I've started a project of sifting through my dad's old negatives, some of which date to 1938, and making contact sheets so I can get a better look at images that I might like to scan.

Every once in a while I come across a picture that's a bit of a head-scratcher… Why do I have a feeling something isn't quite on the level here?

There are other photos of my father wearing a cap with the same insignia, ID'd as being from the "#3 Wireless School, Winnipeg, Manitoba" in 1943.

Aero Gatineau-Ottawa 2024

RCAF Pre-WWII shot taken at Winnipeg, Manitoba of early training airplane called an Avro Tutor. Photo from the album of R. H. Dibnah.

Built in 1960 this circular building housed a "Wimpy" for many years before being passed from operator to operator whilst suffering inevitable neglect. It was listed by the Department of Culture Media & Sport (DCMS) in the 1990's and restored by Michael Aukett Architects for developers Arrowcroft in 2002. One unique aspect of it's character is that it had no customer toilets fitted (only staff ones down a set of metal spiral stairs) so the public had to walk up the precinct to use the ones there - even post refurbishment they have to use the ones below Central Library.

RCAF 17515 - Canadair C-54GM North Star 1 ST - Royal Canadian Air Force

at the Canada Aviation & Space Museum, Ottawa Rockcliffe Airport (YRO)

This North Star (c/n 122) was manufactured in 1948 by Canadair Limited in Montreal, Quebec and was delivered to the RCAF in March of that year. It spent its entire career with No. 426 Squadron.

This North Star was one of two that took part in a ceremony to mark the official "stand down" of the type in December 1965. It was retired and transferred to the Museum

in 1966. It is the only North Star left in the world and fund-raising has started now to finance a complete restoration of the aircraft.

Per ardua ad astra ("Through adversity to the stars" or "Through struggle to the stars") is the motto of the Royal Air Force and other Commonwealth air forces such as the RAAF, RCAF, RNZAF, and the SAAF. It dates from 1912 and was used by the newly formed Royal Flying Corps.

A comic Canadian post card from the Second World War. The days when the observer's noggin was the "onboard computer". And to add insult to injury, after being saddled with a multitude of tasks, the observer's badge of an O with a single wing was the object of some ribald humour.
