Day 2

Segment 9 random pond to Segment 10 random spot

So now into Segment 10. I crossed another bridge at Busk Creek and then over Hagerman Pass Rd. Crossed another dirt road just before entering another Wilderness Area. This one was Mount Massive Wilderness Area, which includes Mount Massive. The second highest point in Colorado at 14,421'. The hiking was pretty good, mostly in the trees with the occasional view. Rather typical actually. Lots of rocks, steep side hill, some switchbacks, etc. Saw some aspens but not many. Large boulders were strewn about on the way to Rock Creek.

Encountered a number of hikers today. A dayhiker with a dog and some other Colorado Trail hikers. One of the CTers, also with 2 dogs, was doing like I was and filling in some gaps. A few hiking the Continental Divide Trail cruised past while I was making an early dinner at North Willow Creek.

I was planning to camp closer to the Mount Massive Trail, but since I had decided not to hike it at this time, I found a suitable spot about .5 mile past the intersection. I ran out of water just as I got to camp. Fortunately, while searching for a suitable branch to hang my food, I found a small spring. There was also the ruins of an old cabin. 13.2 miles for the day.

1. Egyptian Mummy Wrapping (segment 1), including reference to the Book of the Dead

Hieroglyphic and hieratic text

Egypt, between 300 and 30 BC.

The section shown here includes chapter 125 of the Book of the Dead. To the right, the god Osiris is shown seated in a columned hall, waiting for the owner of the mummy bandage to appear before him. The eight baboons surrounding two lakes of fire, a place of potential punishment, are part of the judgment of the dead, discussed in the text underneath.

Day 1 (Segment 25)

Elk Park to random site via Molas Pass

The trail crosses US550 at Molas Pass. At 10,886’ the views are spectacular. A parking area is a short distance away where there are interpretive signs and some toilets. Overnight parking or long term parking is available at Molas Trail Trailhead, a little further down the road toward Silverton. I parked there previously and had just a short hike to connect to the CT. From the Pass, Silverton is about 7 miles away. A fascinating little mining town with most services available. Alternatively, Molas Lake Campground is also nearby for an overnight stay with hot showers and minimal resupply options.

Continuing on into Segment 25, the scenery did not disappoint. The trail skirted the edge of Little Molas Lake where there is a Forest Service campground (first come, first served, that includes a toilet). Although the trail never really went above treeline, there was plenty of exposure with 360 degree views. The hiking included some more steep sidehill but it wasn’t too difficult. There was lots of vegetation, including flowers. Although colorful, no huge field of flowers.

After 13 miles of hiking it was getting late and it was time to start looking for a decent flat spot. I finally found one on the edge of a cliff. I set up camp and then enjoyed the surroundings. Today was a great weather day with a few raindrops and probably in the 60s. It looked like it would be a clear night.

We just walked part of the Waitukubuli National Trail, Segment 2, Bellevue Chopin to Tete Morne via Morpo.

The whole trail goes from Soufriere Estate to Bellevue Chopin.

Initial work on the design -- it's all in the patterns of "on" and "off" sectors on the disks. As the wheels mesh together, different sectors are revealed through the 7 segment windows.

The three segment disks are at the top, using different shades for the different segments to make verification a little easier. Along the bottom I'm testing '0'... '4'.
