After burial and petrifaction, the brittle log is fractured by compaction and settling of the enclosing sediments, as well as by vibrations from occasional minor earthquakes. Once the log is exposed by erosion the segments can become separated.

Oct.30, 2018: The Western Wall, Wailing Wall, or Kotel, known in Islam as the Buraq Wall, is an ancient limestone wall in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a relatively small segment of a far longer ancient retaining wall, known also in its entirety as the "Western Wall".
Many important events took place on Mount Moriah, later known as the Temple Mount?
Mount Moriah, according to Jewish tradition, is the place where many pivotal events in Jewish history took place. Traditionally, creation of the world began from the Foundation Stone at the peak of the mountain. This is also where Adam, the first human, was created.
When Abraham was commanded to prepare his son Isaac for sacrifice, the father and son went up to “the place that God chooses” – Mount Moriah, and to its peak – the Foundation Stone – where the binding of Isaac took place.
Jacob’s dream (of angels ascending and descending a ladder) is linked to this mountain.
Later on, the Holy of Holies – the core and heart of the First and Second Temples - was built around the Foundation Stone.
In the year 37 BCE, Herod was appointed king in Jerusalem. He soon initiated a huge renovation project for the Temple. He hired many workers who toiled to make the Temple more magnificent and to widen the area of the Temple Mount by flattening the mountain peak and building four support walls around it. The Western Wall we know of, is one of these four support walls.
...there is no ancient Jewish tradition that designates the Western Wall as a sacred site. Instead, it was designated as a place of prayer less than five hundred years ago by a Muslim ruler. It took more than three centuries for the wall to attract the Jewish masses and, only in the last 150 years, has it become Judaism’s most sacred site. Yet, even if this place was not intrinsically holy (let alone as holy as the Temple Mount), or even if it had not been so designated by Suleyman the Great, it has become sanctified over time as Jews have increasingly utilized it for prayer.
I determine how many segments are needed, and how many rings in the bowl. The number of segments is determined by the design I come up with. As a rule for me, I stay with even numbers of segments, ranging from six to as many as 24 segments per ring. I do all my segment cutting with a Ridged 12-inch miter saw with a 100-tooth blade. That makes for a very smooth cut that requires very little sanding. Most of my bowls have had 12 segments per ring, and anywhere from 4 to 10 rings.
