Blue Skies over the Rivers of America

This shot of the Rivers of America is one of those classic shots that nearly everyone has. It's a really easy shot and everyone passes by and tends to get this shot. What I really liked about this result was just how blue the sky was and the clouds add a nice dynamic to the scene. I think the red of Harper's Mill contrasts really well against the deeper blues in the shot. Having the Liberty Belle docked really helps balance and finish off the shot.

This was shot with the Nikon D810 and Sigma 24 1.4 ART. I rented the Sigma for this most recent trip and I really love the 24mm focal length for walking around Disney. Thus I kept it on my camera a lot during the day to give it a thorough work out and rarely felt I needed to swap it out just walking around. Editing on this shot was very simple. I applied a levels adjustment along with Nik Color Efex Pro Contrast followed by a very small color balance adjustment and bump in the saturation. I added a light Orton Effect in the sky and water and then sharpened for my final result.

The Mark Twain from Pirate Point

December 2, 2015

The Mark Twain begins its first voyage of the day, rounding Pirate Point and Lafitte’s Tavern on Tom Sawyers Island.

Soon we’ll have to wait more than a year, until early May 2017 to see this sight again.

The rains had just stopped and my wife Diane, WJ McIntosh and I bolted from our seats in Plaza Inn towards the Rivers of America. We were hoping to catch one of Bill's pateneted sunset shots. After photographing the rainbow that appeared, I decided to accept the dreary sky and see if I could showcase the subtle beauty and soft light it provides.

I stacked a .06 and a .09 ND filter with an aperture of F/22 to eliminate the ducks swimming by and make the water as glassy as possible.

The Sailing Ship Columbia makes its transformation into Captain Hooks Ship for the battle with Peter Pan in the dramatic scene from Fantasmic.

We spied this unusual view of the Columbia docked on Tom Sawyer Island as it loaded up for the show.

A special thanks goes to WJMcIntosh for showing Gregg and Justin Cooper, Ryan Pastorino, my lovely wife Diane and myself this unique and really cool spot for photographing Fantasmic.

3 exposure HDR image processed in Photomatix, then merged with the +/-0 image in Photoshop Elements, then layer masked with the -2 image to control the bright spots.

I took this picture about 2am New Year's Day 2009. It was so incredibly foggy, that it was difficult to see much more than the brilliant lights on the Mark Twain.

Make sure to view it large.

A little different perspective here on the Mark Twain Riverboat. We were boarded on the Sailing Ship Columbia making our way around the Rivers of America when I got wind of the steamboat on our tail.

Hooray phirework phriday! This is the only firework shot I've ever taken! I rather like how it came out. I'd like to once again thank c-lemon for this shot's existence as she's the one who convinced me to take a crack at the fireworks!

Since I've been apart from Disneyland Resort for almost 6 months now, I'm missing a lot of things, hard. Indiana Jones, Fantasy Faire, World of Color, California Screamin, Carsland Neon, the list goes on. But I think the thing I miss most about Disneyland is Fantasmic!. This is because the DLR version of Fantasmic is infinitely better than the WDW version. I've seen the WDW version of Fantasmic twice here, and it was basically laughable in comparison. I'm anxiously awaiting the day I can photograph this show again in January. Until then, I'll be listening to the soundtrack often.

Happy Fireworks Friday!

Suzy - one of Cinderella's Mice

I'm not sure if it was because I was scared I was never going back, or because my tripod was yet to break. But, I took some of the best photos of my life on this brief trip to Walt's original Kingdom.

Rivers of America

I can't get enough of photographing the Mark Twain! Absolutely one of my most favorite things in all of Disneyland. Here's one capture of the Mark Twain taken with my 70-200 lens. Shooting with a longer lens always seems to add a different perspective to the shot.

10:45 Show, Rivers of America, Disneyland, December 4, 2015

So this is my first Fireworks Friday post, I don't think I could do one every week like a Monorail Monday but it's the first time that I've had a shot worthy of being posted on Friday. I tried many different crops on this shot because I had difficulty getting rid of dead space and trying to make the shot seem interesting, ultimately the fireworks reflections had to go even though I really liked the way they looked...

This is a fusion of 4 total images, I used CS5 and some Nik software.

Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think, comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! :)

I really love this area of the park and find I spend a lot of time here in the morning. I have always enjoyed Tom Sawyers Island and a nice ride on the Liberty Belle, especially when we would go in the summer and it was always crowded everywhere else.

Have a great day!

This has become one of my favorite areas to photograph a sunset at the Magic Kingdom. I have lucked out with some good shots that included the Liberty Belle but really enjoy the empty Rivers of America in this shot with Splash Mountain centered at the end.

Have a great day!

I don't mind overcast and clouds this time of year, in fact, often I look forward to the moody and textured skies. Here Columbia sits at rest on Rivers of America under gloomy skies, waiting for the morning when she will once again set sail at Disneyland.

The Liberty Square Riverboat Landing along the Rivers of America in the Magic Kingdom.

The original riverboat, an authentic sternwheeler steamboat called the Admiral Joe Fowler, was built in dry dock at Walt Disney World and set afloat when the attraction opened on May 20, 1973. The Richard F. Irvine was later added as a second boat. After its extensive rehab in the '90s, the boat was renamed the Liberty Belle in 1996.

In 1980, the Admiral Joe Fowler was sent to dry dock maintenance and never returned.

Admiral Joe Fowler was in charge of construction at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Dick Irvine worked as an art director at Disney in the 1940s and was an early executive of WED Enterprises. His projects included planning and design for the theme parks and the World's Fair projects.

This was a shot I never intended to process. Last night I was looking for a photo to use next week on my processing column on Disney Photography Blog. I decided to see what I could recover from this shot and was surprised at the detail I pulled back in Lightroom. You can see the original shot below and the article outlining all the steps I took will be up next week on the blog.

For Sale

I ended up buying the Olympus OM-D mirrorless camera and am selling my Nikon gear. If anyone is interested in purchasing a Nikon D90, Sigma 10-20mm, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 (my favorite lens!) or a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 - send me a message. All are in perfect condition and come with all the original packaging and boxes.

I have been trying to improve on my night shots. Up until recently I haven't taken very many. They always come out looking like the day or just don't come out period. It was Big Thunder Mountain's Peak all lit up in the distance that caught my eye, The Mark Twain Riverboat just skidded to a stop to be in the picture.

I shot this with Jeff Krause when I was in the parks last week. It was a shot I had almost forgotten about because I have been processing my Halloween party photos the last few days. Jeff posted his version yesterday and I decided last night to process mine. You can see by looking at Jeff's photo how two people can take pretty much the same shot but make them look unique.

This was a handheld three shot HDR, processed in Photomatix, Lightroom and a little bit in Photoshop.

10:45 Show, Rivers of America, Disneyland, November 11, 2015

The Rivers of America is back at Disneyland and its Native American inhabitants have all returned to a wonderful new riverside.

Shots from the Rivers of America section of the park can prove to be a little bit difficult. It is pretty dark back there so you need a long exposure to get the details in the shadows. But then there's bright artificial light, like the ones seen here on the Liberty Belle, which get blown out. So this is one of the many situations for night time Disney World photography that bracketing comes into play. Through the magic of computer software, you combine multiple shots of different exposure times to get the best of both worlds. The result is something like this which is far more realistic looking and detailed. All that being said, I've never ridden on the Liberty Belle or been to Tom Sayer island! Gotta put those on the list for the next trip...

EXPLORE! #489 on 6/15/13

A few weeks ago, I rented a Nikorr 70-200mm f/2.8 with the sole purpose of photographing Fantasmic! at Disneyland. I ended up adoring the lens, and was heartbroken when it came time for me to return it.

Anyway, here's one of my favorite shots I got with that lens of Snow White and her Prince. The Princess/Prince section is arguably my favorite part of Fantasmic!, although I love the entire show to pieces. And I really do adore when the Mark Twain comes out at the end. I just love Fantasmic! a lot.

Fantasmic! at Disneyland is perfect. I'm happy I have a camera that can now photograph it really cleanly.

I was with my family at Disneyland the other day watching my youngest son march with his High School Band down Main Street USA...The kids were invited to march and play as a warm-up to the "A Christmas Fantasy" parade, and has become a annual tradition for our school.

Disneyland was under limited hours this particular evening, closing at 8PM, so we were rushed in finding a spot to view the fireworks after riding Pirates. I knew the Rivers of America would be a interesting spot so we headed there...

It is always fun to run into fellow photographers at Disneyland, especially when it is unplanned. But I was NOT prepared to see my buddy Sam (Disney Resort) parked next to the River with a tripod and camera aimed at the sky. In fact, I looked over at him and didn't recognize him because he was so out of context with a tripod. I nodded to him, in a friendly gesture as I set up my tripod and was surprised to hear him say, "Oh, hi Gregg!"

I looked again, and realized it was Sam! Sam is a master at finishing his images with a special touch of Disney magic, and wonderful humor. I had never seen him with a tripod before and was very happy when I realized who it was. After the fireworks, we were treated to more Disney magic as snow fell around New Orleans Square...

It has been a while since I have shot fireworks at Disneyland, and this time I used a ND filter for the first time...not too happy with my success rate this time out, but it is a learning curve. Particularly frustrating at Disneyland is the very precise placement of the main show bursts, which go off in EXACTLY the same spot, making long exposure ND shots kind of muddled, You really need to know the show and time your shots well. Keeping with the "Believe...In Holiday Magic" fireworks theme, I chose a "Christmas colored" burst for this scene. Unusually, Columbia was berthed in Mark Twain's usual spot, which made for a different look on the River front..

Sam's photo can be seen here:

Also, I would like to point you to my buddy WJMcIntosh's photostream where he has posted a shot of his first magazine cover, and a article he wrote highlighting his adventures with photographing Disneyland FIreworks! Way to go Bill!

Have a great weekend everyone!

A view of the Christmas Fireworks as seen from the Rivers of America. This was taken on the Mice Chat Photo Meet. Unfortunately, they killed the lights on the Mark Twain and dock when the fireworks started. This is a composite of the Mark Twain before the lights went out and a shot of the fireworks blended together.

Happy Fantasmic! Friday!

One thing I don't think I've ever talked about is how much I dislike the update of the jets in Fantasmic! When the show was down for refurb during January, they put in these thinner water jets that just aren't very pretty. One of my favorite things about photographing Disneyland's Fantasmic! was the performers PLUS the thick streams of color that were behind them. Those kind of pictures are just impossible to get now, and that makes me very upset.

Unless you go to Fantasmic! in DHS...

Anyone been to Fowler's Inn before and spent the night? I hope not - it's a kitchen! Some guests don't realize this, but the dock there was built in such a way to allow for both the Mark Twain and the Columbia to sit in it when it's fully drained! It's a dry dock!

So, has anyone taken the time to check out the EXIF info? I got a new toy! And I can't wait to show everyone what I can do with it!
