There was certainly a good variety of vehicles running through Basingstoke on rail replacement duties today (Good Friday 2023). The sun made an appearance which was good to see as well!

The regular vehicle windows... I never knew you could put glass behind them haha... how silly is that...

A line side fire on the Ffestiniog Railway meant a replacement bus was found, Not quite what I was expecting to be used with RMC1490 taking us from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog (1/5/17)

Then into the dumpster go the remains.

LX23BJK is seen making an appearance on Greater Anglia rail replacement from Bishops Stortford at Broxbourne Station. New to Kowloon Motor Bus company (KMB) in Hong Kong as a demonstrator in November 2018. However, due to various issues with safety inspections, it didn't enter service until September 2019. The month after, it was withdrawn the month after. Before leaving Hong Kong, it did road testing in early 2020. During 2021, it then moved to the UK with Ensign Bus. In 2023, it entered service after being refurbished and has been strictly used on the Z2 and rail replacement.

City Circle provided several Scania Irizar coaches for today's rail replacement job between Three Bridges and Brighton. K410 I6s YN18 SVL carries CIE Tours livery. Sadly, with the advent of the new PSVAR for rail replacement services, luxury coaches like this will become rarer on such work although the Kings Ferry did have a number of quality coaches on today's job.

DLE11 (SN60EBM) is an example of 25 heaps. (DLE26 is not a heap). It is seen on the rail replacement service, on loan to United Motorcoaches, at West Ruislip. The bus never went above 40mph.

It was good to see the Mayflower pair back on the road again after the devastating vandal attack that crippled the fleet back in November 2025.

In total, 36 buses and coaches from 20 different operators passed our cameras in our 3 hour visit with Aldermaston Coach Lines and Barnes providing 5 each.

It was back to Basingstoke today (12/01/2025) for another look at the rail replacement operation with an impressive 13 departures an hour. A bit of a Barnes-fest certainly added brightness to an otherwise grey day.

Well, the long anticipated "Woking Weekender" finally arrived and delivered a magnificent array of vehicles operating rail replacement services out to Weybridge, Guildford, Aldershot and Basingstoke throughout both days. No less than 34 different operators provided in excess of 70 buses, coaches and minibuses across both days including three 75-plates. And Burrows Coaches had "both" their East Lancs Darts out - EDIT - STOP PRESS! On Saturday it was LK55ADX and on Sunday it was J8UFX - first with the news!!

Now then, Woking is not the photographer's friend at this time of year due to high-rise office blocks surrounding the station area. Saturday started wet, eased off but remained rather gloomy all day, and Sunday was almost a write-off with clear blue skies and low sun. The one sunny spot we found came with a time limit as a ruddy great big lamppost shadow edged its way into shot therefore limiting use of that corner. All in all though, it proved to be a belter!! Maybe have it in the Spring next time please Network Rail?

The Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations 2000 have influenced the type of vehicles now able to be used on Rail Replacement services. Once very much the domain of high floor coaches, low-floor buses and coaches fitted with wheelchair lifts have now become the norm.

I'm not saying they are the same, but they do share common attributes. They will do until I can find an identical pair of the old faithful's anyway.

Close enough

Is this pleather bomber exactly like my old one? No. It’s missing the puffed sleeves but has a superior collar. I’m satisfied with the replacement.

Once upon a time, in December 2011, I had an epic thrifting day with Reva of Rags 2 Roses. We hit the Cheviot Goodwill and my style changed forever. She convinced me to buy both a pair of ankle boots and denim shorts. I was sure that ankle boots made my legs look stumpy and that I was too old for short shorts with leggings. She gave me the encouragement to try and now both styles are a staple in my #ootd. I didn’t need much encouragement to also purchase a pleather bomber from H&M, but that also became a frequent element in my outfits. I’m wearing all three of those pictures in this outfit post.

I wore both the faux leather boots and jacket until the PVC coating cracked and flaked off. I replaced the boots with a leather pair from Vionic and the jacket with a leather motorcycle style from BCBG Max Azria. While the boots satisfied, I missed the easy bomber shape of my old jacket.

The thrift gods were with me, again, six years later, because I found a “new” pleather bomber for $8 at the Salvation Army. I intend to wear this one until the plastic, once again, cracks and flakes away.

Jacket, C Magic (thrifted). Dress, Old Navy (thrifted). Leggings, Mono B. Boots, Vionic. Earrings, Francesca’s.

Ebdon of Sidcup was working this rail replacement service from Lewisham when seen at the up side station entrance at New Beckenham. The modern structure was provided following a fire which destroyed the previous structure. The coach is a 1980 Leyland Leopard PSU5C/4R with Duple Dominant coachwork. Rail replacement buses no longer run this way, but use a nearby through road about a 2 minute walk away which involves far fewer turns in an area now lined with parked cars.

And that's why I'm not a fan of backlighting photos...

The weekend of the 4th/5th January 2020 has seen the railway line between Cheshunt and Hertford East/Stansted Airport closed for engineering works, with Greater Anglia providing replacement transport.

The noses of AEM7 and ACS64 locomotives are contrasted in this scene at Amtrak's vast Wilmington shop complex. With the exception of a straggler motor or two used by MARC, the AEM7s have been all but replaced by the new Siemens power to the left.

It should go without saying that this was taken on Amtrak property with permission and escort, via the Farewell to the AEM-7 Wilmington shop tour.

Prior to the introduction of Sanders replacements for the Coasthopper from 29th April 2018, the main service between North Walsham and Holt via Mundesley, Cromer and Sheringham was their service 5. After this date, it continued to operate, but to a much reduced frequency, with alternative facilities provided over much of the route by Coasthopper and the 44/44A/X40 & X44 Group. From 21st April the following year the number of service 5 journeys was reduced still further to one Monday to Saturday westbound early morning run over the full route between North Walsham and Holt, plus an eastbound school day only working from Sheringham High School. At the same time service 9 Holt to Fakenham was extended to/from Sheringham via Upper Sheringham as replacement. Both service 5 journeys are currently in operation, but the eastbound pm run, which now continues through to North Walsham, does not, as far as I can see, appear in any timetable.

Thus this shot of Sanders former Wilts & Dorset Wright bodied Volvo B7RLE type number 508 - HF54 HGN seen passing Wyndham Park on the A149 twixt East Runton and Cromer while working the above school related eastbound journey with the service number 5 displayed is indeed something of a rarity .

As with fleet members 503-512, vehicle 508 previously carried Coasthopper branding on the W&D More livery, but unlike the other examples it retained additional red vinyl around the front dome. However, following accident damage it had been repainted into Sanders standard single deck colour scheme by June 2019.

Emergency replacement of a main power pole when the old pole failed causing a loss of power to nearly 3,000 homes and businesses in Orem for about seven hours. It was a cold day with temps hovering around 7 degrees F. Big thanks to the linemen who worked all day in the bitter cold to get the juice flowing again! Orem, Utah.

A regular performer on rail replacements in recent weeks although the first time I have managed to catch this one on camera.

This Van Hool Volvo has had quite a few operators previously, it carries the livery from its time operating for Stagecoach Highlands which had taken over from Rapson Travel.

It is a somewhat scruffy example compared to the presentation offered by other operators running vehicles on the rail replacement such as CJ Down, Spearings, Oakley's and even First.

I have spent this weekend on rail replacement serving Gloucester, Stonehouse, Stroud, Kemble and Swindon with Southern Coach Lines Van Hool Astron T917 P15 VAR (ex Arriva the Shires YJ58 FHY). The first journey on Sunday 26th July 2020 commenced at Cheltenham Spa and the coach shows its length to good effect here. I shall be on the same duties next weekend.

A rather simple replacement, removing those 2x light blue plates for some 1x1 bracket pieces.
