The is a photograph from the third running of the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon ("The Flatline") which was held at Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Saturday 13th September 2014 at 11:00. There was beautiful weather for the event which started and finished at St. Aloysius College near the Canal Banks area of the town just slightly west of the River Shannon. This event was professionally organised and the very flat course meant that many runners both seasoned and new to the scene achieved season or personal bests. Almost 1,000 participants successfully completed the event in the beautiful September sunshine. Everyone involved must be congratulated for the flawless running of the event. This event is sure to go from strength to strength over the coming years. The event has grown from just over 600 in 2012, to over 900 in 2013 with around the same number finishing in 2014. Entry to the race closed weeks in advance.
This is a photograph which is part of a larger set of photographs taken at the start and finish of "The Flatline" 2014. The URL of the main set is www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157647516503901. This photoset contains photographs of the start (at the 600 meter mark) and then of the finish (at the 400 meter mark to go) up to a finish time of about 1:45.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: Such is the popularity of the race this year that registration closed for the race in mid-August 2013. There were well over 850 participants who took to the start line.
Weather: The weather on the day was almost too warm for running which is a very rare complaint in Ireland. The runners were bathed in hot September sunshine for the duration of the race and into the early afternoon. In the sections of the race out towards Clonown and around the Bord na Mona areas there was a cooling.
Course: "The Flatline" ceratinly lived up to its name. It is as flat a course as one is likely to find. A garmin connect gps trace of the route is provided here [connect.garmin.com/activity/199678412] Geographically the course spends much of the race in County Roscommon with only the first and last kilometers actually in County Westmeath. This gives geographically inclined runners the novel opportunity to race in two Irish provinces in one race. The course had distance markers at every kilometre and mile along the way. There were official pacers provided by the race organisers.
Location Map: Start/finish area and registration etc on Google StreetView [goo.gl/maps/8qCes] - Ample parking was supplied with some over-flow car-parking options also available.
Refreshments: An Alkohol Frei bottle of Erdinger was provided to every finisher as they crossed the line. Light refreshments were served.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!

This is the Maize Runner, a cocktail created by Shaun Dunn for the NoMad Hotel in Los Angeles, and published in The NoMad Cocktail Book in 2015. Dunn was inspired to create a cocktail based off a dessert from Eleven Madison Park (the hotel restaurant that would lead to the founding of NoMad). That dessert was a sweet corn pudding with blueberries. To realize this dessert as a cocktail, Dunn utilized the sherry cobbler format. This drink requires two specialty syrups (see note), a "corn syrup" (made from freeze dried corn) and a coconut syrup. The corn syrup obviously brings a distinct savory corn flavor but also add a malty flavor. Dunn also adds some genever which bolsters that malty note as well as bringing more botanicals and proof to the drink. He muddles fresh blueberries and adds lime juice for added brightness and acidity. Lastly, the star of the show is amontillado sherry which works with the powerful corn syrup rather than against it. It's a sherry cobbler through and through, but with complexity and intrigue guided by the dessert that inspired it.
5-6 blueberries
1.5 oz amontillado sherry (Lustau is great!)
1 oz corn syrup (see note)
0.25 oz coconut syrup (see note)
0.75 oz lime juice (NoMad specifies 0.5 oz)
0.75 oz genever (NoMad and I both use Bols, they specify 0.5 oz though)
In a shaker tin, muddle the blueberries. Add the remaining ingredients and a small scoop of ice. Whip shake (this just means shaking with less ice for the purposes of more aeration) until cold. Double-strain into a cobbler glass filled with crushed or pebble ice. Add more ice if needed. Zest a lime and orange over the top for garnish.
Note: I have a love/hate relationship with specialty syrups to be honest. They are great way to bring in flavors you couldn't otherwise achieve, typically for very little cost. The downside is that you might not have any other use for them and they will eventually spoil. Both of these syrups were difficult to make, possibly due to an error in the book or on my part. The corn syrup recipe resulted in doughy paste rather than anything resembling syrup. The coconut syrup had a similar issue. All my coconut chips absorbed the coconut milk, and I was left with next to nothing for yield.
Specialty syrups will test your culinary chops. There are two guiding principles I try follow. First, taste as you go. The flavor of whatever you're going for in your syrup should be intense. A strong syrup is preferable because you can easily dilute it with simple syrup, typically when you mix the final drink. Second, always aim for a standard sugar to liquid ratio (for me, that's usually 1-to-1). By keeping this standard, you can re-purpose this syrup in other experiments or adjust the intensity of its flavor in your cocktail by partially substituting the specialty syrup with standard simple syrup (or some other weird syrup). Wildly varying sugar-to-water ratios (or brix) will make recipe development a major headache that can be easily avoided measure by weight. If you don't have a kitchen scale, invest in one. No other tool can do its job, and they are inexpensive.
To make the corn syrup: combine about 100 grams of freeze dried corn to a blender and blitz into a powder. Add this to a bowl on a scale and tare the scale. Add water and whisk. At first it will become a paste so continue to add more water until it become soupy. Allow it to rest for 15 minutes. Take note of the amount of water added. Now add the same amount of sugar as you did water (so that it will be a 1:1 ratio) and stir thoroughly until all the sugar is dissolved. Pour all this into a nut milk bag and strain off the syrup. Store in an airtight bottle and refrigerate.
To make the coconut syrup: warm a can of coconut milk in a saucepan until nearly simmering, but do not boil. Take it off the heat. This next step is optional: pour the coconut milk over a handful of toasted coconut chips and allow to steep for 30 minutes. Strain off the liquid through a sieve or a nut milk bag, pressing to maximize yield. Measure the yield on a scale. Add the same amount sugar as you just measured (so that it will be a 1:1 ratio) and stir thoroughly until all the sugar is dissolved. Store in an airtight bottle and refrigerate.

Thanks to Julie (julielou41) I made a Modern Hexies Runner. I had always thought that the hexies would be much to fiddly for me. But then Julie sent me a couple of ready made hexies in a swap and they were sooo pretty! At first I didn't know what to do with them and played with them on my work table until I realized I have to make some more. So I started off and was quite amazed at how much fun they were. Actually I had to force myself to stop because there were other projects that needed to be finished too. I am totally in love with my hexies runner and thank you Julie for starting me off. Without you I would probably never have made hexies! And these won't be my last that's for sure!
If you`re happy to run just run this way
By keeping fit you`ll live another day
Even if your arches crumble and drop away
Or your tendons pop as they go astray
Cause running is an well known extreme sport
Never to be mixed with the drinking of Port
So every time you do the 100 metre dash
You increase your chances of breaking out in a rash
If the only thing that runs is your nose
You`ll avoid blisters breaking out on your toes
So think twice before you go lacing up those trainers
Unless a medical team you have on retainers
If by running you hope to avoid being left on the shelf
Think for a minute of the damage you`re doing to yourself
Perhaps a peaceful walk at a pace set slow
Will stop you becoming a John or Jane Doe

This is a photograph from the first annual running of the "Mullingar 10" - a 10 mile road race and fun run which was held in Dalystown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday July 27th 2014 at 11:00. Dalystown is a rural parish situated about 6 miles south of Mullingar. The race was organised by Mullingar Harriers who promoted the event. There was almost 400 participants in the event. The race follows a simple 'figure of 8' route. The race starts from Dalystown National School and heads north briefly to Dalystown cross-roads where there is a left turn which brings runners along the L1122 road. The only real cross-over of the route is at the 2.5 and 7.5 mile mark. The race completes a loop between 2.5 and the 7.5 mile mark which brings runners into the locality of Ballinagore. The final 2.5 miles of the race brings runners back through Cloneheigue and the final 1.5 miles of the race is along straight road heading north back to Dalystown and the finish outside of Wallace's Pub.
The course was a mixture of long straight level sections of road with some short rolling hills which made for a challenging but overall fair course. The race took place is warm temperatures with a strong southerly breeze in the face of runners for stretches along the route. However some beautiful mature hedgerows along the mostly rural roads provided shade and shelter from the sun for runners.
This was the first year of the event and going on today's event it will become an annual fixture on the calendar. Clubs from all over the North Leinster region and beyond were represented today. Refreshments were provided outside Wallace's Pub at the Finish line. Well done to Mullingar Harriers and all the many volunteers who helped make today's race a wonderful success.
We have a large set of photographs from the event today. The full set is accessible at: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157645912529346/ - They were taken at the start and finish of the event.

This is a photograph is one of a set of photographs from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2013 which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 13th August 2014 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. The race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands. The race offers prizes in all categories. Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games.

The Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the final major race in summer road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer comes less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh. One of the enduring symbols of the Castlepollard 5KM is the tireless work of Andy MacEoin of North Westmeath AC who has been a visitor to almost every road race in the Midlands and beyond over the past number of months to publicize the event. Many of the participants tonight will have seen Andy's strategically placed advertising signs around other road race routes. Certainly this work, and that of many other members of North Westmeath AC, has paid off well.
The race begins near the center of the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. The gardens, like the castle are on a grand scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb before the race rejoins it's outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 1100M from the gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish passing the GAA grounds with finish line just outside the local Fire Station.
One of the show pieces of the race landscape is Tullynally Castle. The name Tullynally is an adaption of 'Tulaigh an Eallaigh' – the Hill of the Swan. The hill overlooks Lough Derravaragh, the legendary lake of the Children of Lir who were turned into swans. Tullynally Castle is still a family home to this day. Details of visitor times and other information is available on the links below.
This year over 450 participants took part in the race. This represented another great attendance. Last year's Castlepollard 5KM set the bar very high for future races with a record participation of just under 470 on the night. The race in 2013 showed an increase of over 100 participants from the previous record of 366 set at the 2012 event. It goes without saying that the Castlepollard 5KM has become one of the "must do" road race events in the midlands. Everything that is good about club road racing in Ireland can be found here.
We have a large set of photographs from the event today. The full set is accessible at: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/14714159280/ - They were taken at the start and finish of the event.

We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

Abellio London 8568 (YX11HPC) is seen at Uxbridge High Street about to finish a journey from Lombardy Retail Park.
This is a photograph from the 3rd Annual Meath Spring Half Marathon and 10KM Road Races hosted by Bohermeen AC on the 2nd March 2014 at 12:00 at Bohermeen, Ardbraccan, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland. This year's event included a 10KM race which replaced the 5KM event held on the previous years. This event has grown quickly in popularity over the past few years with this year's entry of 700 beating the previous race numbers of 680. This half marathon event is perfectly placed in the Irish running calendar as it provides runners of all levels and abilities an opportunity to test the half marathon distance in preparation for a Spring Marathon or as the first serious running goal of the New Year. Bohermeen AC is steeped in Irish athletics history since 1927 and it is this experience and exceptional community spirit and volunteering which has made this event today so successful. The very heavy rain that fell on the 10KM race and the begining of the Half Marathon did nothing to dampen the spirits of the participants. In fact, despite a head wind at certain parts of the course, this was a perfect day for road racing.
Our full set of photographs from today's event are available on Flickr at the following link http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157641717197563/. This set of photographs is mostly of the Half Marathon race but there are some from the 10KM event.

The Satellite Navigation Coordinates to Bohermeen are [53.650882,-6.77989] and is accessible using the M3, N2 and N52
The routing for the 2014 event has changed slightly from previous year. In 2014 the race starts about 100m away from the Bohermeen Club Race HQ [See Google StreetView in the direction of the imagery goo.gl/maps/rtj1X] and the race proceeds down the road towards Navan. Just before the 1st mile the race takes a right turn [see Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/iGrR0] which brings runners on the route of the famous Patrick Bell 5KM Road Race route held at Bohermeen every summer. Then the route turns slightly eastwards and this brings the race along a beautiful stretch of rural countryside road. This connects runners with the main loop [see Google StreetView goo.gl/maps/gLI1l] where the race follows the N51 towards Navan. The race must now complete this loop (which passes through the start area and past the finish) and then a full loop again before finishing in the Athletics track. The only hills to speak of in this course are on the the stretch where the race route crosses the M3 motorway (see Google Streetview - as of March 2014 their imagery is a little out of date for the M3 goo.gl/maps/tcdJX). The only major climb on the course must be tackled twice as the road rises up over the M3 Motorway. This comes at about the 5M and 11.5 Mile mark in the race.

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
