Segment 10 random spot to Segment 11 Interlaken Trailhead
Into Segment 11. A few years ago, I climbed Mount Elbert and hit the trail via the Mount Elbert Cutoff Trail. The trailhead was nearby. It was very dark when I started then. There were a few switchbacks but then the trail leveled out before the intersection with the North Mount Elbert Trail. A couple of dayhikers continued up Elbert. (Mount Elbert is the second highest in the lower 48 at 14,440 feet, Mount Massive is a close third. It can be a difficult hike if not prepared. I would suggest starting very early. Not only to lessen the threat of afternoon thunderstorms but also to avoid too many hikers standing on the summit.)
There were a number of streams to cross and the trail was actually quite nice. Lots of Aspens but unfortunately they were still mostly green. A side trail leads to Twin Lakes Village, a small town with a general store for resupply or a mail drop. There is also a small Historic District with several historic buildings. Stop in the visitor center; you might be able to charge your phone. The town can also be accessed when the trail crosses under CO82. I didn't need to go there since I was finishing on the other side of Twin Lakes.
The hike around Twin Lakes isn't too exciting but it also isn't difficult. It is about 6 miles of flat, sandy and totally exposed to the sun, hiking. Great views of the mountains though. I stopped for a short break near Mount Elbert Power Plant at a very small Aspen grove. This is the last shade for about 3.5 miles until past the dam. I made good time and finally made it back to the car.

TN Pass to Wurtz Ditch Road
Tennessee Pass is the beginning of Segment 9 (or the end of Segment 8). In 2016 I finished my hike here. This year (2017) I was planning to do the Collegiate Loop which starts at Segment 11. Todays hike was a dayhike which allowed me to acclimate to the altitude (as of yet, I have not had any problems with altitude.)
A fairly easy hike to Wurtz Ditch Rd and back. The trail meandered through several small meadows and over a few bridges. Almost 6 miles roundtrip. I was not done hiking for the day.
Wurtz Ditch Road is a dirt road, probably passable by most vehicles. The Colorado Trail Trailhead is very small with parking for maybe 2 cars.
Today was to be the last day of this section hike. I still had over 15 miles of hiking to make it to Goldhill Trailhead, and then to Breckenridge where my car was parked at the Bivvi Hostel. The morning was chilly but the sun was shining as I began to hike.
The closer I got to Breckenridge I started to notice thousands of down trees. There were criss-crossed tangled trees everywhere. It was real a blight on the landscape. Initially, I didn't know the cause. I thought maybe a new ski area was planned and the crew they sent to clear the mountain went a little overboard. Many of the trees were just on the side of the trail, but eventually someone started making what I assumed were pyres for burning. It really was shocking to see so much devastation.
As I was hiking through, I encountered some bikers who knew the cause. Evidently there has been a Mountain Pine beetle infestation. It is an epidemic which has covered over a million acres in both Colorado and Wyoming. The beetles burrow into the bark and lay eggs. As the eggs hatch, they eat the bark, thereby killing the tree. Very destructive.
I made it to Goldhill Trailhead which is still several miles from Breckenridge (Frisco is also accessible from here). Fortunately, not far away is a bus stop where I caught a free bus ride (which also goes to Frisco). It didn't go all the way to the hostel, but it was close enough. I had thought to stay at the hostel but I had not made a reservation and they were booked. (The Bivvi appears to be a very nice and clean hostel, but not just for hikers. All Breck visitors are welcome, so if you plan to stay, call ahead for a reservation.)
Overall, I was hiking for 7 days. I hiked segments 1-6 on the Colorado Trail. For anyone planning a long distance hike, these segments are a great introduction to the CT. Some difficult spots but some easy hiking as well. Awesome scenery without spending too much time above treeline. It was a great hike; I was ready for more!

The segment of O’Connell Street in Dublin between College Green and Parnell Square is lined with grand commercial edifices, a physical manifestation of the street being the commercial heart of the city. Most buildings along the length of the street date to the Victorian period, with some Edwardian and Georgian structures mixed in. The diverse architecture of the street includes buildings in the Neoclassical, Classical Revival, Gothic Revival, and other assorted revivalist and eclectic styles represented. Though not as famous as some other major streets in other European cities like La Rambla in Barcelona or the Champs-Élysées in Paris, O’Connell Street still has a comparable breadth and concentration of major commercial establishments to these more famous streets, and is one of the most important and notable places in the city.
