These are the cat toys for which my job is to “hide” them, so she can retrieve them when she wants. These were “hidden” in some of the less usual (but still not hard to find) places in the house: on top of filing cabinets in office and one on the “she doesn’t use it” cat bed on a little cabinet in the bedroom. They’ve been laying there at least a week.
I was out of the house for six hours this morning and found them in the front room. Now she wants out - guess I’ll let her out and “hide” them again. (done!) (hm maybe she is humoring ME so I don’t leave for “so long”?)By the way these toys are some of the PURRfect (tm) line of cat toys and are quite durable. "Old Yellow" used to have many more feathers, perhaps I should see what is now in stock for replacement. The twisted wire is part of the only toys she has played retrieval with (one such toy is now demised... she is after all quite the aged lady) so it must be a key part of the entertainment.
After several years of observing this adult female Pergrine Falcon and just 20 minutes prior to capturing this image, I was totally enthralled as I watched her knock this Willet out of the sky with her intelligence, speed, power and coordination. The Willet fell into the ocean 100m offshore from my observation post. It was obviously stunned but still alive and unable to take flight from the surf. I immediately started to record time intervals with the camera to supplement my written documentation of the Peregrine Falcon's dives, and relentless pursuit of her downed prey.
Being completely in the moment through my binoculars and camera made my heart race. I was watching something that not many people get to see, and yet over the years, I had seen this magnificent Peregrine refine her over-the-ocean prey capture technique.
On this day the surf was very big but it did not deter Her. She dove down continuously trying to retrieve the Willet. She made at least 30 attempts in between the sets of large waves, each time the Willet was able to duck under the surface of the ocean. Finally, she tired and flew to the bluff overlooking the beach and took a rest. I watched as she focused her gaze on the incoming waves and caught her breath. Then, in a flash, she launched with great purpose and intent over my shoulder to the surf line. Immediately I turned and saw the Willet, heads-up in about 4 inches of water. The surf had done its job and brought it to shore. Now, screaming on dry sand, the Willet was no longer able to duck the retrieval efforts of the Falcon. I captured this image just after she snatched her prize off the sand.

St. Julian's (Maltese: San Ġiljan) is a town in Malta situated along the coast, north of the country's capital, Valletta. It is known for tourism-oriented businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and nightclubs which are centred mainly in an area known as Paceville.
The town is subdivided into informal districts which are Paceville, Ta' Ġiorni, Tal-Għoqod, St Andrew's, as well as the regions surrounding St George's Bay, Spinola Bay, Balluta Bay, and Il-Qaliet cliffs.
St Julian's is a popular town, usually flowing with tourists, especially during the summer months. It is also a well-sought after destination by the Maltese.
The population of Saint Julian's is 10,261 people.
The town has only one skyscraper, the 98m tall Portomaso Tower.
The town is named after its patron saint; Saint Julian who is widely known as Julian the Hospitaller and Julian the Poor whereby he is the patron Saint of hunters. The town's flag is identical to the Belgian flag which has to do with the fact that it is thought that St Julian was Belgian (from Ath), despite the fact that it is disputed whether he was also from France (Le Mans) or Italy (Naples).
Before the reform to the Calendar of Saints, the memorial to St Julian was on January 27. Nowadays, the is celebrated on February 12, though in Malta an additional feast, in the spirit of the many summer feasts around the island, is celebrated on the last Sunday of August.

This photo was taken earlier this spring while my wife and I were on an ocean cruise. This is one of the "Barbary Apes" that freely roam the upper levels of the nature preserve on the Rock of Gibraltar. Obviously the rain was a factor because these usually aggressive animals were having no part of me. All he was looking for was some place to dry off. Smart ape!

Woof woof woof.
Barney doing his ritual running up and down and barking act, to psyche himself up before jumping into the lake. He loves water, loves swimming, loves jumping in, loves retrieving toys from water (in fact retrieval out of water is pretty much the only kind of retrieval he'll do outside of our home - because he loves it sooo much). I can't keep him out of the stuff - even in freezing cold weather, Barn wants to swim and yet every single time, he feels the need to work himself up into a shrieking frenzy before taking the plunge. It's like he's giving himself a pep talk! Sometimes he does it just once before going in the first time, other days he'll run up and down and woof-shriek each time he prepares to retrieve a toy. Today we had the ritual each time and I was very glad no-one else was around as Barney has a loud bark and the echoes at this lake are impressive!
I had a really fun but tiring day out with friends out at the local Three Counties Autumn Show yesterday, so hadn't exactly planned to go for a walk up the hills today but the weather was beautiful and it seemed wrong to waste the afternoon, so I staggered up there :) At first I thought I'd made a mistake as Barney started getting stressed after hearing bangs from gunshots (poss from gun-dog demos at the show) and a few loud motorbikes going by on roads lower down the hills. Luckily though, I had the long line with me and once he was on that, Barney calmed right down and had lots of fun exploring (albeit at a more sedate pace than normal as he was attached to a human!). Once we got to the lake, our last stop-off point before home, I let him free again as nothing much ever bothers him when he's playing in or near water. It is most definitely Barney's "happy place"... He had a good bark and a good swim and forgot about any "scary" bangs :) Fun walk!
Hope everyone has had a great weekend!
.. once you got the stick to shore and up the bank, it wanted to go back in the water!! (Which it did several times necessitating retrieval several times, indeed more than several times until I took pity!)
