Okay, these are probably a series for a very small audience. This set of four was shot on a barrier island off the Virginia coast. the ship was rusted out and pulled up on a mud flat. The images look better enlarged.

A rusted and dented old Phillips 66 sign is "retired" in my parents' backyard.

The rusted remains of 34070 at Woodhams in 1982. The tender in front was a rare ex-LBSC example, which was later sold for use with a replica royal train loco, and then scrapped - although the wheels, axleboxes, and springs were saved. Several of the original tenders at Barry were sold off to various steel works, where the chassis were used for transporting heavy ingots.
'Manston' had a much happier future, with restoration completed 26 years later - including a brand new tender, and is now running on the Swanage Railway.
What is it about rust on painted metal that is so provocative and intriguing to me? What emotional nerve does it touch?
