To me these early evening shots of the seafront between Brighton and Hove look like they could be Venice Beach or Santa Monica. Is that just because I've taken similar photos in those places or do they look to you that they were taken somewhere more exotic.

From Wikipedia : "Hove is a seaside resort in the county of East Sussex. It is a constituent part of the city of Brighton and Hove, created in 2001 from the formerly separate towns of Hove and Brighton. Originally a "small but ancient fishing village" surrounded by farms, it grew rapidly in the 19th century in response to the development of its eastern neighbour Brighton, and by the Victorian era it was a fully developed town with borough status. Neighbouring parishes such as Aldrington and Hangleton were annexed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1997, as part of local government reform, the borough merged with Brighton to form the Borough of Brighton and Hove, and this unitary authority was granted city status in 2000."

The first of the Seafront Sundays for 2023 was today. This lady was enjoying the music on Crown Pier and joined in during their cover of The Rolling Stones 'Ruby Tuesday'.

No more day trip photos to share now, believe it or not! So I'm catching up with photos I intended to share before, but never got round to!

This is our own seafront, during a walk in June with JJ and Southsea Dave.

A place that looks much better in photographs than it actually is. Sadly it is an area that has lost its way. It is tatty and deteriorating. A shame because it could be vibrant and colourful seafront with a little work and imagination and of course money?

Almost the entire seafront captured in this one shot. It is easy to see why Largs is such a popular place to live and visit.

Going through my last summer's archives, I discovered this 5 sec long exposure. It was shot midday by stacking a ND8 and a ND4 filter (and possibly a circular polarizer).

Brighton Seafront 30th of October 2018. I was in Brighton overnight to watch David Byrne's American Utopia Tour and spent the bright Autumn afternoon walking the seafront and pier

This is looking back towards Clarence Pier and the hoverport (see the orange windsock), this section of the seafront has just been reopened. You can see a couple of monument here plus the Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf, where we'd just walked from.

The monuments are the Chesapeake Memorial and Shannon Memorial. You can't see it very well but also there is an anchor near the hoverport, a memorial to the Battle of Trafalgar.

Frontage 3:

On 21 October 2024, the Southsea Coastal Scheme started work along Frontage 3 (Southsea Common) which stretches from Blue Reef Aquarium to the Hovertravel terminal.

Key statistics for this area include:

Volume of rock: 75,000t

Main carriageway fill: 5000t recycled crushed concrete

Number of precast units: 536

Number of promenade slabs: 414

Beach recharge: 61,000m3 of shingle dredged

Tide pools: 20 ECONcrete pools and 118 rock munched pools. (From southseacoastalscheme.org.uk/frontage/southsea-common/)

Canvey Island. Essex.

I believe these arches have been refurbished recently into these shops, which are right next to where they are building the i360 Tower.

Blackpool at low tide

After a rainy (whole) day in Lake District on the previous day and more rain in Cheshire Oaks Outlet we were blessed with a sunset in Blackpool. This was another 100 miles drive up on the M6 again! I tell you man, that geezer upstairs loves me too much! :-)

While we walked back towards the town centre, we saw a wedding had been going on at the bandstand!

When I look at this photo, the horizon doesn't look right, but I checked it twice on Photoshop and the sea actually is level!

Last views of the seafront at Bournemouth. I thought I'd include this photo from a previous trip to Bournemouth when we were hunting down a university for JJ to go to!

It was taken in November 2011, on an exceptionally warm and sunny day. You can still see the IMAX cinema, which has since been demolished.

In the 1990s a leisure complex including an IMAX cinema was constructed on the sea front by Bournemouth Pier. The building itself proved deeply unpopular amongst locals for its lack of aesthetic quality and for blocking the sea view. It featured on and came second in Demolition, a 2005 Channel 4 programme asking the public to choose the building that they most wanted to demolish. (From Wikipedia)

Here is the seafront at Swanage - it's lovely to stroll along towards the cafes and sandy beach. If you look carefully, you'll see the dog that I photographed in the park!

Below is a short explanation about the tramlines in my photo (from Wikipedia)

The pier which you see today isn't the original Swanage Pier - a pier was built in 1859 to allow Purbeck stone, quarried in the surrounding hills, to be exported to London to feed the capital's appetite for building materials.

John Mowlem and other prominent local citizens decided to speed up the way that stone was moved around by building a pier to directly load the stone onto the ships - horses would pull carts of stone along the seafront to the pier. You can still see the tram tracks on parts of the seafront.

October 2022

After a little walk to the east of the pier, we decided to go west! Another deckchair shot - bit quieter over here!

Here's a view from South Parade Pier looking westwards. There is a lot of redevelopment going on so part of the seafront is currently closed off while they make improvements to the sea defences. You can see the big blue Pyramids Centre, which was built as a swimming pool but now is an entertainments and leisure complex with a new soft play area called Exploria. We thought it looked like it was about to be lifted by a crane! To the left of the Pyramids is Southsea Castle.
