Runners in the 10k startup of the 2012 Run to Feed the Hungry.

The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run was held on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Runners start at Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe and climb up over the Sierras and then make their way over to the finish in Auburn. They have 30 hours to complete the run. The temperatures rose over 100 degrees F and only 238 of 399 starters finished the race. This guy (the one in red) ended up coming in somewhere in the top 5 finishers. The guy in blue was his pacer for this section.

We worked the mile 85 aid station near Cool, CA, in the western foothills of the Sierras. The first runner came through around 7PM and the last came through at 7AM the next morning. In between we assisted about 250 racers. My job as "greeter" was to direct runners to the med tent where they were weighed and evaluated, to take and fill water bottles, and to just be supportive and encouraging in general.

Although I enjoy this kind of thing, 100 rugged trail miles seems beyond my distance limit, and 100 degrees is certainly WAY above my temperature tolerance. So maybe a pre-emptive "no" to the would-I-ever-do-this question :o)
