Following a freight derailment on the Lickey Incline, there was considerable activity at Bromsgrove over the weekend of 17/18 November to rectify the infrastructure damage suffered and restore the line for services to resume. This view taken south of the station shows Class 37/0 37230 waiting with new sleepers to be postioned once the trackbed near the base of the incline was ready. The Bromsgrove Oil Terminal provided the back scene.

2018 BMW M3 with Competition Pack. Top speed is a little lower compared to the V10-powered M6, but everyday usability is infinitely higher, 0-60 is much quicker, the 1/4 mile is much quicker, and the front end feels comparatively weightless, so turn-in is ... divine.

Well, the long anticipated "Woking Weekender" finally arrived and delivered a magnificent array of vehicles operating rail replacement services out to Weybridge, Guildford, Aldershot and Basingstoke throughout both days. No less than 34 different operators provided in excess of 70 buses, coaches and minibuses across both days including three 75-plates. And Burrows Coaches had "both" their East Lancs Darts out - EDIT - STOP PRESS! On Saturday it was LK55ADX and on Sunday it was J8UFX - first with the news!!

Now then, Woking is not the photographer's friend at this time of year due to high-rise office blocks surrounding the station area. Saturday started wet, eased off but remained rather gloomy all day, and Sunday was almost a write-off with clear blue skies and low sun. The one sunny spot we found came with a time limit as a ruddy great big lamppost shadow edged its way into shot therefore limiting use of that corner. All in all though, it proved to be a belter!! Maybe have it in the Spring next time please Network Rail?

the real pussies have gone back home

Although Buses Excetera have lost the Surrey CC contract for Sunday services on the 479 to Stagecoach, on the first day of Stagecoach operation, 2nd September 2018, they were still present on the corridor.

The day saw their buses more gainfully employed running Guildford - London Road - Clandon - Horsley - Bookham - Leatherhead rail replacement, on a day of engineering work and SWR guards striking.

They seemed to be running the entire service, with several of their buses in use. Enviro200 MX08 ZFA is seen here at Bookham station on its way to Guildford.

The start of the complex tale of Horsell and the 28 sees Arriva Guildford & West Surrey 3101 (R301 CMV) at Horsell Crown with a morning working into Guildford from Woking on 28th August 2009.

The next day was the last day of the 28 running into Woking; from Monday 1st September 2009, the route was curtailed at Knaphill Sainsbury's from Guildford, no longer continuing to Knaphill Shops, Goldsworth Park, Horsell and Woking. Connections and through tickets were available at Sainsbury's with the 34/35 and 91 on to Woking.

A replacement came in the form of new Countryliner service 97 - a semi-last minute thing drawn up with some de minimis payment from Surrey CC. This started on 1st September 2009, running from Woking along the old 28 route: Brewery Road, Horsell High Street, Bullbeggars Lane, Sythwood and Golsworth Park Waitrose. It then continued along Clifton Way and then ran a loop, up Robin Hood Road (from the Locksley Drive end - not previously served by buses), Beechwood Road (also not previously served at all), Inkerman Road (not served except school variations), Hermitage Road, down Amstel Way to Clifton Way and back to Woking the way it came. It ran every 40 minutes, using a bus between schools (off the 87), usually Dennis Lance DLO416 (N416 MPN).

An exception to the 28 being curtailed at Sainsbury's was a pm school trip from Woking High School. An afternoon bus did continue from Knaphill Sainsbury's, via its old route (Knaphill, Goldsworth Park) to terminate in Horsell - as illustrated here by Dart 3088 (P288 FPK). www.flickr.com/photos/bobsmithgl100/9129121736

This positioned the bus to run the school journey from the school back via Goldsworth Park and Knaphill, to Sainsbury's, and onward to Guildford. (N.B. during school holidays, the bus didn't go to Horsell and back and had an extra long layover at Knaphill Sainsbury's).

The old morning 28 school journey to the school was withdrawn, however. From Brookwood and Knaphill, this was OK, as the 48 (also serving Brookwood and Knaphill) also had a morning school journey which continued to Woking High School from Woking town centre, as illustrated here by DP3 (RL51 CXD): www.flickr.com/photos/bobsmithgl100/8205346761/ Bizarrely, the 48 never had a pm trip to take the kids back.

While Brookwood and Knaphill were OK to get to school in the mornings, Goldsworth Park was not, as it was only covered by the 28's surviving afternoon school extension. The original plan for kids to catch the 91 to Sythwood and then walk wasn't so popular, so Arriva ended up diverting the morning 134 trip (Camberley - Guildford). The 134 is a variant of the 34, historically running between Knaphill and Woking via Littlewick Road and Horsell (instead of via St Johns) and also serving Christ's College in Bellfields, instead of serving Slyfield Green. The am trip was diverted via Goldsworth Park between Knaphill and Horsell (instead of via Littlewick Road), to restore the am Goldsworth Park to Horsell link. The 134 didn't go right up to the school though - kids had to alight at Horsell High Street and walk. This change was made in about October 2009, if I remember rightly.

The pm 134 trip (Guildford - Camberley) remained running along Littlewick Road, for there was no need for it to run via Goldsworth Park (the 28 had a surviving pm trip, remember).

About six months after starting, changes were made to the 97. While Horsell was still linked to Woking town centre and the nearest supermarket (Goldsworth Park Waitrose), the pensioners preferred Knaphill Sainsbury's. Countryliner thus tweaked the 97. It ran Woking - Horsell - Goldsworth Park Waitrose & Clifton Way as before. However, it then ran all the way along Robin Hood Road, then 91 route to Knaphill Sainsbury's (Barnby Road, Anchor Hill, Knaphill High Street (Knaphill Shops), The Broadway and Redding Way). The return trip was the same in reverse. With the longer route, the frequency was thinned from every 40 minutes to hourly.

The story isn't even half way complete yet though...

Surrey CC started a bus review in 2010. Phase 1 covered the west of the Woking borough (among other areas), with service changes from 28th August 2010. Plans went out to public consultation for comments to be made.

The original proposals set out for Horsell was for a new service, numbered 82, and running hourly, to run Woking - Brewery Road - Horsell High Street, turn at Littlewick Roundabout, and then go back. The 97 was stated as going to be reviewed after this. (N.B. Horsell's other bus route, the 73, was unaffected and stayed the same throughout.)

In the end though, the 82 never came to fruition. Instead, the 28 was extended from Knaphill Sainsbury's, back over its old route (Knaphill Shops, Goldsworth Park and Horsell), this time with Surrey CC support. This allowed the 97 to be withdrawn. Only off peak journeys ran through Guildford - Woking on the 28. At other times, journeys from Guildford continued to turn at Knaphill Sainsbury's. Additional short journeys ran from Woking - Horsell to support the service there. Naturally, these short journeys had to turn, and used Littlewick Roundabout to do so. Bizarrely, the off-peak journeys which ran through were also routed to serve Littlewick Roundabout, necessitating the most pointless double run in history - serving two bus stops in a hedge no one ever uses, and going back again. (This was the only difference between the original pre-2009 28 route through Horsell.) The am 134 continued to run via Goldsworth Park, to cover the morning school demand.

But then...!

Surrey CC bus review phase 2 saw Surrey Heath borough covered, including the 48. So, from September 2011, things changed again. The 28 was diverted between Knaphill and Woking via St Johns and Star Hill instead of Goldsworth Park and Horsell (i.e. following the old 48, bar Hermitage Estate which got the 35 routed round it rather than the 28).

Swapping, the 48 was diverted between Knaphill and Woking via Horsell, instead of Hermitage Estate and St Johns. Rather than running via Goldsworth Park like the 28, it runs via Littlewick Road. The service was also axed on Saturdays, reduced to two-hourly and transferred from Countryliner to Dickson Travel.

At the same time, the 134 was removed from Horsell (and Goldsworth Park), instead following normal 34 route between Knaphill and Woking (via St Johns), as illustrated by Enviro 4012 (GN58 BTU): www.flickr.com/photos/bobsmithgl100/9125370904/ A morning journey on the 48 runs via Goldsworth Park (instead of Littlewick Road) to cover the 134's old am link for school kids.

The 28 retained its pm school journey from Woking High School in Horsell via Goldsworth Park, picking up its normal route at Knaphill. It also had a new am trip, running on from Woking town centre to Horsell on schooldays only (like the 48 used to do).

From 23rd September 2013, the pm 28 school trip was revised to run in service from Woking to Horsell (Woking High School), and then continue via Goldsworth Park, as before. The trip runs via Horsell regardless of whether it's the school term or not, giving an extra pm Woking - Horsell trip to support the 48. It only runs round to the school on schooldays though - on holidays running straight up Horsell High Street.

And that brings up up the current situation in February 2015.

Who knows what this year's Surrey CC bus cuts will do to the service here...?
