A high headlight SD70M-2 leads CN X377 by the hot box detector at MP 29.2 of CN's Kingston Sub.

CN no.369 digs in to the hill rolling through Beare at the very northeastern tip of Toronto city limits. You can spot some of the first turning trees of the fall season in the background, ringing in another enjoyable summer.

Canadian National intermodal train Nos. 101 and 102 meet at Ashcroft, British Columbia, on a hot July 15, 2014. No. 101 is led by EMD SD70M-2 No. 8918 and is in the siding with the crew on the ground inspecting No. 102, led by sister SD70M-2 No. 8849 passing by on the main.

A pair of CN SD70M-2s lead L506, which is now based in New Richmond effective last summer, over the St. Croix River into Minnesota on the 2,682-foot Arcola High Bridge built in 1911. CPKC work windows on the Withrow Sub have made for several midday L506 runs over the trestle in recent weeks, and the L517 call time out of Stevens Point was pushed back which made for some daylight runs east of New Richmond.

After meeting a Cairo-bound grain train at speed, CN L590 tears through St. Johns with a thundercab SD70M-2 in the lead, and a healthy cut of Centralia cars in tow.

On a cold winter morning, a loaded Bessemer ore train passes under the classic signal bridge at SX North behind a quartet of big EMD's, snaking through s-curves high on the hillside in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania.

Just north of Norcross, the former Bangor & Aroostook built a causeway across the bottom of Elbow Lake on their way to Millinocket in the early 1890s. About 130 years later, Maine Northern train 910 is seen heading north on that causeway, with a trio of the sharp Irving painted SD70s leading empty chip cars north. Maine's tallest mountain, Mount Katahdin, can be seen in the distance above the power, still sporting a coating of snow from the winter.

Snaking through s-curves in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, a loaded Bessemer ore train passes under the classic signal bridge at SX North behind a pair of CN SD70M-2's. These US&S searchlight signals are part of the CTC signal system that has remained largely unchanged since it's installation in the 1950's.

Vermont Rail System train RDHJ heads south through the golf course swamp just north of Manchester, VT with an odd duo (SD70M-2 VTR 431 and high hood GP38 CSO 2038).

The trouble with CN's Grand Trunk Western painted SD70M-2 is thanks to a lack of anything on the nose it tends to look like a normal CN unit when you whip out the telephoto lens. Case in point is this shot of the unit leading M316 tipping over the grade east of Uncas Alberta on the Wainwright Sub.

Rugged scenery of Jasper National Park dwarfs Canadian National intermodal train 119, passing Jasper Lake just west of Devona, Alberta, heading for a crew change at Jasper on July 16, 2013.

When I saw this train come into view it looked like a crude train. A closer look revealed that there were no buffer cars on either end and no placards. Not sure what empty tank cars are headed south for but that's what I saw this morning. A GEVO leader with a pair of M-2's behind and another as DPU.

Edit: It turns out these are loaded trains, but the oil has been processed in a manner that eliminates the need for placarding and hazardous material shipping requirements. See the link in my comment below.

Northern Quebec Short Line/CN's Daily local between Garneau and Fitzpatrick, L56621-28 is passing along the shore of Lake Masketi at MP 83. 8851 and 4768 are both at full throttle, pulling 29 cars of loaded woodchips for the Westrock paper mill in La Tuque, 40 Miles West.

After running east to Mattawamkeag to handle the interchange with CSX, EMR 909 is seen returning to Brownville, running alongside the new siding at Knights, known as Simpson. The pair of green SD70M-2s have about forty cars in tow, which they will shove off on the Millinocket Sub for tomorrows 910 job, before returning to Brownville Junction for the night.

Vermont Railway RDHJ crosses RT 67 and the Walloomsac River on the way to Hoosic Jct. At this time of day the sun is in the wrong position for the the shot on the open side of this long trestle. The south side is now really grown in making this tight shot about the only option with good light.

CN 397 hustles through Brantford behind 2 CN SD70M-2's and 2 BNSF.

If you are out to see the daily Waterloo to Kirk Yard trains, you will notice a strong presence of SD70M-2's now on these trains. The past couple weeks it seems the CN has move a bunch of these units to these trains for captive service. Pairs, trios, and a 5-pack of solid EMD's have been seen alot in and out of Waterloo. A big departure from the constant supply of foreign power normally coming in and out of Iowa on these trains. Here a 7400 foot 338 gains speed east of Winthrop as they dip thru the Buffalo Creek sag on their way east towards Dubuque.

After playing musical engines in Binghamton, I ended up putting the 4062 and 4066 back to back to run back up the northern division. Sure enough it brought out everyone and their cousin and continues to bring much attention. Even I couldn't pass up shooting two fresh painted M-2s. I dusted off the DSLR and headed north not caring about the doom and gloom of CNY weather.

CN 394 drops into Bayview Junction with CN 8898 and IC 2462 providing the power.

From the archives - A few days before Christmas, a major snow storm hit the eastern Pennsylvania area. One day after the storm passed through, a pair of SD70M-2 diesels crawl through Cove, PA on the eastern end of the Pittsburgh Line with manifest 10N.

Canadian National train No. 102 cruises through Swan Landing near Brule, Alberta, on the afternoon of July 15, 2013. The CN main line here skirts Brule Lake, with scenic Jasper National Park providing a nice backdrop. Powering the hot eastbound train is SD75I No. 5773 leading a GE ES44DC and EMD SD70M-2.

SD70M-2 142 in the CITX lease fleet leads a FURX SD40-2 out of CSX's Barr Yard back in 2006. SD70MAC 744 was lapping the manifest with a BRC-bound intermodal.

CN 8835 leads CN L52691-07 (Bryant Yard, Waterloo, IA - Cedar Rapids, IA turn) northbound (directionally eastbound) across the old Milwaukee Road line from Marion to Rutledge, now owned by CRANDIC. Here's a picture of this same location from ~7 decades ago: youtu.be/Q3rkZC5MrPI?t=4832

Less than a year ago, this train would've been powered by IANR locomotives, but alas, that is no more. Here we see CN exercising their newly acquired trackage rights across the CIC's property down to ADM and the 900 Yards.

With Westrock closing their Cedar Rapids location down (that was the last remaining industry on the Chicago-Omaha MILW route), I guess CN buying out the IANR maintained their position of running on former MILW trackage in the Cedar Rapids area, didn't it?

Taken on the CRANDIC zone 4(??) or something like that on 9/7/25.
