A Ruby Throated Hummingbird feeding at a petunia on our deck in MA. Captured with a Nikon D7200 with a 100mm lens, sturdy tripod and a remote shutter release so the birds weren't disturbed.

Ruby had a play date with Nick's friend's staffie Bruiser. It was the first time she has played roughhouse with a boy dog, and it was so funny to watch her trying to be top dog! bruiser outweighed her by heaps.

This is my first Hummingbird photo of 2019. I have see a couple of other Hummingbirds but not when I had a camera in hand.

I was sitting on my front porch looking at my neighbor's flowers when this little bird showed up. The lighting is of little help in determining whether it is male or female. A Ruby-throated Hummingbird's throat is ruby only if it's male and the light hits it just right.

Ruby-tailed wasp (Chrysis viridula) stalking mason wasp (Odynerus spinipes) nest burrows. Dorset, UK.

The ruby-tails are a type of 'cuckoo wasp' and lay their eggs in the nests of this species.

Two things I hadn't fully anticipated: a. they're tiny, and b. they were half-way up a near vertical, unstable, almost unassailable gully wall.
