This is a photograph from the Ringtown GAA Club Half Marathon and 10KM Road Races, fun runs, and walks which were held in Whitehall, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Easter Monday (April 21st 2014) at 11:15 and 11:30 respectively. Ringtown GAA club is situated in Whitehall which is on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard. The GAA club is shown here on Google Streetview [goo.gl/maps/UI9tD]. The half marathon started outside the GAA club. The 10KM race started about 1KM away from the start/finish area. Both races shared the same route. The race event was also a fundraiser for the charity TEAM (Temporary Emergency Accomodation Mullingar) which provides emergency accomodation for women and children of the midlands who are subject of domestic and sexual violence. They are located at Teach Fáilte, Green Road, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

The half marathon started at the GAA club. The main loop of 6 miles started here and proceeded around some beautiful rural back roads with major turns at [goo.gl/maps/8Iw9S], [goo.gl/maps/in6yE], and goo.gl/maps/JJzwM before joining up with the R394 and Castlepollard and returning back to Ringtown/Whitehall.
This was the GAA club's first attempt at staging a running event and the overwhelming reaction of participants was that it went perfectly. There was a team of Motorcycle outriders and Gardai who expertly controlled traffic flow (particularly along the very busy R394) and made for very safe running conditions for all participants. There was a wonderful selection of refreshments provided afterwards and maybe people were able to sit out in the sun and enjoy a well earned rest after the race. Shower facilities were provided in the GAA club.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

This is an partially complete example from one of the Challenge Scrolls that was made to give out to knights whom I sought to fight in my quest. The calligraphy was done by Isabella Nicola de Leon. I laid out the illumination. Mistress Rhianwen and I spent many enjoyable hours colouring and detailing the scrolls - a job which has yet to be completely finished (though I've given out quite a number of the scrolls over the year). I must note that some extra help illuminating was given by both Lady Isabella and Lady Niamh O'Heyne.

This is a photograph from the 3rd running of the Finea 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Finea, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday 23rd March 2014 at 12:00. The race is organised in conjunction with the Castletown Finea Coole and Whitehall GAA club which is an amalgamation club of the GAA clubs of the surrounding parishes. Whilst the numbers were lower than the races from 2013 there was still a great local country atmosphere with runners, joggers, and walkers enjoying the cold but dry and sunny weather for the race. There was a great spread of refreshments provided in Fitzsimons Bar after the race.

This race is unique in the fact that it provided participants with the opportunity to compete in a race in two counties (Westmeath and Cavan) and two provinces (Ulster and Leinster) in Ireland during the same race. The race started on the Cavan side of the famous bridge of Finea and finished on the banks of the river. Finea is a beautiful Irish village which is well known for its scenery and it's position in the beautiful landscape of North Westmeath amongst the lakes and hills. The race crosses the River Inny which provides a natural drainage river between Lough Kinale to the south and the much larger Lough Sheelin [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lough_Sheelin] to the north. The race was well stewarded at all road junctions. Water was provided at the 3KM mark.
Course: The race starts and finishes at either side of the Bridge of Finea. The Bridge End Bar was the start where the race went out 400m on the Granard road and runners turned around at cone and headed back into Co. Westmeath over the bridge and the 1km mark. Following the Castlepollard Road the race took at left at the 2km and followed a loop back past the National School and back into Finea village again for a finish down on the banks of the River Inny. The course was a tough undulating course but fair. Any short hills were balanced out by adequate down-hill the other side. The stewards provided excellent traffic management on what is a busy section of road between the 1st KM and the final KM and the finish.

Refreshments: There was a very impressive selection of refreshments including sandwiches and home-made breads in Fitzsimon's Bridge End Bar afterwards.

This is a photograph from the Athlone 10KM and 5KM road races were held in Clonown Village, Co. Roscommon, Ireland on Sunday 26th of April 2015 at 14:00 and 14:30. Clonown is a small townland on the west bank of the River Shannon and is situated about 3 miles south of the town of Athlone. Whilst the townland is almost completely rural it is accessed easily from major routes and towns by the M6 motorway. The weather was perfect for today's race and participants enjoyed very warm spring sunshine. There was a slight breeze on certain parts of the course but overall it was a beautiful day for running. Over 200 people took part in both events.

This race was the fourth annual running of the vent. Every aspect of the organisation was professional: from stewarting, registration, start of races exactly on time, car-parking, and post race refreshments. The 10KM route followed an anti-clockwise loop. The race started on the L2035 Togher Road (about 100m from Clonown Centre - see here on Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/xWj3i) and heads towards the old Ballinasloe Rd (emerging here - see on Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/P6rE8) and back via Creggan (turning off the main road at this point - see Google StreetView goo.gl/maps/wCHT0) with the finish at the Clonown Community Centre. The course turns at this point [goo.gl/maps/7sa6u] to return to the finish. The stretch from the exit off the Old Ballinasloe Road to the Creggan turn off brings the race through wide open bogland areas used in the peat extraction industry.
The 5KM race route follows a different route around the townland. The race starts at the church in Clonown and head clockwise around the Ballinaculla townland which offers lovely views of the River Shannon. The route then goes to the Drumlosh road and runs for 1.5 km before the roundabout which is the 3km mark. The race then turns around and returns back to the village and finish at Clonown Community Centre. Both races share some of the race route for the Flatline Athlone Half held annually in September (www.athlonehalfmarathon.com/) which makes the race routes very fast and flat.

Nicki had perched herself on this bench while I was taking the previous post shots, and it had these beautiful iron scroll arms.
I should probably have removed the leaf as it steals focus away from the scroll, breaking what would otherwise be a pleasing elliptical spiral movement of the eye around the picture.
