This is our niece's boy Jacob racing towards his first birthday next month. It's raining today so I thought I'd mess around with photoshop. The Rocket racer is a tin clockwork toy and I took the photo from my private jet (only kidding)

I really liked this ship in the movie, and after much searching finally tracked down these photos from a wiki of screenshots and concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rocket at his favorite place near the river! Loves smelling and digging for gophers out here, though I don't know what he'd do if he ever found one! 😂 My poor Penny isn't feeling well...gotta go get her medicine.

L-3: Our Soyuz rocket with the spacecraft inside is rolled out to the launchpad. The system to keep it upright is ingeniously simple. By using counterweights the rocket is held upright but the slightest force (such as liftoff) pushes the supports out of the way, no complicated electronics required! Did you ever wonder how a launch time is recorded? Easy, the rocket is standing on a large switch, as soon as it is depressed (i.e. we are launched) the time is recorded and we have a launch time!

 

L-3 : Transfert de la fusée jusqu’au pas de tir. Ça a l’air impressionnant, mais le système pour la faire tenir à la verticale n’a rien de compliqué : on utilise tout simplement des contrepoids. Pas besoin non plus d’électroniques sophistiquées pour dégager la voie à la fusée lors du lancement, la force du décollage suffisant largement pour faire basculer les structures de soutien en arrière. Comment arrive-t-on à connaître l’heure exacte du décollage ? Là aussi, c’est facile : la fusée est installée sous une sorte de grand bouton-poussoir qui est relâché quand elle décolle, ce qui déclenche l’enregistrement de l’heure du lancement.

Stephenson's Rocket was an early steam locomotive of 0-2-2 wheel arrangement, built in Newcastle at the Forth Street Works of Robert Stephenson and Company in 1829.

 

A common misconception is that Rocket was the first steam locomotive. In fact the first steam locomotive to run on tracks was built by Richard Trevithick 25 years earlier, but his designs were not developed beyond the experimental stage. Then followed the first commercially-successful twin-cylinder steam locomotives built by Matthew Murray in Holbeck for the Middleton Railway between Middleton and Leeds, West Yorkshire. George Stephenson, as well as a number of other engineers, had built steam locomotives before. Rocket was in some ways an evolution, not a revolution.

 

Rocket's claim to fame is that it was the first 'modern' locomotive, introducing several innovations that have been used on almost every steam locomotive built since. There have been differences in opinion regarding who should be given the credit for designing Rocket. George Stephenson had designed several locomotives before but none as advanced as Rocket. At the time that Rocket was being designed and built at the Forth Banks Works, he was living in Liverpool overseeing the building of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. His son Robert had recently returned from a stint working in South America and resumed as managing director of Robert Stephenson and Company. He was in daily charge of designing and constructing the new locomotive. Although he was in frequent contact with his father in Liverpool and probably received advice from him, it is difficult not to give the majority of the credit for the design to Robert.

 

In 1862 Rocket was donated to the Patent Office Museum in London by the Thompsons of Milton Hall, near Brampton, in Cumbria. The locomotive is now exhibited at the Science Museum in London in much-modified form compared to its original state. Such are the changes in the engine from 1829 that The Engineer magazine, c.1884, concluded that "it seems to us indisputable that the Rocket of 1829 and 1830 were totally different engines".

I tell ya, trying to jump up and go get a bird shot is quite difficult when I'm dodging and trying to step over Penny and Rocket!!! The minute they even sense me getting up, they're right there!!! Rocket has much more interest in the birds than Penny. He'll sit quiet and watch them. Maybe Penny will learn by association!!!! LOL

Two man rocket for exploration.

 

Well it took long enough, but I finally finished it, I kept building it partially then deciding to destroy it and completely restart, but I finally got something I like done with it.

The Rocket Center is a strip mall at 584 Court Street (U.S. Route 11), east of Binghamton, New York. This sign is a great example of Populuxe/Raygun Gothic. Today, this area is something like a vice district, with three strip clubs and a sleazy motel in close proximity.

Most of the vapor trail is high enough it's still lit up by the sun - including the lowest part, which is clearly reddened!

 

The bright spot in the middle of the frame, below the trail, is Venus. The one in the thicker part is the previous stage after separation.

 

Probably launched from Vandenberg, judging by the trajectory, and probably SpaceX, based on the fact that they seem to do a lot more launches than anyone else these days.

In 1938, aviator Cliff Secord acquired a jetpack, which was the invention of either Doc Savage or Howard Hughes.

 

Adventure ensued.

The Rocketeer opened twenty years ago today. To celebrate one of my favorite films, I created this photo to look like a late 1930’s slide. I envision a photographer looking outside a passenger plane window taking photos of the clouds. Suddenly, a mysterious figure jet packs into view and click-snap, this photo is created.

 

Long live the Rocketeer and big thanks to the late great Dave Stevens for creating one of the best comic book adventure heroes!
