Like film noir, James Dean, 50's cool, riding knackered old Harleys, walking through wet streets in a rain coat, burlesque, retro clothing, Buicks, Porsche 550 Spyders and lots of smoking cigarettes...

Big thing these days, seen particularly often as a photographer, either through imitation or the desire to imitate, this idea of trying to play with the stuff from days gone by and add a new twist on things. And the thing is, you know some people try to achieve it, some people have it, some don't. Me? I'm about as cool as a five-bar heater in a sauna. In hell. In summer. But these guys?

These guys man, they just sit there, let me pick up the camera, and they just do it. They're just Very. Fucking. Cool.

One of the few occasions recently where I've struggled with a shoot. OK, I was ill at the time, but nevertheless, I struggled. I can see into people with a camera, I know how to use it, to look at people and show truths. But here with Eva and Logan, at home, on their turf, together (they're an awesome couple!) just being themselves, they threw these stylised looks and things at the camera, and the difficulty wasn't capturing them, but doing them justice.

I think, I might have just possibly scratched the surface. I'm happy with that for now...

(Strobist/flash info stuff: 2x 580 EXII's fired via Cybersyncs. One camera left above slightly and behind Eva, the other in front fired into Orbis ringlight.)

Totally blown out. I love how the eyes look with this thing.

Today's Macro Monday theme is "Abstract Macro" and so I took a quick macro of my little Pimoroni loot box that I use to take electronics to and from the office to help protect them in my bag.

HMM!

One of the boards I prepared for making boxes. My tree, but I didn't cut it down. I did everything else: milled the boards from the logs, resawed to thickness, planed, and cut the box joints.

Messing with the ring light again while breaking from editing.

Today's Macro Monday theme is 'Made of Metal' and had I got my head screwed on I could have got some great well thought out shots from the machine workshop....

Instead I didn't even think about my photograph of the day until I got home.

I spend quite a bit of time everyday on the train and walking to and from stations so I spend most of it listening to audiobooks now rather than music.

These are my favourite headphones and whilst they're not cheap they are very comfortable, sound beautiful and the parts can all be replaced individually if they get damaged.

They're full of dings and scrapes now, but the stainless steel they're milled from means they just look full of character.

So here we go then. I'm a bit nervous about posting this. I know in my own head which angle I came at this from, but I'm not sure it will translate.

A while ago now, a Flickr contact posted two photos that totally blew me away. Step forward Eliska AKA Onion Patch, with her photo Blood Thirsty. Now as you click that link, you'll immediately see the obvious parallels, and that's kinda what I'm nervous about. I'm not a fan of plagiarism, so am nervous about the idea that this image can be seen as that. I see it (genuinely) as having used Eliska's work as an inspiration. I dunno if there's much scope these days for genuinely unique work, we must all be at the point where what we shoot is influenced by something else.

(That said, I prefer to remain blissfully ignorant to the idea that Eliska may have stolen the idea from somewhere else, and prefer to give her full credit for being a visual genius!)

I also wanted to add an element of one my own earlier photos as seen here. In my mind there I'm proud of the concept and realisation, but knew there could be more drama.

So I tried to blend the lot together, and throw in some funky lights too, because at the moment, it's any excuse to practise with that Orbis ringlight thing!

So as we got ready for this photo, both Sarah (the model) and Kate (the MUA) had been briefed weeks in advance about what I was after with this. And yet, if I'm being honest, words can't do it justice. This is simply because Kate made this shot her own. I didn't even try and control her input here, she's got more talent in my little finger than I've got in my entire body. I just sat there and watched her do her thing, Sarah trying to stifle the giggles as she did so. And she just cooked ideas, and colour schemes and methods straight out of fresh air, right before my eyes. Kate Holloway, you're a genius. (It makes it even more so when you realise Kate knows how to wield a camera and is a Photoshop whizz on the quiet.)

So come on, let me know what you think? Seriously.

I feel there's an imprtance to looking back at your stuff and seeing what worked, and not being afraid to move it on a bit. Hopefully, hopefully I did this. Maybe. Eeek! Getting all nervous again! :-(

(Strobist/flashy stuff info: One 580 EXII fired into Orbis ringlight adapter in front of model, approx 1 mtr to subject, and set at about 1/2 power on full zoom. Second 580 EXII directly behind model fired on wide 14mm spread at white wall at full power. Both triggered via Cybersyncs.

Inspired by the work of Photophool and his CCRRFD (now on version 2!), I made my own version with a large muffin case. It worked well seeing as it's just a thin bit of paper with a few folds in it.

Note: this look cannot be easily achieved by simply using the onboard flash and a fast shutter speed. The CCRRFD reduces lens shadow and evenly lights macros, producing highlights that are very different to un-diffused flash.

I'm never going to be able to achieve the wonderful bubbly results like this by the Phool because my taps are lacking the necessary aerator.

Happy New Year!

played around with back lighting the flakes (on a piece of glass). I used a ring light/flash, for some fill light. I have become addicted to shooting snow flakes. I am still looking for the perfect flake.

Using old tech for shooting water drops with a ring light attached to the front of the lens. Something different from the snow of the past few days. Even though the "Selectavision" type disc is black like a vinyl record lp at first glance, it will reflect colours like a CD, or DVD does. Sometimes you get some strikingly different results as in these 2 examples.

Tepa Putul

Tepa Putul or indigenous clay dolls have their origins in the images of deities, made by potters. They are shaped by hand, dried in the sun and fired in kilns. Originally, there were never painted.

Tepa Putul were not made for sale. These dolls were generally gift items or for sacrifice. At some point, artisans faced financial crises and began looking for alternative means of earning money. Thus they started selling these dolls. Now the dolls are painted in yellow, red, green and black. (The Daily Star)

I’ve heard a lot of criticism aimed at Photoshop on the basis that it manipulates the image and is therefore not a ‘real’ photographic product.

Yet manipulating a medium to create something original is the very basis of art. Artists have always manipulated their materials using a wide variety of creative tools to express something that interprets their subject.

In photography’s case, we make creative decisions at every step.

The lens we chose decides our focal length, depth of field and degree of sharpness. When we place a filter on our lens, we are manipulating the end product. Likewise, the format we shoot in decides the bit depth and, by extension, the dynamic range of our photo.

When we download images from camera to computer, the digital information is interpolated - ie. a mathematical algorithm reconfigures the information into another form. If we re-size or print an image, another algorithm maps out a new set of values to produce the desired result.

Even without using an editing program like Photoshop, we are making creative decisions that manipulate our final result.
