Southbound Bessemer & Lake Erie unit ore train U70261 passes the signal at the south end of Saxonburg, PA on Aug. 11, 2025, led by CN SD70M-2 No. 8804.

With SD70M-2 431 in the lead, the Vermont Railway's RDHJ job makes its way south on the B&R Subdivision as it heads towards Hoosick Junction to interchange with the Berkshire & Eastern. As the tracks parallel Vermont Route 67 through a marsh, the train approaches North Bennington, Vermont where they will make a pickup from the Bennington Branch.

On a cold January day, NS and CN trains make an over-under meet at Conneaut Creek in Conneaut, Ohio. The mid train DPU of NS manifest 316 rolls over the bridge on the Lake Erie district, as CN's U702 departs from the harbor along the river below behind a pair of SD70M-2's.

A nightly NR-2 is led South across Stoddard Cove by a trio of matching, freshly repainted P&W units. SD70M-2 4301 leads the way with B40-8 4002 and B40-8W 4007 trailing second and third. After a day of shooting properly painted P&W units in the New Haven area, I was planning on spending the following day in Plainfield. When I got there, however, I couldn't find a single unit still in the classic P&W colors, so I decided to return to New Haven that same night to shoot more classic P&Ws the following day. I did, however, set up for a shot of the nightly NR-2 when I saw them putting together their train together in the yard so that my trip up to Plainfield wouldn't have been in vain. Nine years ago in August of 2008, my mom took me and my brother to this very location on a visit to my aunt's house who lived in Gales Ferry at the time. We shot the same train, NR-2, which ran in daylight at the time, heading South across the cove with a B23-7R in the lead and a Geep bringing up the rear. I was only eleven at the time, so it was cool to return to the same location almost a decade later.

CN 2123 (GE C40-8) & 8895 (EMD SD70M-2) lead X33791 07 westbound on the Dubuque Sub gliding down the hogback just outside of Winthrop, IA. Chasing westbounds in the afternoon/evening along the Dubuque Sub is always a real treat. Taken on 7/7/19.

With storms approaching from the west, I got out to shoot a general rarity; a coal empty bound for the KP. Making things better, it had a CN SD70M-2 on the point, as opposed to the typical UP junk! Yes. Yes, I will absolutely go out to photograph this!

 

After having shot it first at Topeka's Calhoun Bluffs, I photographed the CN 8878 leading the CMSEY9 01 on the west side of Silver Lake at 16:38. Typically, I get skunked on this shot because I get greedy at Menoken, but today, I planned to get this shot, and I'm happy that I did. The clouds even held off. Sometimes, the Railfan Gods play nicely.

RDNR is seen passing an abandoned fire truck awaiting its fate at Wallomsac Metal Recycling.

Norfolk Southern empty grain train 51R highballs north along the Piedmont Division at Gaffney, SC behind NS SD70M-2 #2692, UP SD70M #5106, NS C40-8W #8376, UP AC4400CW #6187 & NS ES40DC #75??.

Vermont Railway train RDHJ shoves east on the Bennington branch to pickup a cut of hoppers located near the end of track.

With four SD70M-2's running 2x2 on a train of iron ore loads, Canadian National's U702 rounds the bend at Meadville Junction, Pennsylvania on the wye that was once the junction with the branch to Meadville. Today's train is holding the main as it meets northbound local L523 that can be seen in the siding waiting to pull up to the signals at MD North.

FG&A TA-East knocks down WE Chaires with a pair of ex-FEC SD70M-2s heading east on the former Seaboard mainline across the Florida Panhandle towards Lee where it will swap trains with the LC-West.

After holding on the Butler Spur for some passenger trains, CN 321 is on the move again with CN 2261 & CN 8893 for power.

CN 305's leader has just dropped off the two trailing units on the freight track and is now heading west so that it can back onto its train (stopped on the north track). Meanwhile CN 527 is passing on the south track. The fourth track at left (track 29) is occupied as well, with numerours cars parked there.

After receiving intel of an M-2 leader on 255, I made sure to not let it go undocumented. I ended up shooting this train four times in Illinois before ending my chase here. With 255/256 rumored to be annulled this summer, I plan to shoot the crap out of them.

With quite a consist, CN M337 cruises up to speed just outside of Burlington, IL with the GT Heritage Unit leading the way. The Whoarfrost added to the scene.

M315 is now curving downhill out of Three Hills with yet another canola field in the foreground.

CN SD70M-2 #8004 leads CN 422 with 5 other units, 4 of which are fellow EMDs, along the CN Grimsby Subdivison past Garner Road headed west towards Toronto.

After lifting cars at Coteau, CN 321 is almost in Ontario as it passes through the small town of Rivière-Beaudette on a summer evening. Power is CN 8963 & CN 5732, an entirely decent lashup, especially by current CN standards.

After setting off cars on the Freight Track, CN 310 is heading towards Southwark Yard with CN 8923 leading.

CN A402-19 with CN 8823 East Lead at Carrier MP 111 on the CN Montmagny Subdivision to the CN Mont-Joli Yard.

CP train 931 approaches CPC 123 at Westport, NY with SD70M-2 CN 8956 and AC4400CW CP 8578.

CN SD70M-2 8010 along with SD70I 5612 are working up the grade from Komoka to mile 6 of CN's Strathroy subdivision, hauling the 164 cars of train #M384.

Port Robinson - Sarnia, Ontario train #331 grinds upgrade underneath Dundas Peak. #331 has entered the Dundas Sub about six miles down the hill at Dundas West. It used the "cowpath" to enter the Dundas after travelling over the Grimsby Sub from Port Robinson. It's still on the south track but will likely cross over to the north at some point further west.

A very late CN 421 heads though Clifton and onto the CN Stamford Sub with CN SD70M-2 #8817 in the lead during the late aftenoon.
