This area gets 20- to 30-foot tides each day and, for half of the day, the water is so high that the sea level is above the river level, causing the water to flow inland. The other half of the day, the opposite is the case. While the water flows, turbulence-causing boulders and terrain make the narrow passage impossible for boats to traverse. Only during the two slack tides each day can boats pass. These slack tides only last for 20-30 minutes. The passage, though, is really good for fishing, so fishermen will often come in during one slack tide, pull their boat up on the rocks, fish all day (effectively "stuck" in their location for the duration), then leave during the next slack tide.

In my backyard... It's amazing what we can do on a sunny evening! :)

Sept 22/00 - Probably the house where mom grew up. (not positive, but one like it) in Memrik. 2 of 2.

This is a photograph from the 5th annual running of the Meath Spring Half Marathon and 10KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were promoted and hosted by Bohermeen Athletic Club at Bohermeen, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 13th of March 2016 at 12:00. The half marathon consists of a 11KM and 10KM repeated loop around the roads of Bohermeen and Oristown. The course is a fast fair course with a few small hills. This year the course was 'reversed' which just meant that the traditional course changed to accomodate the large number of participants and the narrow country roads on which both the race participants and race traffic must both share before, during and after the race. Most runners agreed that this made the course much faster as a result. There was almost a total of 1,000 participants in both races.

The other great variable in road racing - the weather - was at its spectacular best. It was as close to perfect running conditions. Little or no breeze, around 10C temperature and clear conditions.

Bohermeen AC is steeped in Irish athletics history since 1927 and it is this experience and exceptional community spirit and volunteering which has made this event today so successful. Having now organised the event for five years running it is certain that the event will continue to grow and expand become one of the mainstays on the Irish athletic club road racing calendar for many years to come.

The race is supported by substantial local sponsorship from businesses in the local area.

Timing and event management was provided by http://www.myrunresults.com/. Their website is here [www.myrunresults.com/] and will contain the results to today's race.

We have photographs from both the start and the finish of the races today - they are all available on Flickr [https://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157665850980555]. Some photographs of the 10KM are included.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

The amazing phenomenon of the Reversing Falls Rapids is a sight to behold. We were there just in time to watch the Bay of Fundy’s monstrously high tide reverse the flow of the mighty Saint John River; Witnessing on the waves and whirlpools that result from nature’s tug-of-war, at Fallsview and Wolastoq parks.

reverse community service "do the time before the crime", so this run down old shop was a bit of a eyesore so i took it opon myself to brighten it up in some sort of vigilante urban decorator fashion, this is phase one of my twisted little plan.

A record shot of my camera with the 18-55 kit lens 'reversed' on the mount - basically, a small metal ring, with a lens mount on one side (which attaches to the camera, just like a lens would) and a standard filter thread on the other end, onto which you attach a lens. The reason for this ridiculous looking setup is that when using a lens backwards, it focusses VERY close (look at this pic that I took with this setup).

It does mean that your camera loses all communication with the lens, so focus, metering etc is all completely manual. And this is doubly tricky on this Nikon kit lens, as there's no aperture ring, so I have to manually move the aperture lever with my finger to guess at the aperture I need! (Typically, wide open to focus, completely closed to shoot as DoF is so small)

Strobist: Interesting one this! I was shooting in a relatively dim room, so needed flash. My pocket camera (Casio Exilim Z750) has an on camera flash, but this was giving horrid shadows... So I got out an optically slaved flash - which fired, but it fired on the pre-flash from the Casio, so didn't contribute to the exposure. The way I took this shot was to shoot in manual with a relatively long shutter, and manually trigger the off camera flash with the test button as soon as I saw the camera flash trigger! Sophisticated off camera trigger? I think so! ;-) (Off camera flash was to camera left to light the front of the D50...)

I've never seen one with these colors. Iridescent blue wings, three (what look like) jewels on its head, and it looked like it was brushed with fine gold powder. Really beautiful for being so alien. It's amazing to look at its old ugly brown skin that it's hanging on and think of the transformation. I wish I had spent some time clearing out the background, it's a bit cluttered. Next time...

Macro lenses cost an arm and a leg. Given. Yet, by just flipping around any standard lens (such as the kit 18-55mm used here) you can take astonishing pictures from distances less than 2cm away. WOW!

At first I was having a heart attack. Its not so normal to hold a lens detached from a body, but if you have patience, it works well. My next purchase might be a "reverse lens filter" so I can attach the lens on the body. I'll keep you posted.

It's a lot of fun, and you should really try it out!
