Four fresh SD70M-2s arrived in Saint John just two days ago to be added to the Irving fleet. One of four would end up leading NBSR 121-01 out of Saint John, that would later tie down once across the border in Bancroft. We picked the train up at Bancroft this morning with the clean 6411 leading the way, and ended up chasing all the way to Brownville Jct. Here, EMR 121 rolls across the Pleasant River within Cautionary Limits in preparation to yard the short train.
A SD70M-2 & SD70 lead a cut of cars out of the quarry in Limestone. This is a branch off of the Herscher branch which branches off the Chicago Sub mainline in Otto. It was cool to finally see CN here, which I’ve wanted to do for years and years.
Leading its first train fresh out of the paint shop, #4066 is seen passing the #0111 caboose located in downtown Pompton Lakes next to the Pompton Lakes Station.

At 2355 hrs the inky darkness of the night sky is momentarily illuminated as Canadian National 8841 slumbers beneath the stars at Hawk Junction, Ontario — a lonely outpost on the once mighty Algoma Central Railway.
CN SD70M-2 8827 brings up the rear of the morning ore train through Butler. Cleveland-Cliffs purchased AK Steel in 2020 and recently announced plans to modernize this plant in the near future.
Basking in all its glory, Providence and Worcester SD70M-2 #4301 poses in front of Worcester Union Station with the companies passenger equipment for a shareholders meeting. You could still smell the paint as the #4301 had just come back from the paint shop with the correct white striping and fresh brown and orange.
This is the best this locomotive had ever looked.

Thanks to an X396 derailment on the Main Line of Mid-America, CN was forced to detour several freights up the Peoria and Gilman Subs, underutilized secondary lines that come in quite handy for network redundancy. This U757 ethanol empty is charging through the quiet hamlet of Parnell, just outside of Farmer City, Illinois on the Gilman Subdivision. This line still sports several US&S mast-mounted P-2 signals in ABS territory and no PTC.
The New York Susquehanna & Western's CL-1 cruises southbound behind a pair of ex-NS locomotives and is about to roll under the Route 11 overpass in Homer, New York as it makes the run from Syracuse back to Cortland. The train of asphalt tankers is bound for the Suit-Kote facility in Cortland.

Providence and Worcester SD70M-2’s #4301 and #4302, along with a pair of NECR SD40 variants, lug a loaded unit ethanol train East on the P&W’s Willimantic Branch. Moderate to heavy rain, at times, mixed with the tons of fallen and wet leaves made for one hell of a trip down the branch for the quartet of six axle EMD’s. To the left of the frame, photographer Tom Nanos looks on after getting his own photos of the train.

Canadian National train 102 curves through Swan Landing near Brule, Alberta, on the beautiful afternoon of July 15, 2013. The CN main line here skirts Brule Lake, with scenic Jasper National Park providing a nice backdrop. Powering the hot eastbound train is SD75I No. 5773 leading a GE ES44DC and EMD SD70M-2.
CN 148 overtakes CN 402 at Hardy Road in Brantford.
402 has the highly attractive looking CN 2415 leading a whopping total of 7 cars. They had to sit at Hardy to allow 148 to overtake them and for CN L580 to clear the Hagersville Subdivision before they could go down.
Luckily this meet occurred on my lunch hour today!
Early morning, with the sun just high enough to throw light on the rails, is the best time to shoot at Bayview. All you need is an eastbound train. On this time the timing was just about perfect!
That Bridge, That Train. A common phrase heard while chasing the New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railway SU-99 today was "wow, what a great railroad to shoot, if only they ran in daylight more often." With an 0630 OD time for the crew, the chase was on across the Delaware Division as the train made great time from the recently repaired bridge in Millrift, Pennsylvania to Binghamton, New York and recrewed for points beyond. Starrucca Viaduct in Lanseboro, Pennsylvania was opened in 1848 by the Erie Railroad, and is the oldest active stone arch railroad bridge in use in Pennsylvania. Normally both the SU-99 and SU-100 pass through in darkness except for the long summer months, so this was a real treat. The first 3 matched SD70M-2s (4066, 4064, and 4060) were making their daylight debut here, leading SD40-2 3024 (Silver and maroon heritage) and healthy 72 car consist.
CN 107 crosses the CP Parry Sound trestle with an SD70M-2 and a C44-9WL for power. This impressive engineering feat was a must stop in my daytrip to Central Ontario.

After finding out VTR train 263 had the less famous SD70M-2 #432 and CLP GP40-2 #306 I headed up north just in time to run into them in Chester, VT. The all red was nice but the 306 was covered in oil. Luckily some calls were made and the 306 would be swapped out out for a much cleaner CLP GP38-2 #204 which would lead the westbound train #264. Here is 264 making its way along the Williams River in Gassetts, VT. Another PTC day on the GMRC. Photo taken March 13, 2018

A hot summer afternoon with temps in the upper 90s finds the southbound Maine Northern job 910 plodding along at Packards, a trio of SD70M-2s powering the seventy-three car train. Just out of frame on the right is where the Bangor & Aroostook's Medford Cutoff split off towards South Lagrange; sadly that has been long abandoned, leaving 910 to deal with the steeper grades over Schoodic instead.

After spending the winter on home rails, Florida East Coast's SD70M-2 locomotives were leased to Norfolk Southern while the monochomatic Class 1 is power short. Like my grandparents, they came north for Summer, in this case ending up in the intermodal pool between New Jersey and Georgia. Here FEC 106 is at track speed running through the village of Walnut Bottom after sunset, a faint trail of exhaust bending out the stack as the train hustles west.

Low autumn light and mostly yellow foliage teamed up to produce a nice yellow glow as GMRC 261, lead by VTR 432, works hard through the tree tunnel towards the crest at Summit Rd. near Mt. Holly, VT.
Providence and Worcester train WONR cruises through North Grosvenordale with a decent sized train and quite the assortment of power. The train is lead by P&W SD70M-2 #4301, fresh from the paint booth. However, this will be the one and only time this locomotive will lead a train with this version of the P&W's paint scheme.
Just a few days prior, the unit was released from the paint shop in Plainfield and sent to Worcester for mechanical work to be put back in service. While in Worcester, it was determined that the striping was applied at the wrong height and the orientation of the stripe on the nose was wrong. Thus, the unit was turned around and sent right back to Plainfield to have its paint fixed. Some "special" strings were pulled to get the #4301 to lead.
Following closely behind the big EMD are five different flavors of Providence and Worcester GE's: a B23-7R Super Seven, B40-8W, B39-8E, B23-7, and a B40-8.
