Spartacus

5 years old - Rottweiler - Neutered Male

Date in Shelter: 4/26/11

Spartacus was transferred to Second Chance from a hoarding situation in St. Johns, AZ. He was one of 200+ dogs that were rescued from one property.

Because Spartacus was undersocialized for much of his life, he can be a little cautious of new people, especially men. He warms up very quickly though and it won't take him long to be your new best friend! You can tell Spartacus is excited to see you because his whole butt wiggles!

Spartacus would love a fairly calm household where he gets lots of love and attention. He's super affectionate once he's comfortable with you and loves to be petted!

As seen from the Court of Cassation (Areopagus, i.e. the "Stone, or Hill, of Ares").

Η Ακρόπολη. Θέα από τον (αρχαίο) Άρειο Πάγο.

"Bike and Run" festival (17-19/9/2010).

Technopolis, Kerameikos (Gazi), Athens, Greece.

There's a boy walking on the pavement to the house. He's walking slowly, as if he has to concentrate to place each step. His clothes are torn, as if he got into a fight, and the bruise on his face gives more evidence of that. His head hurts too, but then he has a hangover and it's a miracle he managed to drive home from the frat house. As he reaches the porch, he trips and falls on his face.

Seven years later, the same man is walking up to the house. He's walking normally, shoulders thrown back and head held up high. He's more muscular now, more athletic, and he's wearing glasses on a dress suit. He's coming home from an all-nighter at work, he was finalizing a merger with another company. As he reaches the porch, his two year old daughter runs out to him and he picks her up and swings her around. He doesn't party and get drunk now; he knows his responsibilities. He doesn't keep in touch with his old fraternity, he takes his wife and daughter out to dinner instead. He remembers the last time he came home at this time and smiles. She made sure he made it through; she fixed him.

Don't judge people based on what you see. Everyone is dealing with something.

Today is my second chance on taking a better picture than yesterday....... sorry about that one.

Earlier today, I was freaking out because I couldn't figure out what I was going to do for my picture today.

Then, on the bus ride home, I looked out the HUGE window, (our bus has abnormally large windows which are great for taking pictures, and I decided to take a mental note of that) and saw the moon.

So, when I got home, I asked to borrow My dad's DSLR, and the telephoto lens. It didn't turn out amazing, or as large as I'd hoped, so then I turned my attention to the light pole.

Both pictures I used are SOOC, and overlayed. (Thanks lina)

Hope this is good for today!

Can you see the moon?

I just saw Haley's Comet, she waved

Said, "Why are you always running in place?"

Even the man in the moon disappeared

Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father I've done the best I can

To make them realize this is my life, I hope they understand

I'm not angry, I'm just saying

Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Please don't cry one tear for me

I'm not afraid of what I have to say

This is my one and only voice

So listen close, it's only for today

..this was a very unique video based on Lamentations 3.22-23 ("b/c of Lord's great love we are not consumed...great is Your faithfulness...") ...about a man who dies of "self-combustion"...which the film says is a symptom of depression...apparently people die by burning...they simply self-ignite..and nothing else around them is burned..is this an urban myth or real? not sure myself...tried to google it and got only a few hits with some discussion of it...based in India the word "khwaish" apparently means "desire to live"...in this story the young man was being oppressed by his overly strict parents...and felt loved only by his sister... I would like to know more from Sitaram or Mehul about this..based on a true story ? or what ? anyways, congrats...**The 168 film fest is named such because it allows filmmakers 168 hours (7 days) to create a film based on a provided Bible verse.**

Day 141:

I needed this weekend more than I thought I did. I am fully rested. The only problem is now facing reality when that 3:30 alarm hits.

Good news though, I am almost through a few of my stresses and just have a few more to face. I know it will happen in time when it is supposed to though.

You probably don't have to read all this rambling... it's really really long...

I started grad school just as the digital age of interactivity was beginning. Seven years after sound could be captured digitally, but not played back. Six years after digital playback became available, and just as interactivity became possible. I existed in an interactive academic world just when the digital revolution put one-way communication theory into a half-nelson and turned it on its ear.

Immediately I got a computer login account, an email address, and a gopher browser and dialed, from home, into the internet where I could search the music library at Indiana University, look for microfilms at Cambridge, or browse titles and copyrights at the Library of Congress. All, from my 1meg RAM, 8mghz, Mac Plus through a 1200k phone modem.

Keep in mind that this was 4 years before Al Gore verbally fantasized about the information superhighway, and 6 years before the World Wide Web. My professors were issuing hand-written and typed exams with whiteout smudges, and we were submitting homework of laser-printed music scores.

We could converse with our more savvy profs about assignments via email at all hours, and we joined huge global listserv groups for the discussion of many apt academic topics. One of the things I remember most vividly, was typing into that computer with a dictionary on my desk. I was TERRIFIED of sending off misspellings, inappropriate word use, or other evidence of my humanity to these Doctors and Academic Titans. Suddenly, the comfort of home felt as formal as the classroom, or a submitted research paper. I felt as if my ability to think, write, and spell were being evaluated via my digital correspondence the same as my formal academic writing. No doubt, impressions were being formed.

So I re-read everything many times before pressing the hyperlinked “send” text, I looked up words in the dictionary even if I’d typed them hundreds of times before. I agonized over number vs. possession, whose and who’s, homonyms, farther, further, ie and ei, after c, and capitalization (or is that Capitolization?) Ha.

Ah, the handy-dandy hard-copy dictionary/thesaurus and, of course, MLA, or Kate Turabian for emergencies.

I have that issue still today, and like the old geezers who just couldn’t grasp the concept of interactive communication theory after a lifetime of reading published books, and gathering info from broadcasts, I now cringe 148 times a day, when I read consistent misspellings and improper uses of extremely common words. I definately can’t seperate teh edgicated from the nonedgicated. And THIS, in the age of spellcheck, grammarcheck, autocorrect, and automatic format. In fact, I had to figure out how to overpower the word processor lest Microsoft correct all of my cleverivity in that wonderful sentence back there. (cleverivity did not pass the test)

But of course, none of that is the point of my scribbling this morning. My thoughts were sent in this direction because I quickly typed a post reply on facebook this morning and as soon as I’d hit “post,” I saw that I’d used “there” instead of “their,” or some such display of stupidity. So I clicked the “edit your post” button and got a blank screen. Two hours later, when facebook came back online, the “edit your post” button was gone, and I was stuck for all eternity exposed to world for the fool that I am. This hurts folks.

Ouch.

So, I thought, indeed, correction and second chances seem quite easy in our world. Ctrl-alt-del. Undo. (Mac users just hit a button, Windows requires a key combo – different theologies for different folks, I guess) Redo, step backward.

These technological blessings haven’t always been available. A mulligan hasn’t always been as easy to secure. But through experiences like this morning, I’ve come to realize that though we seem always to get a second chance, we can’t always undo.

So, I think it’s imperative to accept that it is much less important to keep our failures secret than it is to know that they have no bearing on our being loved, respected, and cared for.

Of coarse, that definately meens that I’ve got to show a lot of grace two, lest their be les shone to me.

Day 94:

I have not taken good care of my eyes by any means whatsoever. I have stretched a six month prescription of contacts over three years. I haven't had a pair of glasses in ten or more years. I have just completely ignored my eye's health needs.... not so good for a photographer since a photographer's eyes are one of their most important tools.

Those days are over. My workplace has offered us optional vision care and I knew it was time to take care of these eyes. I have new glasses and a new prescription of contacts that I will not stretch out to any lengths. I will just use them as recommended.

My eyes are a treasure and I will treat them as such.

Day 116:

...and some things are set right.

Such a weight lifted off my shoulders, good news, just to receive some potential very bad news just a few hours later. I and this photograph is concentrating on the good news. Hopefully I will find out tomorrow that the potential very bad news does not come to be reality.

Day 119:

Two weeks ago I told you this:

"I have been putting off this writing, this responsibility off for too long and now it's only a month away. I think, I know it's time to get on it and hit it hard. I don't think it will be too difficult, but if I procrastinate any longer I am afraid that it will be troublesome. I refuse to let it get to that point."

I have since put it off even more. I am now at that point that I claimed I would refuse to let it get to. I am worried and I am stressed. I hope I can get this accomplished in time.

Day 7 of 7: Completely Satisfied

Hey, look at that! Seven full days of being satisfied. I really didn't think I could do it... I wonder how many more days I can go in this satisfactory streak...

23rd Mid-Atlantic Air Museum World War II weekend at Reading Airport, PA

Door/by: Jan Fabre.

Jan Fabre was inspired by the book "Utopia" written by the English statesman and humanist Thomas More in 1516, describing an imaginary island with an ideal political system. In the sculpture Fabre depicts himself riding on a huge tortoise, looking out to sea for the island Utopia. By choosing a tortoise as his steed he is saying that the desired destination should be reached at a leisurely pace rather than in a rush.

Fabre heeft zichzelf op een reuzenschildpad afgebeeld, vanaf de kust zoekend naar het eiland Utopia. De schildpad duidt erop dat het verlangde doel heel langzaam bereikt dient te worden.

Day 109:

I am über excited for stormy nights to start coming. There is just something about them that I love, I can't quite describe it, but I really love stormy nights. I also find them extremely relaxing... and they are also a good excuse to stay in doors kick back and have a movie marathon!

HELP FOR JOHN KITTY!

This is a newly rescued cat at RIKKI'S REFUGE named JOHN. He is badly injured and was relinquished by his owners to a rural pound. He has a badly fractured leg. The vet. facilities at that pound didn't really have the resources to care for John, and he has been turned over to Rikki's Refuge, and the regular veterinarian for Rikki's will be handling John's care. John is at the refuge tonight, being kept comfortable until he can go in tomorrow to begin his extensive treatment and recovery. He would have more than likely been euthanized today. Rikki's Refuge is going to try to get him a second chance at life. and if you would like to help give John Kitty this chance, please donate. If you are unable to donate, please share for him, that will help him a lot too! His care is estimated at $1200. THANK YOU!
