Backyard Shots field trip to Historic Oakland Cemetery
Atlanta, Georgia USA
Sunday, July 31,2011
Some pictures from my field trip to the Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta with the Backyard Shots group led by David Akoubian.
Details of the image
The Austell Mausoleum was built for General Alfred Austell, a Brigadier-General in the Georgia State Militia during the Civil War. Though he was successful and wealthy before the war, his businesses were ruined at the close of the conflict. General Austell rebuilt his fortune and went on to co-found the Atlanta National Bank (successor to Wachovia Bank) and was a director of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The city of Austell, Georgia is named for him.
The mausoleum structure was constructed in 1883 at a cost of $16,000. (In today's dollars - using the Conumer Price index to calculate, that would be aproximately $292,000.00) It is made of granite and marble and designed in the Gothic Revival style. This site is also the resting place of Albert E. Thornton, Austell's son-in-law who was president of Elberton Oil Mills, and other family members of the Austell, Thornton and Kennedy lines.
Originally called the Atlanta Graveyard, the initial plot of land was purchased by the City of Atlanta in 1850. Oakland is located east of downtown Atlanta in an area that was rural farmland at the time it was founded. Large US cities of the 19th century typically had crowded, unattractive cemeteries centered in the urban areas. Oakland is an early example of the "rural garden cemetery", designed in a park-like setting landscaped with walking paths and beautiful shady areas to sit and relax.
The cemetery expanded rapidly during and just after the Civil War to accommodate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the Battle of Atlanta as well as other action in the area. Many stones marking the dead of the War Between the States dot the grounds and there is also a memorial called the "Lion of Atlanta" which commemorates 3,000 unknown Confederate soldiers.
Oakland Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places (#76000627) in 1976.

Playing around with a few of the new Topaz filters, this quirky castle lends itself well to the atmospheric feel of this hi-key filter.
Huguenot Memorial Park is at the southern end of the chain of barrier islands that make up Florida's coast north of the St. Johns. Huguenot covers the northern end of the mouth of the St. Johns River and the Atlantic seashore to the south of Little Talbot Island. Admission to the park also allows vehicle access to the beach, though though exposure to the tides is at your own risk.

I really liked how this photo came out. Most of the photos I took revolved around this chained post. I really like how the detail came out. When I first took this photo I though most of the came out blurry (I could have been I was a little light head from the walking). I also had a blistering headache and couldn't get down low enough. I had to rely on the camera display rather then the view finder (which I rarely do). I did boost the contrast and definition in post and did the black and white conversion, but otherwise this was pretty much how the photo came out of the camera.

It's not often that you get the entire Blackpool beach to yourself, but after a heavy rain shower everyone had headed for cover, the aftermath left some really well structured cloud formations against the setting sun.

"I try to always be a gentleman
I try to always be a better friend
Lately I’ve been feeling half a man
like maybe I should be more who I am
Maybe I should fuck something up good
Or maybe I should act like someone bad
I try to live my life like David does
But something always feels just slightly off
I’m young and maybe that’s why days to me
they seem like opportunities to test my reach
Adopt some ugly habits that are bad for me
and treat some others not so equally
If I thought I knew me well it’s clear as can be
that things are gonna change like a hundred degrees
If I thought I knew me well it’s plain to see
that things are gonna change like a hundred degrees"

This is only one of my favourite songs. I think the versus really apply to how I feel. I'm truly greateful for the path I'm on right now. My life has been a interesting roller coaster with many ups and downs. Yeah the down times sucks but it makes the times when I'm going back up even better. Thanks for the support and kind words. I can be really bad a reply to comments and messages but it can be hard to find the right words. I've been pushing myself to be more like someone I want to be rather than someone who it's easy to be. Well enough has been said for today. I hope everyone is having a ridiculously great week!
