Trees and a sunny summer sky at Kopachuck State Park in Gig Harbor, Washington.

In the still corners of the evening,

when even the lamp hum quiets,

he finds himself alone

with a gentle ache he doesn’t resist.

It’s not sorrow, exactly.

It’s the shape of her absence -

warm, remembered,

like the last echo of laughter

just before sleep.

She’s not here tonight.

But she hasn’t left, either.

Her presence lingers

in the pause between thoughts,

in the urge to share a quiet something

with no one but her.

It’s the way his chest hums

when he hears a song she loves,

or how he smiles at the memory

of her smirking at his crocs

Little things.

They bloom in his solitude

like jasmine in moonlight—

soft, persistent, fragrant with memory.

Even in his solitude, she is there.. always.

Tonight could have been my second chance to get it right. Sometimes I do get it right on the second try. Last night I wanted to go someplace to shoot the Super Moon. Generally, my moon shots are pretty bad, but it gives me an excuse to run away in the dark… as opposed to my usual habit of running away during the daylight hours. But, I had made plans to meet a friend for dinner last night, and as is usually the case with most of my friends…. My suggestion of “Hey! Let’s go drive for an hour so I can try to take pictures of the moon!” was met with little enthusiasm…. Well, who am I kidding… it was met with no enthusiasm… more like, “No…. I don’t think that’s going to be happening.” (Have I mentioned recently that I really need a few new friends?~) So, I went tonight. Alone. And I got to where I was going, and it was the usual scenario. First of all, I turned on my camera and nothing… I had changed my battery before leaving home, so it couldn’t be the battery (or could it?~) So, I popped the battery out and put it back in and then it was Ok. Then my shutter remote malfunctioned and just kept shooting continually. I played around with that for awhile, but I couldn’t fix it. Not happy about that! Finally, I set my tripod up and was playing around with settings and just generally amusing myself when some guy came up to me and asked me if I was there for the rocket launch. What rocket launch says the person that has no clue what is going on in the world these days. So, he told me about the Antares rocket launch and was amazed that I knew nothing about it… afterall it was “all over Facebook” today, he said. I haven’t looked at FB all day. So, I told him I had just come too see the moon rise because it was a nice night. Then he began to speculate on which of the many people there were there for the rocket launch and which were there for the moon rise. Ok. Then he told me exactly where the moon rise would be and where I needed to stand. He explained to me that his phone app….sky watch or whatever it was, was extremely accurate. I was thankful for this information, because I had no idea where the moon would be rising. The rocket launch was about 2 minutes before the scheduled moonrise. So, I stood in a crowd and stared at the sky with everyone else, as people actually counted down to the expected rocket launch time. And then, there was a red dot in the sky, briefly, and then it was gone. I guess that was it. It was either that, or an airplane. No one seemed sure… and everyone just stood there, still staring into the sky…. Until someone said loudly…. “Wow! Look at the moon!!” Wait…. The moon? I was staring right where that kind stranger had assured me that the moon would be rising and I didn’t see a thing…. Until… I turned around, and there, so far to the left of me, that it was almost behind me…. Was the very large, bright red moon, already higher in the sky than I had hoped for. So much for the extremely accurate phone app. You know, when that guy told me that he sits in his house and watches the space station without even going outside… I should have had my doubts about him. Sigh. So, I took some pretty bad moon shots… and it was already too late… I couldn’t get the moon and the skyline in the same shot the way I have wanted to shoot it for several years now. So, I moved to another spot for Plan B, hoping to get the waving American flag in front of the moon, which is when a woman, assuming I lived locally, approached me about taking school pictures at some school … in Newark. By the time she was done, I had also lost the opportunity for Plan B (which I’m pretty sure would also not have worked out.) Maybe if I had gone last night, I could have gone back tonight and gotten it right. But, hey… at least I got to see that rocket launch!! LOL! Maybe tomorrow….

Sometimes it happens. As with fashion, books, movies or songs, every now and then you stumble upon something that stirs your usual apathetic indifference so that you cannot but love or hate what is confronting you.

When I first had a better look at the Natural History Museum exterior I wondered why such an important job as that building had been commissioned to a Walt Disney's graphic designer. Even with my limited studies in Art History I could tell there was in that facade a puzzling mix of styles, possibly from very different historical ages.

The point is that in my opinion there was a (slightly heavy) touch of kitsch in the design of the building. But the other point was that despite the discrepancies with what I could think of as a good natured artistic style... I was enjoying what I was staring at.

And I always smile a bit in disbelief when I enter the museum, well aware of I much enjoy that charming style (I dare to call it NeoGothic, without any pretension of accuracy) and not shocked at all at the idea that one of the seven dwarves could be peeping at me from under a dinosaur :)

Second Chance Shelter Volunteers.

Just another fascination with B&W :)

Sometimes we draw them and may times they are drawn for us... are they there for our protection??? Or are they there for us to challenge??? I'm sure 10 different people would result in 10 different answers...

While I'm pondering the answer to that one... these beautiful common zebras are lining up at the perfectly placed watering hole right in front of the dining area in the last resort we visited in Kenya last month... I actually contacted my friend to see about a return trip next year already... anyone interested??? :-)

I didn’t speak aloud. You wouldn’t have heard me from all the way across the pages. But I watched the ducks move like gentle punctuation marks, and in my mind, you were nearby. Just far enough to miss the hush, but close enough for me to write it down for you.

The swan kept gliding past the birdhouse, unbothered, elegant, as if trained in the choreography of quiet evenings. And I thought of you-twilight felt like a soft promise kept.

My hand rested on the arm of the chair, fingers tracing the old scratch in the wood. You’d tease me about things like that-you always notice the smallest things. You'd say it looks like a heart someone gave up on carving all the way through.

I imagine you in that cafe booth you like best, sipping something warm and too sweet, already tangled in tomorrow’s ideas. You're probably wearing that slightly wrinkled shirt that makes you feel romantic, even when you say you're not.

I send you soft goodnights. In the air between this pond and wherever you're tucked away.

I don’t know if you’ll dream about me tonight, but I’ll dream about you - your laugh as punctuation, your breath as narration. I’ll let the evening wind itself down and fold the silence like a note in your pocket.

Happenstance Love Shack

Farewell Christmas —

May your spirit be carried over

into the next year.

Some things in life just don't perish,

Things you'd forever want to cherish.

Like fond memories of days gone by,

Of days strewn with joy.

Memories, you'd always want to carry

Through the winding roads of life, making you tarry,

And reflect over the good times,

And the bad times.

Yet making you smile and say,

'It's a wonderful Life'.

i know, it's been awhile...

Back in May I was asked to photograph some bands playing at a Christian concert called the Revolution. I stood behind the throngs of attendees and used my 400 big daddy lens to capture the action on the stage from a safe distance... This was an example of modern photography at most events nowadays... only I'll bet my pictures look better... :)

It also protrayed how I have felt at times over the last 4 months... like I was looking at life through someone else's view screen. As you can see my view is quite blurry, but through his little camera phone the view of the world is quite clear... God has brought many of you into my life to help encourage me to move forward and to start using my focus ring again to see all that He has for me to still live for... thank you.

Photography is delightful in many ways. "Second chance editing" is a beautiful reminder that you can always capitalize on prior difficulties.

Two years ago I visited perhaps the most beautiful place on earth: Yosemite National Park. Despite the amazing scenery, the colors from that time of year were incredibly difficult to work with.

While combing through my archives, I found this angle of El Capitan that I could never quite edit satisfactorily.

Some photos just take longer than others to figure out, but I'm glad photography is an art that can wait and be revisited.

Second Chance is a nonprofit based in Baltimore that trains those with employment barriers to deconstruct buildings & homes to salvage quality materials for reuse.

This was one of the photographs that I chose not to upload about a year ago, as it wasn't interesting enough.

I saw it again yesterday and I was still not a 100% sure if it was good enough to upload it, but then I decided to give it a second chance.
