Over the bank holiday weekend W25 signal at Whittlesea was removed as part of the final works to re-signal the area.
Due to its proximity to the level crossing (which remains with its manually operated wooden gates), the signal has not been replaced.
Other signals in the area have been replaced by LED colour lights in a like-for-like replacement which retains control from Whittlesea Signal Box.

This was one of the hidden treasures on the BR&P 4th sub, a beat up, but active, semaphore for the Northbound approach to the diamond at Machias Jct., NY. The last RS-97 Chessie train before the R&S takeover passes the semaphore as Jeff Bochman leans out the window, possibly getting a photo of the trains power passing the signal? July 20, 1986.
Do you remeber when semaphores were still in use at Penzance? I always feel that locations were in some way 'lesser' once the old semaphores had gone.
Here we see unnamed Class50's 50038 50040 at Penzance on 9-9-77.
I had moved to Plymouth in August 1977, so the delights of Cornwall lay before me. Most of my photos from that era are in the ownership of my friend Martin Loader so you will have to wait for him to put them on one of his sites. You can see a few of these on Hondawanderer.co.uk under the Tom Derrington Railway Archive section.
This was taken in the morning so not the classic late afternoon view.

What? No train? I wish. I had to "settle" for this beautiful sunrise with semaphores on Winston Hill, west of Winston, Montana, in August 1995, on Montana Rail Link's 2nd Subdivision.

These mechanical semaphores are quickly being replaced with newer technology. I was glad to capture a few photos before they were gone.
On 27th October 1984 a Class 101 DMU leaves Hartlepool for Middlesbrough with a Newcastle to Middlesbrough service. Sadly the delightful bracket semaphore signals have long been removed.
I love this tower. Not sure why.
This was mostly a test-scan with my newly modified dSLR scanning rig. Happy with it. External light sources are mostly eliminated, and flash light is contained and only comes through the negative - less bleed = better scans.

Semaphore Beach is a long and picturesque coastal beach located northwest of Adelaide's city center, South Australia. Known for its wide stretches of white sand and calm waters, it's a popular destination for families and those seeking a relaxing day by the sea. The beach is dominated by the historic Semaphore Jetty, one of South Australia's longest, ideal for strolls and enjoying the views. Adjacent to the beach is the lively Semaphore Road, with its seaside village charm, offering eclectic shops, cafes, and ice cream parlors. During warmer months, the area comes alive with a beachside playground, miniature train, and Ferris wheel, providing extra entertainment. Semaphore Beach is renowned for its stunning sunsets, which paint the sky over the Gulf St Vincent. It's a place that combines natural coastal beauty with a family-friendly, leisurely atmosphere.

Heloecius cordiformis
The semaphore crab is a semiterrestral crab that can be found in the estuaries and mangrove swamps on the east coast of Australia.
The claws vary in colour according to size and sex. The smallest crabs have greenish claws and as the crab gets larger, they become orange and then eventually purple in colour.
The Semaphore Crabs move their claws up and down to signal to other crabs - hence their name.
Heloecius cordiformis is the only species in the genus Heloecius and the family Heloeciidae.

Replacement of the bulk of the remaining semaphore signals on the Cornish main line, together with GWR's decision to withdraw all of its remaining HST Castle Sets (plus a similar decision by Cross Country Trains), means that scenes like this will be history by the end of 2023.

Arguably the most impressive display of semaphore signalling remaining on the national network will sadly be swept away in around 12 months time as part of the Preston - Blackpool North electrification project. The line is due to be closed for around 18 weeks over the winter of 2017/18, during which time Blackpool North station will be extensively remodelled, with the work due for completion by May 2018.
Here, 37425 is on the rear of a Blackpool North - Longsight test train (37601 was on the front), departing the terminus on Wed 29th April 2015.

47 703 "Saint Mungo" heads a southbound WCML diversion on a winter Sunday in 1980. Why do they not use the S&C for diversions today?
Kentigern, known as Mungo, was an apostle of the Scottish Kingdom of Strathclyde in the late 6th century, and the founder and Patron Saint of the city of Glasgow.
The station building and canopy were in a very dilapidated condition at this time and seemed to be a prime candidate for demolition before restoration took place.
Taken at a time when there was a more relaxed attitude to health and safety and if I stood at this spot today I would be amongst the trees!
A scan of a very grainy 35mm image, must be on Ektachrome 400.

This view of C&EI's Hoopeston tower was taken sometime in 1971 and is showing both the NKP train order signals (at right) and the C&EI's train order signals (at left). By this time though, the Louisville & Nashville had taken over the C&EI through here and the Norfolk & Western had the NKP side. This view is looking N/E towards the town of Hoopeston. This interlocking would be automated sometime in the early 1970's. The former NKP line would be abandoned in 1986. CSX still comes through here with a fair amount of traffic.
