And you thought Ruby was only good for coding? The recipe follows.
Heat up 1 tbsp of olive oil and 2 tbsp butter in a pot.
Throw in 1/4 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp coriander, 1/2 tsp chili powder, let them simmer for a sec.
Add a large chopped onion and 3-4 cloves of minced garlic.
Shred 3-4 carrots and 2-3 medium-size beets, in the pot they go.
Saute on medium heat until carrots and beets are soft.
In the meantime, cut up 4-5 potatoes, and ploink them into the pot when carrots and beets are ready.
Pour chicken/vegetable broth and/or water to your liking (less water for "stewy", more water for "soupy").
Stir in half-a-bitsy-can of tomato paste (or not, if you don't like tomatoey soup).
Add 1/4 small cabbage head, finely sliced or shredded.
Sprinkle a bit of dill weed, eh, maybe a touch of parsley.
Bring to boil, turn down the heat, and let it be for 20 mins.
To serve, don't forget to plop a spoonful of sour cream on top. Crackers are optional. Green onions or chives are always good, but I didn't have either handy. Eat and celebrate beautiful programming languages.

Winged Jewel
(The Huming, Bird)
Feathered fire of emerald .
Aflashing through the air,
Its throat a glowing jewel,
A ruby solitaire.
Intrepid wings are whirring
In airy, fairy flight,
Careening through the sunshine,
A scintillating sprite.
Then pendant o'er flower
It dips its dainty hill
And gathers honeyed nectar
From flowery cup and frill.
Now darting, swiftly turning,
It seeks the trumpet vine,
A little tropic jewel
Aflame with nectared wine.

Ruby will be five months old next week (!!) and she's growing fast. We try and weigh her every four weeks or so and today was baby clinic day, so we headed down there to assess her chubbiness.
In four weeks she has gained a healthy 2lbs 1oz and is now creating back pain for both of us with her hefty 15lbs 14oz (7.22kg) weight. She also grew another 2cms and most of her 3-6 month clothes are starting to creak at the seams.
Most of the increased weight gain is probably down to the recent introduction of formula milk but she's always been a healthy eater and was quite large when she was born. She's continuing to eat and sleep really well and looking more and more beautiful every day.
I've had some lovely moments with her today, making her laugh by making funny noises and generally arsing around with her.
It's my girl!
Ruby Beach is one of the real treats of the Olympic coast. It is easily accessed so draws a large number of people. Go early enough, however, and you're likely to have the beach to yourself.
Tannin-laden Cedar Creek created a fresh water lagoon in 2007, the year of this photograph, that created a brown reflection for the trees. The storms of winter, however, often change the geography of the land. What was once a still lagoon is now a raging channel.
