Hiking to the saddle between Ruby Peak and Mount Owen in the Ruby Range outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. Once you get over the saddle you get this amazing view:
Me and Ruby went for a day out in Scarborough and ended up walking to the Sealife centre and not actually going in it haha. I think theres a slight light leak on this shot. One of my backs is dodgy. The next two shots after this have it pretty bad. Shot on 160s with a +1 close up filter.
I have been photographing the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that visit our garden since 2010. They have always seemed unconcerned by my presence, often flying right up to me and hovering near me. They also would perch reliably at the same locations in the garden, making it easy to photograph them.
This year has been different. Their visits to the feeders are shorter and they do not perch at the favored spots of past years.
It makes me wonder if these hummers are newbies. Perhaps the "regulars" of past years have passed away; hummingbirds have relatively short life spans.
On August 27, 2025, as the sun was setting, I noticed there was a sudden flurry of activity between two of the hummers at the feeders located in the front garden area. I sat on the front porch and began shooting the activity. The two birds chattered and chased each other, and between the chases, they took long drinks from the feeders. I shot until there was almost no light left. They are fueling up for migration!
"The oldest known Ruby-throated Hummingbird to be banded was 9 years and 1 month of age. Almost all hummingbirds of 7 years or more in age are females, with males rarely surviving past 5 years of age. Reasons for higher mortality in males may include loss of weight during the breeding season due to the high energetic demands of defending a territory followed by energetically costly migration." Ruby-tailed wasp (Chrysis viridula) stalking mason wasp (Odynerus spinipes) nest burrows. Dorset, UK.
The ruby-tails are a type of 'cuckoo wasp' and lay their eggs in the nests of this species.
Two things I hadn't fully anticipated: a. they're tiny, and b. they were half-way up a near vertical, unstable, almost unassailable gully wall.
With thanks to Chris.
