Mille Miglia, 15. Mai 2009, SR 258 Via Alpe,
zwischen Viamaggio und Sansepolcro, Toscana (IT).
Ich fotografierte an einer tollen, bereits am Vortag ausgesuchten Stelle am Ende einer langen Bergab-Geraden, direkt vor einer scharfen Haarnadelkurve. Plötztlich, wie ein Blitz aus heiterem Himmel, war besonders lauter Motorenlärm zu hören. Gleichzeitig kamen DC im Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR (mehr als 10 Millionen EUR Versicherungswert!), Stirling Moss' Original-Siegerauto, und knapp dahinter Mika Häkkinen mit dem brandneuem, am Vortag erstmals in Brescia präsentierten Mercedes McLaren SLR Edition Stirling Moss mit hohem Renntempo auf der Geraden daher gerast. Das Foto zeigt den konzentrierten DC beim starken Abbremsen vor der Haarnadelkurve. Ich drückte reflexartig den Auslöser und schon waren die beiden ultra raren Super-Autos auch schon wieder hinter der anschließenden Kurve in Richtung Sansepolcro verschwunden. Der ganze Spuck dauerte nur wenige Sekunden. Mir erschien es wie ein Angriff zweier tieffliegender Kampfjets... Ein wirklich beeindruckendes und unvergessliches Erlebnis.

Woof woof woof.
Barney doing his ritual running up and down and barking act, to psyche himself up before jumping into the lake. He loves water, loves swimming, loves jumping in, loves retrieving toys from water (in fact retrieval out of water is pretty much the only kind of retrieval he'll do outside of our home - because he loves it sooo much). I can't keep him out of the stuff - even in freezing cold weather, Barn wants to swim and yet every single time, he feels the need to work himself up into a shrieking frenzy before taking the plunge. It's like he's giving himself a pep talk! Sometimes he does it just once before going in the first time, other days he'll run up and down and woof-shriek each time he prepares to retrieve a toy. Today we had the ritual each time and I was very glad no-one else was around as Barney has a loud bark and the echoes at this lake are impressive!
I had a really fun but tiring day out with friends out at the local Three Counties Autumn Show yesterday, so hadn't exactly planned to go for a walk up the hills today but the weather was beautiful and it seemed wrong to waste the afternoon, so I staggered up there :) At first I thought I'd made a mistake as Barney started getting stressed after hearing bangs from gunshots (poss from gun-dog demos at the show) and a few loud motorbikes going by on roads lower down the hills. Luckily though, I had the long line with me and once he was on that, Barney calmed right down and had lots of fun exploring (albeit at a more sedate pace than normal as he was attached to a human!). Once we got to the lake, our last stop-off point before home, I let him free again as nothing much ever bothers him when he's playing in or near water. It is most definitely Barney's "happy place"... He had a good bark and a good swim and forgot about any "scary" bangs :) Fun walk!

St. Julian's (Maltese: San Ġiljan) is a town in Malta situated along the coast, north of the country's capital, Valletta. It is known for tourism-oriented businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and nightclubs which are centred mainly in an area known as Paceville.
The town is subdivided into informal districts which are Paceville, Ta' Ġiorni, Tal-Għoqod, St Andrew's, as well as the regions surrounding St George's Bay, Spinola Bay, Balluta Bay, and Il-Qaliet cliffs.
St Julian's is a popular town, usually flowing with tourists, especially during the summer months. It is also a well-sought after destination by the Maltese.
The population of Saint Julian's is 10,261 people.
The town has only one skyscraper, the 98m tall Portomaso Tower.
The town is named after its patron saint; Saint Julian who is widely known as Julian the Hospitaller and Julian the Poor whereby he is the patron Saint of hunters. The town's flag is identical to the Belgian flag which has to do with the fact that it is thought that St Julian was Belgian (from Ath), despite the fact that it is disputed whether he was also from France (Le Mans) or Italy (Naples).
Before the reform to the Calendar of Saints, the memorial to St Julian was on January 27. Nowadays, the is celebrated on February 12, though in Malta an additional feast, in the spirit of the many summer feasts around the island, is celebrated on the last Sunday of August.

This includes almost 100,000 eBooks, 50,000 eJournals, and almost a quarter of a million books.
Library Retrieval System
UTS Library is only the 2nd library in Australia to feature a robotic library retrieval system (LRS).
Six robotic cranes handle the task of managing the 325,000 books stored in 12,000 galvanised steel bins.
The $28.5 million high-tech LRS is located in a bunker underneath the UTS Library.
The robots use frequency tags to identify books.
Abby will eagerly run to get the frisbee and even tries to catch it in the air, but as of yet she is more interested in taking it to our other puppy for tug of war than bringing it back to me. Oh well, as long as they're having fun and getting exercise.
Taken at the San Diego Wild Animal Safari Park on October 16. This young lady (rhino) was making her debut. She had been born three days before at the park. I caught her nursing, which is what any self respecting three day old rhino would be doing. Neither mom or her calf seemed to mind that there were a truckful of human beings nearby.

66131 has just passed over the foot crossing at Brookhouse on the South Yorkshire Joint driven by good friend and fellow flickerite DBS 60100 on route to Worksop for the retrieval of the last rake of HTA's , ending the areas association with coal and rail with just one HTA left to be cut up on site . It was a grim day in more ways than one .

42101 passes through Carlton with Tangara cars N5211 and D6211, belonging to set T42 which was involved in a collision with a car at Kembla Grange last week.
The two lead cars were road hauled away last week, however these last two cars pictured here were stabled at Unanderra until today where they were retrieved by 42101, running as train number 9118..

Haven't had any time to Post process, noise reduction, detail retrieval masking etc...the last which I'm usually 2 lazy 2 do anyways.
After mercenaries abducted the young daughter of a tech companies CEO for ransom, unaware that the company in question is actually a subsidiary of the AKU Partnership, an AKU Tactical Retrieval team was deployed to the abandoned gas station where the mercs where hiding out in order to return the girl.
Even if the financial costs of such an operation are not insignificant, sometimes in business one has to make a point.

A Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU)-clad astronaut is depicted working on the space shuttle-berthed Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite, aka “Solar Max”, while another, also wearing his MMU, photographically documents the activity from ‘above’.
Although the MMU was used during this particular mission, STS-41C, it was only during the failed initial attempt to grapple the satellite. Other than some other brief testing (I believe) of it/them during the mission, they were not otherwise operationally employed.
In November 1984, on STS-51A, the MMUs were used in a manner more similar to this artist’s concept. During the mission, Astronauts Joseph P. Allen & Dale Gardner used them, with other specialized equipment, to retrieve two wayward communication satellites, Westar VI and Palapa B2. The mission was to be the last time the MMUs flew.
Although no signature is visible, based on the MMU-centric nature of the work & it depicting SolarMax retrieval/repair, I think this beautiful work is by Martin Marietta’s immensely talented artist, Charles O. Bennett.
