Arc welding repair on my motorcycle rack (India)

Luggage racks on Royal Enfield Bullet motorbike have the tendency to crack and break frequently, due to weak brackets, poor design and vibrations.

This guy fixed my cracked brackets in a small village in Sikkim.

He is arc welding with no protection of any kind, not even welding glasses, which is quite common in poorer areas that only have the bear minimum supplies and equipment. Of course he did an excellent job, and charged me the normal price for the repair (a couple of dollars).

For me, this is the most pleasurable view of a motorcycle - the 3/4 rear view. I can almost physically feel chemicals being released in my brain with this view. Like the feeling you get when you see your girl after a long absence. You want to just squeeze her.

Welder repairing a broken shock on my motorbike, in Sikkim (India)

The ring at the top of my right shock broke (that's where the top of the shock gets attached to the bracket on the frame). You can see the shock with the broken ring on this photo.

I was lucky to find a welder in the closest village. His shop was closed and he was home on a day off, but he opened it for me.

Of course he did not have a replacement shock that would fit, but in a pile of mechanical junk, he found an old broken shock from a minibus that had a ring about the same size. He managed to cut it off and arc-weld it to my shock. See also this photo and this photo.

Then he had to do some work on the frame bracket since the new ring was slightly larger than the original and would not fit.

After 4 hours of work, my motorbike was fixed. This guy did an excellent job, as the repaired shock never broke again. And this guy charged by the regular price for the work, about $3. I am so grateful. Indian mechanics and welders are so resourceful!

Jill & I visited the factory that makes the superb Royal Enfield Bullets..! The factory is in Chennai on the east coast of India. We were in India for two weeks at the end of May beginning of June. It was very hot! Just before the monsoon came.. Temps around 40-42deg C.!

We visited our son Tom & his wife Ellen who are working with a church in Mumbai for a year. Then we popped over to Chennai & Pondicherry for a few days, then back to Mumbai to spend some more time with Tom & El before coming home.!

Royal Enfield is an Indian motorcycle manufacturer, headquartered and manufactured in Chennai, India. Royal Enfield is the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in continuous production.

The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901 by The Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch, Worcestershire, England, the company was responsible for the design and original production of the Royal Enfield Bullet, the longest-lived motorcycle design in history. Licensed from the original English Royal Enfield by Madras Motors, the company is now a subsidiary of Eicher Motors, an Indian automaker. The company makes classic-looking motorcycles including the Royal Enfield Bullet, Classic 350, Royal Enfield Thunderbird, Meteor 350, Classic 500, Interceptor 650, Continental, Hunter 350 and many more. Royal Enfield also makes adventurous and offroading motorcycles like the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Their motorcycles are equipped with single-cylinder and twin-cylinder engines.

This is my friend Bun Bun (Chelsea), trying to put a Royal Enfield bullet motorbike on its Center Stand, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival, near Allahabad (India).

The motorbike was a bit too heavy for her. I ended up using this motorbike for the rest of my trip in India and Nepal.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Royal Enfield was the brand name under which the Enfield Motor Cycle Company (founded 1909) manufactured motorcycles, bicycles, lawnmowers and stationary engines.

The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901; the original British concern was defunct by 1970. The Enfield Cycle Company is responsible for the design and original production of the Royal Enfield Bullet, the longest-lived motorcycle design in history.

The Enfield Cycle Company began business making parts for the Enfield rifle. This legacy is reflected in the company logo[disputed – discuss], a cannon, and their motto, "Made Like A Gun".

In 1955, Enfield Cycle Company partnered with Madras Motors in India in forming Enfield of India, based in Chennai, and started assembling the 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Madras.

The first machines were assembled from components imported from England. Starting in 1957, Enfield of India acquired the machines necessary to build components in India, and by 1962 all components were made in India.

Royal Enfield produced bicycles at its Redditch factory until it closed in early 1967.

The company's last new bicycle was the 'Revelation' small wheeler, which was released in 1965

Production of motorcycles ceased in 1970 and the original Redditch, Worcestershire-based company was dissolved in 1971.

Enfield of India continued producing the 'Bullet', and began branding its motorcycles 'Royal Enfield' in 1999. A lawsuit over the use of 'Royal', brought by trademark owner David Holder, was judged in favour of Enfield of India, who now produce motorcycles under the Royal Enfield name.

Riding my motorbike on the dirt road between Tatopani and Jomsom, in the Annapurnas (Nepal)

This is the "official" road, but during the dry season, people also use a slightly better gravel road in the river-bed, but it involves crossing water several times.

If you like this photo, follow me on instagram (tristan_sf) and don't hesitate to leave a comment or email me.

One of the "new" Royal Enfields, made in India and very closely based on the original dispatch bike from the 40's. Only modern, visible" addition here is the front disc brake and according to some people who knows, they also improved the ignition system. Nice style and look to it too.

My well loaded 350 Bullet at Doullens in France. We are just about to set off on the return trip to Calais. It's dry now but it poured the whole trip back. Sitting on the ferry in wet leather - ugh! I am carrying my friends luggage too as it's not cool to have bags on a Goldie - is it.

Royal Enfield Classic (2007-on) Engine 500cc Single UCE OHV

ROYAL ENFIELD SET

www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157625830205063...

The Royal Enfield Bullet was originally a British overhead valve single cylinder four-stroke motorcycle made by Royal Enfield in Redditch, West Midlands, but now produced by Royal Enfield Motors, the successor to the British company, at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in India.

The current range was launched with new engines in 2007. The 500 cc UCE features fuel injection, and has greater power than any Royal Enfield 500 cc motor. The 500 cc UCE, with an integrated five-speed gearbox, powers the current Bullet Classic model. Starting in 2009, this engine was available only in the EU to satisfy emissions regulations, but from 2010 also became available in the USA.

The Classic Desert Storm comes to you with a “sand” paint scheme reminiscent of the world war II era, when Royal Enfield were used extensively by the military with 1950s style nacelle and toolboxes, traditional paint scheme and buffed engine components.

The green machine in the background is the Classic Battle Green.
