The rust foreshadows the inevitable future of the rails in St. Thomas. Once the incredibly busy, productive hub of rail commerce in Southern Ontario, there is little here to connect us any longer, and, I feel, the situation will grow bleaker, faster.

Tenuous Link: went belly-up.
quietly rusting away, steel is but a temporary state, it comes from the earth and to the earth it will return
Rust
Unexplained,
the old shed stands
in the middle of nowhere,
surrounded by bog and marsh,
with swooping, twittering swallows,
and a snipe drumming in the distance.
The collapsing walls
present an array of earth tones,
a masterpiece of rust and corrosion.
Textured by decay,
the corrugations stripe their canvas
with colour and form,
composition perfected
by the exact positioning of nut and bolt,
and the irregular piercings
of ultimate decrepitude.
Within,
the wooden joists
are a man-trap for the unwary,
damply dissolving into green rot,
lit fleetingly by glimmerings of sky.
Take any piece, cut the metal free
from its surroundings,
a few inches square perhaps,
or a foot or two,
or three metres by four,
find fractal-fashioned patterns:
abstract art fit for a trendy gallery:
a far cry from snagged sheep’s wool,
the calling curlew
and the blowing rush.

Corrugated tin shed beside the A859 main road at Ardhasaig, Isle of Harris. Not sure what this was used for originally - it still has the remnants of a mains power connection attached to the top of the near gable end.

An old, abandoned motorcycle rusting in the humid Hawaiian climate. It was pouring rain, but I had to get this shot. I rushed out and set my aperture, focused and composed the shot, hoping it would turn out. Thankfully, it did. I knew the bright sky would throw off the light meter, so I made a quick estimate and set the appropriate aperture. Gotta love the sunny 16 rule.
