C-FUPP - Canadair T-33AN Silver Star 3 - Jet Aircraft Museum
in RCAF "Red Knight" colours with military markings RCAF 133573
at London International Airport (YXU) during the 2018 London Air Show
c/n T33-573 - built in 1957
The Red Knight was a Canadian air force aerobatic display aircraft that operated from 1958 to 1969. The red-painted Silver Star performed loops, rolls, Cuban 8s, horizontal 360s, inverted flight, and high speed passes at airshows around North America, often appearing as an opening act for or in conjunction with the Golden Hawks display team and later the Golden Centennaires, Canada's contemporary aerobatic teams.
''Built by Victory Aircraft Ltd. Canada (1945) (c/n ????? - CA&SM) and test flown by March 1945, KB944 flown to England; arrived in UK 8.3.45 at #32 M.U. St Athan, Glamorgan. It was delivered overseas to No. 425(B) Alouette Squadron RCAF (as code ‘KW-K’) in May 1945, but arrived too late to take part in bombing operations, returned to Canada via the Azores and Gander on 15.6.45 as part of Tiger Force, Wing #663, Debert, N.S.; stored at Ft. McLeod in 1945 and was placed in long-term storage the same year.''
''By 1950 was converted to Mk. X S** by Fairey Aviation, Eastern Passage, N.S.
S** : Standard
In 1952, it served with No. 404 Maritime Patrol Squadron RCAF in Greenwood, Nova Scotia for a short period of time.''
The RCAF restored the aircraft (KB944) in 1964, applying the nose art and squadron markings of a RCAF aircraft (KB760) from No. 428 SQN. The Lancaster was placed in the RCAF's historic aircraft collection in 1964, and was transferred to the CA&SM, later that year. This is the most complete Lancaster in existence, remaining very close to its wartime condition.
* HISTORICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE NOSE ART AND MARKINGS APPLIED ON KB944 :
The KB944 reproduction of the nose art and markings comes from AVRO Lancaster B. Mk. X, RCAF reg. KB760 / coded NA-P – Dates of service June 1944 to September 1945 (No. 428 (B) ‘’GHOST’’ SQN RCAF). ''The tiny bombs painted on the port side of the KB944 nose reminds the number of sorties KB760 made. ‘’By the time ‘’Winnie’’ / ''The Lover'' (B X KB760 / NA-P) of 428 SQN returned to Canada, it was liberally bedecked with nose art. Flg. Off R L Boyle was the KB760’s skipper for many of her 72 operations. Known as ‘P for panic’ on the SQN, KB760 ended up with crew nicknames and sometimes portraits adjacent to their positions… (via Bruce Robertson)’’.
Now preserved in wartime camouflage and marked to represent #428(B) SQN with code 'NA-P', KB944 was the least modified of all the surviving Lancasters during RCAF post-war service.
