On its way to new owner Genesee Valley Transportation Company is the famous ALCO PA-1 restored by preservationist Doyle McCormack over the past 2 decades in Portland, Oregon. The locomotive began moving east in late April from the PNW on BNSF Railway, arriving at Kansas City yesterday morning. After a brief visit to Argentine, today it is moving on home rails as the 3rd unit on BNSF Train H KCKBRC1 04A. Here it is on the BNSF Marceline Sub. crossing arguably one of the most iconic pieces of ATSF engineering, the Sibley Bridge across the Missouri River, and one of the last stretches of single track railroad on the BNSF Transcon.

This engine was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway by the American Locomotive Company in 12-1948 as ATSF 62-L, builder number 76541 wearing the famous red and silver Warbonnet paint scheme leading famous trains such as the "El Capitan" between Chicago and California. On 4-5-67, the Santa Fe retired the unit and sold it to Morrison–Knudsen in Boise, ID.

4 Ex-ATSF units including this one were rebuilt by MK with the "PA-4" classification, for the Delaware and Hudson on 8-11-75, with this one becoming D&H 18. Under D&H ownership, they were used by Amtrak for the "Adirondack", and later by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority hauling commuter trains around Boston. The last PA's to operate in the United States, they were sold in 1978 to the NdeM, where this one ran as DH-18 until 1981. All 4 of those PA's remain, 2 at the National Museum of Mexican Railways, and 2 in the US.

In 2000, McCormack of American Freedom Train and SP 4449 fame worked with the Smithsonian Institution to bring two of these engines back to the United States. What was left of the 16 and 18 came home on flat cars to Oregon. Doyle bought a set of trucks in Canada to replace the ones that were missing when it arrived from Mexico, and the hulk of a BC Rail M420B for its 251 prime mover, electrical cabinet, and traction motors. 16 later wound up at the Museum of the American Railroad in Texas where it is steadily being restored to its Santa Fe appearance.

McCormack's father worked for the NYC&STL, better known as the Nickel Plate Road, and his first cab ride when he was 12 was aboard the real NKP 190. Doyle later worked for the N&W in Ohio and an operator, eventually becoming a fireman before moving to the Pacific Northwest in the 1970's. He hired out on the SP, worked freight an passenger service for Amtrak, and has retired from the UP, all the while being heavily involved with the 4449 organization.

When he restored the PA it was only natural for him to restore it to an NKP appearance, which took the better part of 2 decades to complete. The engine traveled to Spencer, NC in 2014 for the "Streamliners at Spencer" event featuring a plethora of locomotives from that era.

Now in his 80's, it was announced in March 2023 that he had sold the engine to GVT after years of talks. The engine will be put into excursion service by GVT and will pull excursions in Northeastern Pennsylvanian, including former D&H track the engine ran in revenue service. Assigned "DL 190" for movement to GVT's Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad in Pennsylvania, it retains its Nickel Plate Road paint scheme. The real 190 was built in March 1948 and carried builder number 75457.

For what was regarded as one of the most beautiful locomotive designs ever built, not many of these were preserved, and half of those units suffered what had been a grim fate for decades. It's nice to have a few left to enjoy.

A couple of days ago a certain Flickerite just happen to mention, quote, “After all, I haven’t seen any photos of Hoof” well I will not say any names just watch my eyes (Charlotte Headman).

So as always to confirm my stories are authentic, I secretly photographed the boys, well they call it at play but basically they are scheming, as you can see in the foreground we have Horace carrying out surveillance work, he could be the next James Bond when Daniel Craig retires, then on the left is Hoof the master, then we have what Hoof calls Project X.

Project X is a young Horse which is under the expert tutelage of Hoof and Horace and one day will take the lead role when Hoof hangs up his saddle and relinquishes the keys to his Typhoon jet.

So I will not say much more as I would not like to compromise the boys secret location, so until the next adventure, toodle pip.

Anstruther is a charming fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife, popular with day-trippers and holidaymakers.

Located south of St Andrews, Anstruther is the largest in a string of pretty, old-fashioned fishing villages along the stretch of Fife coast known as the East Neuk. Perhaps the top attraction is simply tucking into a quality fish supper from the Anstruther Fish Bar, which in recent years has won a number of awards including UK Fish and Chip Shop of the year. Enjoy the locally caught fish by the harbour as fishing boats land their catch.

Its been almost 10 years since GO unveiled the two tone green scheme, to this day its common to see a mix of both the new and old paint cars on trains. So its a nice treat to see the full set and imagine "what if they did this paint scheme overhaul properly.."

Amtrak's northbound Silver Star cruises through the outskirts of Tampa as it faces an approach signal to the Neve Wye. The power on the train consists of a GE P42DC and a brand new Siemens ALC-42 Charger wearing the new Phase VII paint scheme. As time moves on, Amtrak gets closer to unveiling a fleet wide version of Phase VII putting the current Phase V and VI on borrowed time.

When I was in London back in March I took a bit of a detour to see the recently opened Heatherwick Studios 'Coal Drops Yard' retail development. Unfortunately the upper floor, seen here, isn't open to the public (yet?) and it proved difficult to photograph thanks to the ongoing development that surrounds it.

Even for this tightly cropped shot I've removed a couple of cranes in Photoshop........

From Wikipedia : "The £100m project called for the listed Victorian sheds to be converted into a new high-end, 9,290 sq metre, shopping complex and privately owned public space. Thomas Heatherwick took the two converging arcaded sheds and connected them with the 'kissing roof. The two brick and wrought iron coal drops were designed at different times so were structurally different, but shared a common roof line. Heatherwick's scheme takes the analogy of how a strip of paper can be twisted, and does the same to the slate roof finish. He uses the brick sheds as a base, and constructs the plastic form of the roof from steel tubing. The result is an additional glazed space, in the roof, two storeys high that adds 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) of space. The 35m wide roof adds no extra weight to the wall structures; it is supported on a 54 steel columns that are embedded within the building. The slate used in the roof comes from the same seam in the same Welsh slate quarry as was used in the original roof.

There are 9290 square metres of shopping space, in units ranging from 15 to 1,800 square metres."

While I am not a modeler, I do have an appreciation for older cars featuring “fallen flag” schemes and logos. With each passing year these cars get ever more rare as they are repainted or simply age out and are retired. While most are battered, faded, and covered in graffiti they are still a treat to see harkening back to an earlier era when the railroad scene was far less homogenous and much more diverse and interesting.

CNW 520062 is a 55 ft 10 in long Plate F boxcar built by the venerable but now closed Trenton Works in Nova Scotia in 1995. Part of a 100 unit order primarily for paper service they were among the very last freight cars delivered new to the Chicago and Northwestern Railway in 1995 only months before the erstwhile granger was absorbed by the expanding Union Pacific. But a quarter century later a few live on, still proudly dressed in the corporate colors and adorned with the famous ball and bar logo.

Seeing the United 747 come in today, I wish they'd have spent a few bucks and sent the old Queens out in style in the scheme shown above or the old Stars and Bars or Saul Bass. Anyway at least they're doing something.
