My foray into the world of cabins! I wanted to try out a smaller model for this series and lean into the charming outdoors vibe that has been so popular in LEGO sets in recent years.

The Rustic Tavern is a family-owned bar that gets raves for cheap drinks from customers. The Rustic Tavern was chosen in the July 2010 issue of Madison Magazine as the Favorite Neighborhood Bar in Madison! This blocked-corner building was constructed in 1933 with residential upstairs and commercial down below. The outside of it bears two backlit plastic signs.

Sadly (for us) the conditions further North were apparently not snowy enough to drive large numbers of Thrushes and Buntings onto the Korean peninsula, as is normal. Nevertheless, we still found Rustic Buntings regularly - for UK birders a super sight !

A scene from the Bayfield Flea Market

I think everyone has spots like this, a place you've seen and always wanted to photograph but just haven't done it. I've driven past this sign probably 100 times. I've seen it in good light, bad light, at night, during the day, rain, sun, clouds, just about every condition imaginable. The difference between all those times and this one, was I finally decided to stop.

I really like old signs, I tend to like them even more when they're neon, but there's something about this one I especially like. Maybe because it's called "rustic", but more likely because of the "just right" amount of tilt that helps show the age of the sign.

As I started processing this I couldn't help but think about the return of Breaking Bad. This feels like it could be a location from the show, a desolate motel in the middle of the desert. As I processed it, that's the look I tried to achieve. I did almost all of the processing for this in Lightroom. Starting with the HDRsoft 32-bit HDR plug-in, then just sliders in Lightroom to adjust color, contrast, detail, etc

This old cow byre looked as if it was long abandoned but the fresh pallet in the gap would give the lie to that!

The walk from the parking lot to the hotel entrance took us through a wildflower meadow with rustic charm. My husband and I spent three nights in Cripple Creek, an old Colorado gold mining town. We stayed at Carr Manor, a hotel that was converted from a high school built in 1897 when the town was at its peak of population and wealth. We stayed in the Governor Carr suite which was luxurious and charming. The hosts were kind and accommodating. While Denver baked in near record high summer temperatures we enjoyed the open windows and the constant cool fresh breezes from the high altitude mountain air.

I am doing some work for Alien Skin right now and am experimenting with some of their other software, including Snap Art 3. I'm enjoying putting some of my recent shots through the "painting" process and producing my version of art. I don't have the skill with the brush, but I do have the skill with the light and the lens, and this enables my artistic side to "play" beyond my natural abilities. This old barn is just a few minutes walk from my house, and always catched my eye - particularly when the light is right. It has a great, rustic texture to it, and the great narrow depth of field that my 135mm f/2L lens was perfect to give me a nice contrast of dreamy foregound and nice detail on the textures of the barn.
