Quote from Epictetus :

Paraphrased memento mori: Sure, pick up a pretty seashell on the beach but don't wander too far from the ship and if the captain calls drop everything and run.

“Sea is outside, sea is inside,” Natasha thought to herself closing her eyelids.

This was a very special birthday! The inspiration for this cake was based on the invitation.

I got this seashell from somebody who was in Croatia. It's too long ago, but I still have it and did this beautiful composition.

#34: what is wrong with this Picture?

Photographed on Moonee Beach in Solitary Islands Marine Park near Emerald Beach in NSW, Australia.

There was a lot of ice at the beach.

Buddy found his favorite seashell during our visit to the beach today. It took him some time to pick one he liked.

Keeping myself amused on a rainy day .... played about arranging shells on the light pad, dabbled a bit with layers, textures and blend modes in PS ...

Seashell arrangement in a large glass bowl arranged, photographed, and edited by yours truly. ISO200, aperture f/8, exposure 2.0 seconds (2), focal length 18mm. Best viewed in large size.

A series of photos of seashells that will be posted over the next few weekends until completion. All shells featured were gathered in North America. Either in the Caribbean, or the East, West, and Gulf Coasts of the United States.

Seashells come in two varieties. Gastropods...these are univalve seashells that are not hinged or joined together. Bivalve Seashells...which are two (2) piece shells that are hinged/joined (e.g. clams, scallops, cockles, etc.)

Most seashells, except for the Bivalves, will be presented with both sides photographed to give a better view of its true shape, form, and beauty. I hope you enjoy the images created for this series, as well as find the series informative.

PS...the above arrangement proved to be a real challenge to photograph...more so than I expected. Three hours spent alone on set-up of the surroundings to eliminate any light reflection on the glass bowl, which proved to be a much more difficult task than it may first seem.

This is one of the many shells we've collected over the years from the Baja peninsula of Mexico. This probably came from the Bahia de Los Angeles area.

I placed this on a mirror and lit it with one SB700 in a softbox to the left of the shell and a reflector to the right to bounce a little light back on to that side of the shell. Flash was in manual mode triggered by the pop up flash of my D90 in commander mode.

Other shell pictures that I've taken over the years can be seen here. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157626043932290/

I built myself a light box and had fun taking photos of my sea shelll collection in it, one shell at a time. The exquisite seashell, Lambis scorpius
