the old semaphores had gone.

Here we see unnamed Class50's 50038 50040 at Penzance on 9-9-77.

I had moved to Plymouth in August 1977, so the delights of Cornwall lay before me. Most of my photos from that era are in the ownership of my friend Martin Loader so you will have to wait for him to put them on one of his sites. You can see a few of these on Hondawanderer.co.uk under the Tom Derrington Railway Archive section.

This was taken in the morning so not the classic late afternoon view.

Thursday 9th November and with one day of operational service to go before demolition the semaphore signals of Blackpool North station are seen against the most amazing afterglow as the sun had set.

Arguably the most impressive display of semaphore signalling remaining on the national network will sadly be swept away in around 12 months time as part of the Preston - Blackpool North electrification project. The line is due to be closed for around 18 weeks over the winter of 2017/18, during which time Blackpool North station will be extensively remodelled, with the work due for completion by May 2018.

Here, 37425 is on the rear of a Blackpool North - Longsight test train (37601 was on the front), departing the terminus on Wed 29th April 2015.

Racing past the semaphores at MP1451.8 this short (120 axle) autorack train was absolutely flying at well over an estimated 60mph. A Cotton Belt GP60 leads a flared Southern Pacific SD40M and a Union Pacific Dash 8-40C. Chasing this was completely out of the question!

Semaphore sunset: the fine array of semaphore signals at Lowestoft are now on borrowed time and I was really pleased to be able to visit the station today to photograph them before they disappear (next March?). One of the new signals can be seen in place ready for the next stage of the signalling work. Class 170 DMU 170272 arrives at the station with the 2D84 1517 service from Ipswich.

This view of C&EI's Hoopeston tower was taken sometime in 1971 and is showing both the NKP train order signals (at right) and the C&EI's train order signals (at left). By this time though, the Louisville & Nashville had taken over the C&EI through here and the Norfolk & Western had the NKP side. This view is looking N/E towards the town of Hoopeston. This interlocking would be automated sometime in the early 1970's. The former NKP line would be abandoned in 1986. CSX still comes through here with a fair amount of traffic.

A modern high tech class 195 unit bound for Sheffield departs Edale on the Hope Valley line past the old mechanical technology from the steam age. 13-07-23.

Its been a frustrating 7 or so days of to many clouds or none at all.

Champagne problems eh.

Stitched this one together because I was interested if the comp worked or not???

I think it is interesting but its not quite the sky im after, would really love a few less clouds with a post sunset glow.

the original shot was much wider with the pier straight up the middle, but I felt this was a stronger crop.

There is one of those normally very annoying bright orange lights behind me, hence the warm light on the tower.

Got about 4 more days to nail it before we move on......

Have just started a blog with info on some of my photos and travel stories. I'm going to try and put a tip specific to each photo I put up. First tip was how to quickly accurately calculate long exposure times.

Semaphore Signal in Madison, GA

Maybe too much heat haze for those very long lenses, as a 170 passes through Wrawby Jnc.

Class 20 No's 20215 and 20142 head a shuttle away from Worksop during the Depot Open Day in September 1991. The shuttle ran between Worksop and Doncaster via Brancliffe Junction and Maltby.

Worksop had a fine array of semaphore signalling back in the day!

During my time living in Indiana, many a trip was made to this pair of semaphores on the south end of the Monon Subdivision on the CSX.

Most of my stuff was captured on film and old school video and getting that stuff onto Flickr is a WHOLE OTHER project!!

However, these semaphores did manage to make it to the digital age (for me) and I was able to grab a shot of some pretty new (at the time) CSX power passing by.

Amtrak train 3, the westbound Southwest Chief, is seen passing semaphores near Wagon Mound, New Mexico as it races across the prairie.

I was in Denver for a week and opted to take a day to drive to New Mexico to shoot these last few surviving semaphores, knowing their futures are uncertain and that they could be removed at any time. The signals at the north end of the siding these signals protect had already been replaced with "Vader" signals!

As of 9/8/21, I can confirm semaphores still stand at the following four locations:

35.390427, -105.331232 (single-track block)

36.015705, -104.701948 (end of siding)

36.043010, -104.692712 (single-track block)

36.073125, -104.688506 (end of siding, pictured)

I believe I saw at least one other location while racing from Wagon Mound to Bernal, but I don't recall precisely where.
