Vermont Railway GP38-2 201 (built new for the fledging VTR in Dec. 1972) and SD70M-2 432 have arrived in town from Rutland with train RDHJ and are shoving their whole train around the wye past the splendidly restored 1880 Second Empire style Rutland Railway passenger station. They will back a third of a mile down the Bennington Branch and drop all their cars, then come back up here to pull and spot Whitman's Feed before heading light engine seven miles down to Hoosick Junction to lift their cars from the Pan Am Southern interchange. Note the former Rutland freight house at left that survives as well and is still employed by the railroad.

Vermont Railway's GMRC 263 at the Ludlow Station with the VTR 431 leading. The last day of September shows some nice early color in the Green Mountain State.

The snow-caked face of Ontario Northland APCU 220 brings up the rear of a North Bay to Toronto "test train" as a pair of Canadian National SD70M-2s hustle train no. 451 through the woods at Falkenburg, Ontario. While 451 would make it to North Bay without a hitch, unfortunately, the test train would encounter a series of significant delays on both trips. Since the test train's fateful run nearly three months ago, radio silence has led some to wonder the legitimacy of the government's claims to re-instate this service. Time will tell.

Only a few miles from Roseburg, the southbound Roseburg Hauler passes the signal at Wilbur at milepost 581.2.

A pair of GP38-2s lead an SD70M-2 on 285 at CP Bentley. The two 5000s were called up for this service when no other suitable leaders could be found at Kansas City. The 2700 was providing power but had a defect that made it only usable as a B-unit. The two GP38-2s were removed from the train at St. Louis and replaced with a newer six-axle unit.

The SU-99 is seen crossing Limecrest Road on the approach into Sparta Jct. with a rare solo SD70 leader. To assist with the steep grades over Sparta Mountain, a pusher was on the hind end until Woodruffs Gap.

I've had a well lit northbound envisioned from the ILL 15 bridge outside of Belleville for a while and got to cross it off the list tonight. CN 8907 brought a loaded wheat train (G896) with the "Grains Connect Canada" cars by the old FS silos and into the setting sun. According to MM, this train will dump at America's Central Port in Granite City via TRRA and PHRR interchange.

I love unit trains. Who doesn't, right? And probably at the top of that list are unit coal trains.

Here's a loaded 590 coal train negotiating the big curve at MP 131 along Norfolk Southern's Pittsburg Line just outside the town of Newport PA with an EMD SD70M-2 leader.

CN A421 rolls down the Stamford led by CN SD70M-2 #8930 with C44-9WL #2502 and ES44DC #2333 trailing on it's way towards Port Robinson on the last stretch of the journey.

CN 8868 leads the charge with a large freight into the small town of Valmeyer, IL along the UP Chester Sub. Total surprise to see a Canadian leader, made for a good final train of the day for me.

NYSW SD70M-2 4060 leads the WS-2/SU-99 west across the Hackensack River bridge. This marked the first time an SD70M-2 has led the SU-99, despite coming onto the property several months ago.

Empty grain train CN 875 is emerging from the newly rebuilt Turcot interchange with new grain cars up front. This 198-car train has CN 8874 up front, CN 2930 mid-train and CN 2334 on the tail end.

EDBF (East Deerfield, MA - Bellows Falls, VT) with Vermont Railway SD70M-2 431 in its consist, heads north at CPF-385 in Greenfield.

After literal years of rumours swirling around that the CN SD70is/75is would be rebuilt by Progress Rail, the first batch were released in the second half of 2024. Not many have made their way to the Champlain Division, but there have been the occasional few, almost exclusively trailing on 120/121. There was another kicking around, 8300 as the eastbound leader on L508 running east from Moncton, for a few weeks, but running nocturnally 99% of the time. However, there's always an exception to the rule, as was the case on the second Saturday in March this year. CN L50811 07 has gotten re-crewed in Truro and is now on the final stretch, passing the intermediate at M1.7 of the Dartmouth Sub in Waverley with fresh SD75iACC, 8300 (ex-5725) & 8896 on March 8, 2025.

CN M399 heads west under the old Wabash 4th District bridge in Kingsbury, IN on the South Bend Subdivision with the Grand Trunk Western Heritage SD70M-2 leading.

Daylight On The Delaware (And Beyond). After repairs were completed on the bridge in from Sparrow Bush, New York to Millrift, Pennsylvania across the Delaware River, a short SU-100 was operated, followed by a lengthy SU-99 on Thursday, May 25, 2023. While New York Susquehanna, and Western Railway SU-99 is normally an overnight run, on this day the crew was on duty at 0630, making for a spectacular chase across Delaware Division as the train made great time and recrewed for points beyond. The power set of SD70M-2s (4066, 4064, and 4060) leading SD40-2 3024 (Silver and maroon heritage) led a healthy 72 car consist. The train is seen crossing the Chenango River, in Chenango Bridge, New York after being recrewed by CL-1 and is headed towards Syracuse, New York.

I was able to score some peak fall color and a set of reds. This made my first VTR trip successful.

A pair of Dash 8's, an Ex-LMSX C40-8W lettered for the IC and a C40-8M "Cowl", are accompanied by an SD70M-2 as they lead BNSF train G-SIOEAP5-08A past the CB&Q searchlight signal at East Halls on the BNSF St. Joseph Sub. The train got held up here on the main for some time due to some sticking brakes on a couple cars deep within the train. The Trainmaster is couple grade crossings down the line giving the train a roll by after assisting the crew.

These former CB&Q searchlight signals certainly aren't long for this world, as all the newer PTC-compliant signals have been installed at Waldron, Leavenworth, Sadler and Armour, including the last Q cantilever which wast at East Armour.

The G-SIOEAP5 was interchanged from the CN at Sioux City, IA, and they have sported some fairly eclectic consists over the past year. It was overcast and extremely cold today, but the chances of shooting a blue IC Dash 8 leading around these parts isn't something to pass up. 2/9/21.
