An ad van featuring the work of Vanguard ans similar operations by other Forces is currently touring the region.
Greater Manchester Police is leading the way in a new North West crackdown on armed robberies, following the Force’s major success over the past year, resulting in 33 offenders being convicted and sentenced to a total of 204 years.
These excellent results have been achieved thanks to Vanguard, GMP’s operation aimed at reducing armed robberies, and have made a significant contribution to the 58 per cent reduction in the number of cash-in-transit (CIT) attacks across the North West during 2010.
The North West will become a no-go area for armed robbers in the run up to Christmas as officers from Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and North Wales will work with the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) to safeguard commercial and financial businesses, along with CIT vehicles during their delivery and pick-up times.
“The success we’ve had in arresting and convicting so many offenders should be a warning to anyone thinking of committing this type of crime - there is no hiding place for them and they risk spending Christmas behind bars. The fact that so many key offenders have been locked up across Greater Manchester in the last year due to the successful work of Vanguard, means that the number of CIT robberies has dramatically reduced,” said Detective Chief Inspector Pat McKelvey, from Greater Manchester Police’s Vanguard team.
“However, there are still too many innocent victims suffering at the hands of criminals who do not hesitate to use violence. With Christmas approaching – traditionally one of the busiest times of year for this type of crime - we are determined to keep our communities safer by targeting, deterring and disrupting criminals who carry out CIT attacks and robberies of commercial and financial premises.”
A variety of tactics will be used to prevent these robberies, including armed police vehicles escorting high-risk security vehicles as they carry out cash deliveries; the use of overt and covert CCTV monitoring; patrol cars following cash-handling vehicles; plus all cash containers will include either Smartwater or a dye, which will be released if opened illegally.
In addition, the Force helicopter will shadow the vehicles from the air during collections or deliveries, enabling any activity to be monitored. While all North West police forces will continue to share intelligence and provide assistance for cross-border deliveries.
Detective Chief Inspector Pat McKelvey concludes: “I would like to stress that this is a devastating and often violent crime that can cause deep distress for the victims. Without key information from the public we wouldn’t be able to remove these offenders from the street. Therefore, we would ask the public to be vigilant and if anyone has any information to help us catch those responsible, please call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Police seized 41 vehicles during a two-day traffic operation earlier this week.
Officers were out in force with partner agencies as part of Operation Unity, which targeted a range of offences on the roads.
Check sites were set up in Gorton, Eastlands, Bolton and Manchester and during the course of the two days 575 vehicles were stopped.
Twelve vehicles were seized for being used illegally in the UK, 24 vehicles were seized for no insurance, two were seized for being driven without a licence and three were seized by the DVLA.
Police also issued 100 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) to motorists, including 43 to drivers using a mobile phone and 16 for seatbelt offences.
The Drive & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) issued 55 prohibitions to commercial drivers for vehicle defects.
One vehicle was dealt with for red diesel, six taxi drivers were suspended and a 50-year old man was arrested on suspicion of two robberies in Tameside and remains in police custody for questioning.
Sergeant Garry Lyle from GMP’s Traffic Enforcement Unit said: “Partners and officers came together over the last two days to target offenders and send a stark reminder out to motorists that we will not let them compromise the safety of others on our roads.
“The Traffic Enforcement Unit deals with offences such as these on a daily basis but not to the same extent. We’re really grateful to our partners for assisting us throughout the operation and look forward to doing more of the same in the very near future.”

This is quite a scene, there's just been an attempted armed robbery of a Securicor van. It was a pretty gruesome one, and the occasion where the police finally were one step ahead of the criminal gang dubbed the successors to the Krays, Richardsons etc. you can read more about the incident and the background to it here.

It's quite a story!
In researching the story I found an amazing list of notable events of major criminals throughout history which told me that the exact date of this event was 27th November.

At this unassuming bridge (well, just down to the right actually), the Great Train Robbery took place on 8th August 1963
A picture sent to me earlier by my sister. This Fiesta had been used in a failed bank robbery, used to ram raid the front of the bank. It surprisingly caused little damage and failed to get them in, so the gang set the car on fire and escaped in a Range Rover.
From here it looks like the fire brigade have forced the boot open.

On 01/31/13, at approximately 9:00pm, the Subway Restaurant at 2522 Allen Blvd in the City of Middleton was robbed at gunpoint. A white male entered the store armed with a black handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspect is described as a white male with blue eyes, last seen wearing a dark colored hooded jacket, blue jeans, black winter mask and athletic shoes. He was last seen running south from the business and may have been in the parking lot of Harbor Athletic Club before and/or after the robbery.

A coalition of campaign groups gathered on 16th Feb 2013 at the Dept. of Energy and Climate Change on Whitehall to protest against ongoing excessive fuel price rises and proposed cuts in Winter Fuel Payments. Millions of poor, sick or disabled people are already experiencing extreme fuel poverty as they are faced with the stark choice of either eating or keeping warm, and deaths by hypothermia amongst disabled benefit claimants, pensioners and the sick have increased alarmingly as subsistence benefits are slashed by David Cameron's government.

The great train robbery" Well today 08/23/2021 & 8/24/2021 the Atlantic Coast Line Locomotive No. 1504 was placed on flatbed semi's to leave the area its only really known as home Jacksonville Florida. Just one more piece of railroad history this town could really not care about. Sure its going to be restored for U.S. Sugar Corp.'s historic Sugar Express tourist train attraction. And one more piece of Railroad history in Jax/Fl will be lost forever. So I say Goodbye to the Atlantic Coast Line Locomotive No. 1504.
VOLANT, Pa.-- State police say they need the public's help in tracking down a robbery suspect wanted for holding up a bank in Volant in July. Troopers released a series of photos from the security cameras inside the Northwest Bank lobby on July 27, 2011. They say the suspect handed the teller a note claiming to have a weapon. However, no weapon is visible in the photos.
Police say the suspect used a red or burgundy in color Honda Ridgeline style vehicle with no license plate for his getaway. The suspect was reported to have a southern accent.
They describe the robber as a tanned white man, 6ft, 180lbs, 23-26 years old, neatly trimmed short facial hair, sunglasses, Buffalo Bills Baseball Cap, Buffalo Bills Grey Long sleeved t-shirt, blue pants, and black tennis shoes.

On 01/31/13, at approximately 9:00pm, the Subway Restaurant at 2522 Allen Blvd in the City of Middleton was robbed at gunpoint. A white male entered the store armed with a black handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspect is described as a white male with blue eyes, last seen wearing a dark colored hooded jacket, blue jeans, black winter mask and athletic shoes. He was last seen running south from the business and may have been in the parking lot of Harbor Athletic Club before and/or after the robbery.

Help us locate a man wanted on warrants in connection with numerous bank robberies in Calgary.
Between Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, and Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, eight banks in southwest Calgary were robbed by a man who posed as a customer and waited in line to be served. Once called upon by the teller, the man produced a robbery note and was given an undisclosed amount of money before leaving the bank. No one was injured.
Abdulrizak Osman Jeyte, is wanted in connection with these robberies. Although he is originally from the Ottawa area, investigators believe he is currently in Calgary.
Jeyte is described as black, approximately 5’9”, 130 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of a scorpion on his chest.

The Temple of Heaven, literally the Altar of Heaven (simplified Chinese: 天坛; traditional Chinese: 天壇; pinyin: Tiāntán; Manchu: Abkai mukdehun) is a complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. It has been regarded as a Taoist temple, although Chinese Heaven worship, especially by the reigning monarch of the day, pre-dates Taoism.
The temple complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, who was also responsible for the construction of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The complex was extended and renamed Temple of Heaven during the reign of the Jiajing Emperor in the 16th century. The Jiajing Emperor also built three other prominent temples in Beijing, the Temple of Sun (日壇) in the east, the Temple of Earth (地壇) in the north, and the Temple of Moon (月壇) in the west . The Temple of Heaven was renovated in the 18th century under the Qianlong Emperor. Due to the deterioration of state budget, this became the last large-scale renovation of the temple complex in the imperial time.
The temple was occupied by the Anglo-French Alliance during the Second Opium War. In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, the Eight Nation Alliance occupied the temple complex and turned it into the force's temporary command in Beijing, which lasted for one year. The occupation desecrated the temple and resulted in serious damage to the building complex and the garden. Robberies of temple artifacts by the Alliance were also reported. With the downfall of the Qing, the temple complex was left unmanaged. The neglect of the temple complex led to the collapse of several halls in the following years.
In 1914, Yuan Shikai, then President of the Republic of China, performed a Ming prayer ceremony at the temple, as part of an effort to have himself declared Emperor of China. In 1918 the temple was turned into a park and for the first time open to the public.
The Temple of Heaven was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and was described as "a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design which simply and graphically illustrates a cosmogony of great importance for the evolution of one of the world’s great civilizations..." as the "symbolic layout and design of the Temple of Heaven had a profound influence on architecture and planning in the Far East over many centuries."
The surroundings of the Temple of Heaven are now a very popular park for exercising.
The Temple grounds cover 2.73 km² of parkland and comprises three main groups of constructions, all built according to strict philosophical requirements:
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿) is a magnificent triple-gabled circular building, 36 meters in diameter and 38 meters tall, built on three levels of marble stone base, where the Emperor prayed for good harvests. The building is completely wooden, with no nails. The original building was burned down by a fire caused by lightning in 1889. The current building was re-built several years after the incident.
The Imperial Vault of Heaven (皇穹宇) is a single-gabled circular building, built on a single level of marble stone base. It is located south of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and resembles it, but is smaller. It is surrounded by a smooth circular wall, the Echo Wall, that can transmit sounds over large distances. The Imperial Vault is connected to the Hall of Prayer by the Vermilion Steps Bridge, a 360 meter long raised walkway that slowly ascends from the Vault to the Hall of Prayer.
The Circular Mound Altar (圜丘坛) is the altar proper, located south of the Imperial Vault of Heaven. It is an empty circular platform on three levels of marble stones, each decorated by lavishly carved dragons. The numbers of various elements of the Altar, including its balusters and steps, are either the sacred number nine or its nonuples. The center of the altar is a round slate called the Heart of Heaven(天心石) or the Supreme Yang(太阳石), where the Emperor prayed for favorable weather. Thanks to the design of the altar, the sound of the prayer will be reflected by the guardrail, creating significant resonance, which was supposed to help the prayer communicate with the Heaven. The Altar was built in 1530 by the Jiajing Emperor and rebuilt in 1740.
In ancient China, the Emperor of China was regarded as the Son of Heaven, who administered earthly matters on behalf of, and representing, heavenly authority. To be seen to be showing respect to the source of his authority, in the form of sacrifices to heaven, was extremely important. The temple was built for these ceremonies, mostly comprising prayers for good harvests.
Twice a year the Emperor and all his retinue would move from the Forbidden city through Beijing to encamp within the complex, wearing special robes and abstaining from eating meat. No ordinary Chinese was allowed to view this procession or the following ceremony. In the temple complex the Emperor would personally pray to Heaven for good harvests. The highpoint of the ceremony at the winter solstice was performed by the Emperor on the Earthly Mount. The ceremony had to be perfectly completed; it was widely held that the smallest of mistakes would constitute a bad omen for the whole nation in the coming year.
Earth was represented by a square and Heaven by a circle; several features of the temple complex symbolize the connection of Heaven and Earth, of circle and square. The whole temple complex is surrounded by two cordons of walls; the outer wall has a taller, semi-circular northern end, representing Heaven, and a shorter, rectangular southern end, representing the Earth. Both the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Circular Mound Altar are round, each standing on a square yard, again representing Heaven and Earth.
The number nine represents the Emperor and is evident in the design of the Circular Mound Altar: a single round marmor plate is surrounded by a ring of nine plates, then a ring of 18 plates, and so on for a total of nine surrounding rings, the outermost having 9×9 plates.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests has four inner, twelve middle and twelve outer pillars, representing the four seasons, twelve months and twelve traditional Chinese hours respectively. Combined together, the twelve middle and twelve outer pillars represent the traditional solar term.
All the buildings within the Temple have special dark blue roof tiles, representing the Heaven.
The Seven-Star Stone Group, east of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, represents the seven peaks of Taishan Mountain, a place of Heaven worship in classical China.
