Ruby Beach is one of the real treats of the Olympic coast. It is easily accessed so draws a large number of people. Go early enough, however, and you're likely to have the beach to yourself.

Tannin-laden Cedar Creek created a fresh water lagoon in 2007, the year of this photograph, that created a brown reflection for the trees. The storms of winter, however, often change the geography of the land. What was once a still lagoon is now a raging channel.

I don't really know anything about photography. I have been playing with a nice camera to try to understand how things like ISO, shutter speed and aperture effect things. I think I'm starting to understand but it's like I have to keep learning it again cause the information just pops out of my head as soon as it goes in.

Yet another photo extracted from a video shot at the cactus-site in Boa Nova.

Here Ketil Knudsen (a gentleman from Norway) is joyfully hunting shots of the Ruby-topaz HB when it's showing the gorgeous orange bib and scarlet cap.

I'm not sure he made it in that go, but in the end he nailed it.

Plenty of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were on-site today at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in Holly Springs. They were getting fat, as was the one above, in preparation for the 2,100 trek to Central and South America.

Ruby has very Celtic colouring...my hair was red when I was younger and I got teased unmercifully at school for it, and my freckles as I was probably one of about 2 redheads!!!!!!

The red kangaroo is the world's largest marsupial. Red kangaroos hop along on their powerful hind legs at great speed. A red kangaroo can reach speeds of over 35 miles an hour. Their bounding gait allows them to cover 25 feet (8 meters) in a single leap and to jump 6 feet high!

Female red kangaroos are smaller, lighter, and faster than males. They also boast a blue-hued coat, so many Australians call them "blue fliers. That's why Ruby appears to be grey-blue in color.
