'Stop the Great Fuel Robbery' protest at Dept. Of Energy - 16.02.2013
A coalition of campaign groups gathered on 16th Feb 2013 at the Dept. of Energy and Climate Change on Whitehall to protest against ongoing excessive fuel price rises and proposed cuts in Winter Fuel Payments. Millions of poor, sick or disabled people are already experiencing extreme fuel poverty as they are faced with the stark choice of either eating or keeping warm, and deaths by hypothermia amongst disabled benefit claimants, pensioners and the sick have increased alarmingly as subsistence benefits are slashed by David Cameron's government.
Groups represented at the protest were UK Uncut, Fuel Poverty Action, Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC), Disabled Activists Network (DAN,) WinVisible, Greater London Pensioner's Association, Global Women's Strike and All African Women's Group.
As a grand finale the protesters set up a blockade of wheelchairs - one with someone handcuffed to a wheel - across one carriageway of Whitehall, disrupting Southbound traffic for over an hour before peacefully dispersing.

On 18 October 1861, Henry Garrett and his accomplices, known as the 'Garrett Gang' carried out a "most daring Highway Robbery under Arms" at the foot of the Maungatua range, on the track between Gabriel's Gully and Dunedin. Garrett had a long history of run-ins with the law. In 1854 'Long Harry', as Garrett was known, with three accomplices robbed the Ballarat branch of the Bank of Victoria of at least £14,000. He escaped to England but a detective sent in pursuit spotted him in London and Henry Beresford Garrett, as he now styled himself, was returned to Melbourne for trial. He was sentenced in November 1855 to 10 years' hard labour.
In 1861 Garrett was granted a ticket of leave, and on 7 October arrived in Dunedin on the SS Kembla en route for the Otago goldfields. After obtaining weapons by robbing a gunsmith, he and several companions carried out the robberies in the Maungatua range. The 'Garrett gang' had overheard diggers boasting about the amount of gold they were carrying, and were thus able to choose whom to waylay. Fifteen captives were tied to trees, parted from gold and property, and then surprisingly treated to light refreshments. By the time they were finished, the gang had collected a gold watch, two silver watches, and approximately £400. There was panic in Dunedin when the victims eventually freed themselves and raised the alarm. Otago police initially detained only a few innocent diggers and a new member of their own force, but the gang's lookout was eventually caught. Henry Garrett was arrested in Sydney in December, and sentenced to eight years' imprisonment in Dunedin in May 1862.
This statement, sworn by William Maloney, comes from a Resident Magistrate’s Court case file relating to the trial of Henry Garrett, who was charged and eventually convicted of highway robbery under arms. Garrett was the ringleader of a gang of masked men. Garrett remained in Dunedin gaol until 1881. More hard labour followed, this time at Wellington's Mt Cook gaol. In July 1885 he was transferred to The Terrace gaol, which had a hospital. Here he died of chronic bronchitis on 3 September 1885.

Update: A 45-year-old Cary man has been arrested in connection with the robbery at Fifth Third Bank on Wednesday in Woodstock.
Michael Feterick, also known as Michael Retterly, was charged with bank robbery in federal court today. He remains in custody and was scheduled to make his first court appearance at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Iain D. Johnston, according to a release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison, a fine up to $250,000 and full restitution, the release said.
According to the complaint, Feterick entered Fifth Third Bank, located at 1745 S. Eastwood Dr., at about 10:50 a.m. and presented the teller with a note written with a black Sharpie pen stating, "Money, no dye pack." The teller gave Feterick the money from her drawer, according to the release.
Feterick was arrested late Wednesday at an Algonquin hotel by FBI agents and police officers from Woodstock and Crystal Lake, the release said.
Original Article:
No charges have been filed in connection with the robbery of the Fifth Third Bank in Crystal Lake on March 30.
The man who robbed the Fifth Third Bank is Woodstock on Wednesday is likely the same person who robbed another Fifth Third Bank branch in Crystal Lake on March 30, according to the FBI.
The FBI, who arrived on the scene about one hour after the heist, released surveillance photographs of the man who robbed the Woodstock bank at about 10:50 a.m. April 15. The bank is located at 1745 S. Eastwood Dr. in a stand-alone brick building next to the Quality Inn, near the intersection of Routes 14 and 47. The man did not display a weapon, and fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.
The suspect wore a blue hooded sweatshirt with "New York" stenciled on the front, sunglasses and hat. He is described as a white man with brown hair, about 37 years old, weighing about 180 pounds and standing between 5-feet-10-inches to 6-feet tall, according to FBI spokesperson Diane Carbonara in the Chicago office.
A police K-9 unit from the city of McHenry was immediately brought to the scene. Police were working to determine whether the suspect ran to an awaiting car, or if multiple getaway vehicles were involved. Woodstock Deputy Chief John Lieb said the department did not plan to issue additional information until he had was able to give one confirmed report. Police were still working Friday afternoon to gather evidence and interview employees located inside the bank.
Shortly after the robbery was reported, one person inside the bank reported having symptoms of a heart attack. After being checked by emergency personnel, that person was feeling better, a witness at the scene said.
The man suspected of robbing the Fifth Third Bank in Crystal Lake last month wore a red hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and grey hat. The robbery occurred at 4:18 p.m. at the branch, located at 265 W. Virginia St. (Route 14), and the suspect ran away on foot. The robber was never found.
Anyone with information about the robbery should contact the FBI-Chicago office at 312-421-6700.

Bank Robbery / Perp Shot
181 Montague Street @ Citibank Brooklyn, NY
2/5/2007 10:18 a.m.
An attempted bank robbery was thwarted in Brooklyn Heights yesterday morning when police shot a knife-wielding suspect in the abdomen, police officials said.
Customers and employees fled a Citibank branch at 181 Montague St. in the heart of Brooklyn's court district as a suspect wildly slashed the air with a six-inch blade, a witness, Ronald Pritchard, said.
"The guy was banging the knife against the plastic windows and knocking down the barriers where people would be waiting in line'" Mr. Pritchard said. "He was screaming: ‘Where's the money?'"
Mr. Pritchard, who works as a stocking clerk at a Rite Aid pharmacy across street from the bank, said that he and the bank's security guard were planning to jump the suspect and use pepper spray just as police arrived at 10:05 a.m. He also said the suspect appeared to be mentally impaired.
Two officers came in through the front entrance of the bank and implored the suspect to drop the knife. When the suspect swung the knife, shots were fired, Mr. Pritchard said. An officer fired one round at the suspect, striking him in the stomach, police said.
After the suspect was shot, the officers proceeded to kick the knife out of his hand and place him in handcuffs, Mr. Pritchard said.
A detail of the NYPD's Emergency Services Unit entered the rear of the bank after police arrived, a parking attendant on Montague Street, Tony Kanaff, 39, said.
The suspect was taken to Lutheran Hospital in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn, where he was listed in stable condition yesterday, police said.
During the attempted robbery, bank customers sprinted for the exits and ran down the front steps of the bank onto Montague Street, witnesses said. One man fell while going down the stairway but wasn't injured, Mr. Kanaff said.
The bustling block in Brooklyn Heights where the robbery occurred is lined with several other retail banks. Evan Thies, a spokesman for City Council Member David Yassky, who represents Brooklyn Heights, said robberies in the neighborhood were highly unusual.
The city saw a steep drop in armed bank robberies last year. There were 28 armed bank robberies in 2006, compared with 45 in 2005.

Regional agreement on maritime piracy to broaden scope to other illicit activity
An international agreement that has been instrumental in repressing piracy and armed robbery against ships in the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden is set to significantly broaden its scope.
Signatories to the Djibouti Code of Conduct have agreed to work towards extending its remit to address other illicit maritime activity that threatens safety and security in the region, such as marine terrorism, environmental crimes, human trafficking and Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
National focal points for the code, which was adopted under the auspices of the IMO in 2009,
have adopted a resolution expressing concern at the increasing risks from transnational organized crimes at sea and other threats to maritime safety and security in the region. They agreed to encourage information sharing on all illicit activities.
Training and other capacity-building activities implemented under the auspices of the Djibouti Code of Conduct have been credited with contributing to the reduction of piracy in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, alongside the efforts of merchant ships to implement IMO guidance and best management practices, naval forces continuing to deter and disrupt pirate activities and States continuing to prosecute suspected pirates and increasing their maritime law-enforcement capabilities.
But the focal points recognized that piracy in the region has merely been suppressed and its root causes have yet to be addressed. They agreed that, nonetheless, there is now a window of opportunity for IMO Member States in the region to implement capacity-building programmes to prevent a resurgence of piracy and to address wider maritime security issues, as a basis for sustainable development of the maritime sector.
The focal points were meeting this week (11-12 November) in the newly-completed Djibouti Regional Training Centre, which was formally opened by Mr. Moussa Ahmed Hassan, Djibouti’s Minister of Equipment and Transport, on Thursday 12 November. The Djibouti Regional Training Centre will play a key role in regional capacity-building initiatives under the Code of Conduct.
IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, speaking by video message during the ceremony, encouraged the Government of Djibouti to be imaginative in its use of the new building and to be proactive in maximizing its potential, for the benefit of the whole region. The centre could be used as a venue for wider port, maritime, law-enforcement or indeed any other training, conferences and meetings, as well as being a centre of excellence for regional maritime security training, he said.
“This impressive new centre will be a vital component in the provision of maritime security and other training in the Gulf of Aden and Western Indian Ocean area and fully supports IMO’s 2015 World Maritime Day theme: “Maritime education and training”. It should be an asset to Djibouti and to the region for many years to come,” Mr. Sekimizu said.
The national focal points meeting also approved the 2016 plan for regional training for Djibouti Code of Conduct countries.
Construction of the Djibouti Regional Training Centre was funded by Japan, through the Djibouti Code Trust Fund, with equipment provided by Denmark and the Republic of Korea.
IMO continues to support Member States to implement the Djibouti Code of Conduct through its Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP) and through the Djibouti Code Trust Fund. It also maintains a presence in the region, focussed on the code, with two staff members based in Nairobi, Kenya, whose primary role is training.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Mr. Chris Trelawny, Special Advisor to the IMO Secretary-General; His Excellency Tatsuo Arai, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Djibouti; His Excellency Joseph Silva, European Union Ambassador to Djibouti, Mr. Hassan Darar Houffaneh, Minister of Defence of Djibouti; Mr. Ali Mirah Chehem Daoud, Director of Maritime Affairs of Djibouti; Ms. Mina Houssein Doualeh, Director of the Djibouti Regional Training Centre; as well as senior government officials from Djibouti. Also present were representatives from Somalia and from Djibouti Code of Conduct signatories, donor countries and international training partners.
Djibouti code of conduct
The Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden (the Djibouti Code of Conduct) provides a framework for capacity building in the Gulf of Aden and Western Indian Ocean to counter the threat of piracy. The Code was signed on 29 January 2009 by the representatives of: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Seychelles, Somalia, the United Republic of Tanzania and Yemen. Comoros, Egypt, Eritrea, Jordan, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates have since signed, bringing the total to 20 countries. Since its adoption, the Code has become the major focus for facilitating transnational communication, coordination and cooperation in its four thematic broad pillars: delivering national and regional training, enhancing national legislation, information sharing and building counter-piracy capacity.
A bank was always the hub for a place like Gympie, defined by gold and greed. But sometimes the money never reached the bank ...
The Brisbane Courier
Tuesday 6 October 1868
HIGHWAY ROBBERY - STICKING UP THE GYMPIE MAIL COACH
We had hoped the sharp reception which the bush-thieves met from Mr. White, st Currie, the utter absence of all aid in the way of bush telegrams, and the presence of an efficient police force in the immediate neighbourhood, would have prevented the recurrence of this species of scoundrelism on the highway to our gold-fields, but we are disappointed. With all its risk there are creatures still to be found, it appears, who prefer taking the money of honest men to honestly working to obtain money of their own.
The particulars of the sticking-up, as they have reached us, are as follows :- The coach, with the mails, and three passengers left Gympie on Thursday morning, Sept. 3, about 6 o'clock. About half-an-hour after, and when about three miles from Gympie, the coach was descending a hill, and had nearly reached the bottom, when three men, with their faces covered, two of them armed with double-barreled guns, the other with a single-barreled gun, started from behind some trees, and commanded the driver to stop. The driver not being able to bring up the vehicle so soon as the men liked, they called out again, and threatened immediately to fire if they were not instantly obeyed. The driver called out he was pulling up as quick as he could, and brought the horses to a stand at the foot of the hill - a steep ascent before him, making it vain to attempt to escape by forcing the horses on. As soon as the coach was stopped, Mr Power was ordered out, and told to go and hold the horses, when one of the men came up to him and ordered him to 'shell out his cash,' when he drew out of his waistcoat pocket a five pound note, which did not satisfy the fellow; so he put his own fingers into the pocket and drew out two ten-pound notes.
One object in choosing this spot for the robbery seemed to be that the road there not only presented great facility for such an attachk, but that also the coach could easily be taken off the road into the bush. The coach was accordingly drawn two hundred yards from the road; the mail bags were taken out of it, and the three set to work to cut or tear open every letter in them, seemingly entirely without apprehension of danger in doing so, one of them putting his gun against a tree several yards off, the passengers being permitted to look on at the work of plunder.
[...]
The seemed very unexcited and methodical in their work; and to Mrs Farley, who was rather alarmed at their proceedings, they said, "Don't be afraid - we never touch ladies," by which we judge that this is not the first piece of villany of the kind they have been at. Having got all they wanted out of the letters, on leaving they told the driver to go on towards Maryborough, and not start for half-an-hour, for if he did they would come across him and blow his brains out.
[...]
The faces of the men were completely concealed, and their identification depends entirely on their general appearance and tone of their voices, but it is to be hoped these will prove sufficient to give a clue to who the men are, and, if captured, without doubt, to convict them.
The full report on the robbery is available here

SOOC , straight out of camera......View Large.....
This went down fast, pulled out the D300/70-300VR Nikkor just in time to get one shot. Pay no attention to the EXIF, it is a faulty reading.
Think the ISO might have been to high. Anyway gas at this pump out here in rural Thailand is just under $6 USD a gallon. The Gas Bandit was handed 100Baht which equates to $3USD + or - .
So the reason I say this went down real fast is because that little amount of fuel was in the tank in the blink of an eye. Never had a chance to set anything on the camera. Just draw and shoot ..;-0~
It is real hot out, like real hot !! 38-39C, no breeze and the humidity is going straight up. Big storms coming in from up North, China !
With the world oil crises, rising prices jumping up like the humidity around here, thought this image would give you a small chuckle ..;-)
