Suzanne Vega is one of my favorite singers. This song Luka was so impressive that I couldn't get it out of my head after I heard it for the first time. Last year I read Dennis Lehane's The Kenzie-Gennaro novels. I couldn't help relate the song to the main characters' stories, Patrick Kenzie's childhood and Angela Gennaro's marriage. Dark, sad... Like the tears on the lotus flower's petals...

I had created the Wombo images a while ago but never used them. This is a combo of 2 of those, plus smaller elements masked in from 3 others. The framed picture on the wall (left) and on the easel are 2 other Wombo creations. The blending, masking, cloning were all done in Pixelmator Pro as well as the torn corner on the wall picture. Light and color were enhanced with PicLight.

There are so many different species of fish to be found on coral reefs, it's no wonder the naming committee started to get a bit desperate the day they spotted these beauties. They are about 22cm/9 inches in length, swim very close to the surface and are one of the most frequently seen fish on the reef. The name apparently relates to the five black stripes, although a brief internet search indicates that Sergeant Majors in the army wear six gold stripes. So that's a fail....
I wanted to work with this donut in the snow one more time, but from a different angle. This has the forest across Trout Lake in the background with the reflections touching the frosted area instead of the snow.
As well, the rock and log within the donut are much more prominent making them more crucial to the success of the photo. And finally, although it is a winter shot, there is warmth to be found in the colors of the forest such as the subtle reds.

Managed a quick trip to the beach in order to see if California is OPEN yet. Most coastal access remains closed, with all parking areas blocked.
But I found this Guy racing around a rest stop, and managed to get a shot before he raced off.
For a generation of viewers, the familiar “beep, beep” of Warner Brothers’ cartoon Roadrunner was the background sound of Saturday mornings.
(Although commonly quoted as "meep meep", Warner Brothers, the current owner of all trademarks relating to the duo, lists "beep, beep" as the Road Runner's sound, along with "meep, meep." )
Despite the cartoon character’s perennial victories over Wile E. Coyote, real-life coyotes present a real danger to Roadrunners; Coyotes can reach a top speed of 43 miles an hour—more than twice as fast as roadrunners.
Roadrunner can outrace a human, kill a rattlesnake, and thrive in the harsh landscapes of the Desert Southwest. Roadrunners reach two feet from sturdy bill to white tail tip, with a bushy blue-black crest and mottled plumage that blends well with dusty shrubs. As they run, they hold their lean frames nearly parallel to the ground and rudder with their long tails.
Roadrunners have evolved a range of adaptations to deal with the extremes of desert living. Like seabirds, they secrete a solution of highly concentrated salt through a gland just in front of each eye, which uses less water than excreting it via their kidneys and urinary tract. Moisture-rich prey including mammals and reptiles supply them otherwise-scarce water in their diet. Both chicks and adults flutter the un-feathered area beneath the chin (gular fluttering) to dissipate heat.
Roadrunners eat poisonous prey, including venomous lizards and scorpions, with no ill effect, although they’re careful to swallow horned lizards head-first with the horns pointed away from vital organs. Roadrunners can also kill and eat rattlesnakes, often in tandem with another roadrunner: as one distracts the snake by jumping and flapping, the other sneaks up and pins its head, then bashes the snake against a rock. If it’s is too long to swallow all at once, a roadrunner will walk around with a length of snake still protruding from its bill, swallowing it a little at a time as the snake digests.
Based on banding records, the oldest roadrunner was at least 7 years old.

When Atlanta built this octagon-shaped public library in 1908, it did so through community support rather than receiving a grant from the Carnegie Foundation as many other communities did at the time.
The library design combines the Neoclassical with an octagonal plan, an uncommon mixture of styles. The building's eight sides are all symmetrical except for the front, which is broken by a classical portico with Doric columns and a round arched entrance. The library is topped by a red tile roof.
The library was designed by Paul O. Moratz (1866-1939), a German-born architect who grew up and lived as an adult in nearby Bloomington, Illinois. Moratz is best remembered for his designs of concert halls, schools, libraries, hospitals, and private residences.
The Atlanta Public Library represents a well-maintained example of turn-of-the-century public construction, combining two significant architectural styles: the Octagon Mode and Neo-Classical Revival. The influence of Chicago's 1893-94 Columbia Exposition and the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo resulted in the widespread use of the Neo-Classical style in public and quasi-public buildings throughout the nation. The Octagon plan relates historically to the Octagon homes espoused by Orson Squire Fowler in the mid-1800s.

The Swiss Way relates the history of Switzerland surrounded by a scenic landscape. The trail was constructed as a joint project of the cantons on the occasion of the 700th anniversary celebrations of the Confederation (1291-1991). It begins on the Rütli Meadow, where the Confederation was founded, and ends in Brunnen in the Swiss Expatriates Square (Platz der Auslandschweizer).
The house relates to the middle 19th Century; its last owner was Kuryk Mykola Vasylovych. The house comprises of three parts – a house, a mudroom and a small house. Its external walls aren’t covered, only strips are painted around its windows and doors. Such strips are specific for houses from Vyzhytskyj and Putylivskyj districts of Chernivtsi Region. Art painting and strips are very distinct decorations for houses of lowland Bukovyna. The house’s joyful interior is created by grapes depicted on the stove, around windows and on pokut (the sacred place of a traditional home). The most widespread patterns in Korytne village are grapes, arrow-wood leaves, hops and crosses on bases.
The house is built of smereka and poplar wood, its area equals to 58.8 square meters.

It relates to 18th Century. As of the time of transfer to the museum, the house was the oldest in the village and belonged to Oros family. The house has two premises: house and mudroom. It is one of the most ancient types of house planning in Zakarpattia. Walls of the house are constructed with wide oak cut blocks. Its high four-sloping roof is covered with straw.
This house is the oldest Zakarpattia house in our museum. It displays specific features of national building in valley of Tereblia-river and the middle reaches of Tysa River. The house’s area is 35.4 square meters.

When arriving at Sargeant Beach, I could not help but notice the most unusual item that had floated ashore. A tree branch had lodged itself in the rocks on the beach in a most usual, and peculiar way.
It was fun working on this articulated and oddly shaped newcomer to Sargeant Beach. I wanted to illustrate that its final resting place, left it reaching for the sky. That it still longs to get back to the ocean. and how it relates to its surrounding area. While a forested area is close by, it seems to hover over distant islands. And how its unique form, differs from the rest.

The epitome of Catalan culture is the Liceo Opera House. One of its most glamorous settings is the Hall of Mirrors. It has allegorícal paintings on the ceiling with texts relating to opera and music Most of today's opera goes end up there during intermissions.
The River Ver in Hertfordshire is a chalk stream and has cut, modestly I should say, into the surrounding limestone - just enough to create a path through the Chiltern Hills, and enough for the Romans to build a road here connecting London with the North. The history of the village of Markyate is entirely shaped by this road (and its successors) and all the functions relating to the transport of goods and people. Some houses such as these ones in the foreground have crept up the flanks of the river ("Pickford Hill" in this case), but most stayed down in the valley ground. Up on the hills you would find farms and agriculture. It is also true that small industries have moved in - together with lots of interesting people who decided to leave the big city.

As a freelancer I can relate to this image, the struggle to make living using antiquated equipment, the long hours and stressful delays.
I made the image in taxi on the way back from a meeting with a potential client on the banks of the Cairo Nile, we were stuck in the mother of all traffic jams, the driver was tired and stressed, I was, for once content as I had eaten fish and concluded what I thought was a successful meeting. Now I look back, the real success was this image, which is one of my favourites.

I had to 'relocate' a part of this tiny spider's web, when he spun it over the opening to access the bird feeder. (He was about 3-4mm)
I carefully took the one side and attached it to the same shrub.
He seemed fine with it, but moved the location the next day.

i think its from the Adi Granth where Baba Farids poems were included. that is what i love about Sikhism, it is written by many saints from several religions. so much for one dominant religion over others! the Sikhs honor all religions that relate to God.

I assume a lot of people who see this photo will relate to the circumstances in which it was taken - getting intel about a very interesting train, hopping on an overnight train journey in a normal coach for over 600km, going to the desired spot and finding out the train had already passed it. By sheer coincidence we managed to change course and chase it to a different spot.
Here a loaded sand train from Kotlarnia can be seen upon leaving the post EW (near the Rybnik power plant) while heading towards the station in Leszczyny. Machines on duty that day were 21D-008 (ex-TEM2-093) and 21D-006 (ex-TEM2-277). In Leszczyny, the train enters the public PKP railway network, and it will continue from there onwards to Katowice Murcki. The sand from the Kotlarnia mine will be used for construction works on the railway line, which suffered a slump due to the ongoing coal mining in the region. Such places, where terrain is visibly shifted or slumped are commonplace in Silesia and the railway needs to account for that by regularly maintaining embankments on the railroads. Such sand transports, leading out of Kotlarnia only happen less than 10 times a year and I have been lucky enough to have photographed a lot of them in 2024. Those pictures, along with their stories, you can see in our TEM2 album.
This post is a good occasion to talk about more developements in the Kotlarnia sand mine. The production there is still being scaled down and an end is innevitable. The quarry does no more night shifts (the pictured train has been loaded the day before and waited for the crew on the morning of 18.07.2025). Additionally, KPK has started selling a large chunk of its rolling stock (either for scrap or further reusing), and it seems like their main souce of income nowadays is lending TEM2 locomotives to various private carriers, who seek heavy diesel locomotives, which are now in high demand.

Conventional photography by definition relates to the surface of things. This is because it is a visual record of light reflected from the surface of things. There are, of course, other forms of photography connected to forms of radiation other than visible light (x-rays e.g.). But in general, our photos show surfaces, not what is underneath. You would need to be told that underneath, just where the silhouette of the WWI soldier stands, the River Ver is crossing the road - in a pipe and still very small. From there, it flows via Redbourn to St. Albans, the Roman city which in antiquity was called Verulamium. And here comes the thing: our minds are not satisfied with surfaces only. Even if surfaces are all we have got visually, we still try to extract "meaning" from the image, that is, we go underneath or "behind" the image. We are built like that. We human beings are extremely good at making associations. We are creators of meaning. Most of us, I guess, would have no problems with connecting the soldier's silhouette with the large lorry to the right and tell a story. It is just not true that we believe only those things we can see. Our world of imagination is more like a dancer using the surface as a playground. Leica M Mono, Voigtlander CS 2.2/50.

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.
These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.
I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.
Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.
