Mungret Monastery (The Abbey Church)

Limerick, Co. Limerick, Republic of Ireland

Referred to as 'The Abbey Church' the building as it appears today was neither part of the original monastery nor a later religious order. It was built as the parish church to serve the manor and parish of Mungret. There are very few surviving records relating to this church. Following the transfer of the monastic holdings to the Bishop of Limerick, the income from the church (the living) was conferred on the Cathedral and became the living of the Dean of the Cathedral Chapter (the senior prelate). It was most likely that a curate would actually have been in residence. After 1571 the Abbey came under the control of the Church of Ireland. A report from 1611 stated that the church and chancel were in good repair. There is a reference to a vicar in 1752, but by 1781 it was no longer roofed. In 1880 the 'Abbey Church' was vested in the Office of Public Works to become a National Monument due to its 'architectural character and antiquity'. The surrounding graveyards were vested in the Local Authority.

Following Henry VIII's break with Rome and the Reformation of the church in England, the Church of Ireland was established as the official Church of the State in Ireland in 1536, a situation which continued until 1871 when the Irish Church Act (1869) changed it to a voluntary Christian community. The post reformation clergy continued to worship in the existing parish churches. This was the case in Mungret with the Church of Ireland worshiping in the medieval parish church. There is a reference to a vicar as late as 1752, but certainly by the 1780s there was no long a roof on the building. The congregation would have been served by the nearby parishes in the City of Kilkeedy. The Board of First Fruits was set up in 1711 to build and improve the churches and rectories in Ireland. It was funded by taxes on clerical incomes which were, in turn, funded by tithes. From 1777 it was supplemented by grants from parliament. In 1822 Mungret Parish received a grant of 300 pounds towards the building of a church in Mungret which was consecrated in 1825. This was designed by the architect James Pain (c1179-1877) who was appointed provincial architect for Munster to the Board of First Fruits. The architect's drawings, on which the reconstruction is based, are held in the library of the Representative Church Body of the Church of Ireland. The was designed to hold 100, mostly with box pews and a distinctive feature was the octagonal tower at the west end.

The Glebe house (now known as Mount Mungret) was also built with a grant in 1826. The church would have served the Bindons (landowners in the area) whose estate was sold in 1851. Seventy acres of the estate was bought by the Church of Ireland Bishop of Limerick, as one of 5 trustees, to create an agricultural school and model farm which opened in 1858 and was the first school at Mungret College. By 1870 the parishioners of Mungret had decreased to just ten and services were only being held 4 times a year. It was amalgamated with St. Michael's parish in Limerick City. The glebe house was sold in 1874. The church closed in 1877 bringing to an end a long tradition of formal worship in Mungret. The roof was removed in 1900. Finally in 1929 the stonework was sold and used in the Catholic Presbytery in Raheen.

The church is in three parts, chancel or choir, nave, and residence. The chancel measures 5.2m wide x 14.93m long internally. It has an original two-light east window with sandstone surrounds. There were 4 windows on the south wall and one on the north. There is a piscina (water basin) on the south wall. There is nothing left of the chancel arch; the current opening is modern and the wall is largely rebuilt. In the 15th century the north and south walls of the chancel were thickened externally; this included a base batter and projections at the east end in the form of buttresses. These works blocked three of the south windows and the north window. The third window on the south wall was altered to a twin-light built of limestone. At the west end the walls were thickened even more to provide an upstairs room which had a chamber at the south containing a garderobe (toilet). Many of the alterations to the nave may also be 15th century, though the building itself appears much older. It measures 7.11m wide x 10.46m long internally. There were opposing doors in the north and south (now blocked) walls. There was an upstairs room at the western end which appears to have been connected to the residence at the west.

The residence is a two story building with a belfry tower. It had an external door at the sourh-east corner and another at the north-east from the nave. The belfry is a narrow tower 12.5m high of 4 floors with a parapet. A straight stone stair rises to the first floor. The remaining floors were of wood supported on ledges on the internal walls and accessed by internal ladders.

Many lines of code written today, funny all in php and not much relating to WordPress.

Two theories relate to the existence of Doctors Gate. One, is this ancient trackway was built by the Romans to link the forts of Ardotalia in Glossop with Navio at Brough in the Hope Valley. The second theory is that during the Medieval period Doctor John Talbot who became vicar of Glossop in 1491 had the trackway built to link the Talbot family seat in Sheffield to Glossop. Hence the name Doctors Gate – gate meaning road or trackway.
