This pic was flipped so the reflection is at the top and the actual trees are below. I took the photo with the intent of reversing it because the lake was so peaceful it resembled a pane of glass.

This area gets 20- to 30-foot tides each day and, for half of the day, the water is so high that the sea level is above the river level, causing the water to flow inland. The other half of the day, the opposite is the case. While the water flows, turbulence-causing boulders and terrain make the narrow passage impossible for boats to traverse. Only during the two slack tides each day can boats pass. These slack tides only last for 20-30 minutes. The passage, though, is really good for fishing, so fishermen will often come in during one slack tide, pull their boat up on the rocks, fish all day (effectively "stuck" in their location for the duration), then leave during the next slack tide.

I've always been fascinated with these things. Finally decided to get a shot of them.

The Promise of Data: Will this Bring a Revolution in Health Care?

It has now become an orthodoxy that we are moving into the age of 'Big Data'. This derives from ever increasing processing power and the vast surge in connectedness - with mobile technologies at the forefront and sensors in nearly all appliances, we are set to have 50 billion devices by 2020 connected in the cloud. It is argued that medical decisions can be truly evidence based, combining the most complete medical science with personal data, drawing where appropriate on 24/7 monitoring through mobile devices and patient reported outcome measures. Lifestyle advice and preventive action can be honed with ever greater accuracy. Benefits from treatment, its best timing, lowest cost, better understood risk, and more predictable side-effects should all flow from this data transition, bringing lower costs and higher value.

Corporations are competing in both investment and rhetoric. In 2013 Google launched a new subsidiary, Calico, which Larry Page claimed would represent 'moonshot thinking around health care', and there have been many similar claims. But how is all this justified? And how can we ensure that those advances which do arise from this new control of data truly benefit patients, rather than just the provider - and that this will be a benefit distributed across the social gradient and globally?

What are the risks on the horizon? Data is often siloed and used for competitive advantage. Protocols around privacy could be tested to destruction; for instance, it is possible to reverse engineer anonymized data to identify individuals. Forbes magazine even reports a case of medical data being sold on eBay. How might these risks be best mitigated?

This session will review the claims for Big Data and its true potential, and seek to identify the conditions under which it should yield the greatest benefits to patients and populations.

My Most favorite water.

Most people don't realize how important their ph is. The inside of your body should be slightly alkaline. Cancer cannot survive in a slightly alakaline eviroment. Most diseases are caused by stress. Stress creates an acidic enviroment. So eat your vegetables as they contain minerals that nuetralize your ph. And drink essestia water. Not trying to sound like a commercial. i just really believe in this.

All cards (other than this one) with a picture of an animal (or animals) on it have their pt. values cut in 1/2. (pt. value = the number written on it that someone earns or loses).

I've never seen one with these colors. Iridescent blue wings, three (what look like) jewels on its head, and it looked like it was brushed with fine gold powder. Really beautiful for being so alien. It's amazing to look at its old ugly brown skin that it's hanging on and think of the transformation. I wish I had spent some time clearing out the background, it's a bit cluttered. Next time...

Macro lenses cost an arm and a leg. Given. Yet, by just flipping around any standard lens (such as the kit 18-55mm used here) you can take astonishing pictures from distances less than 2cm away. WOW!

At first I was having a heart attack. Its not so normal to hold a lens detached from a body, but if you have patience, it works well. My next purchase might be a "reverse lens filter" so I can attach the lens on the body. I'll keep you posted.

It's a lot of fun, and you should really try it out!
