A project of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (www.railstrails.org), this 8.5-mile gravel path is built on a former railroad bed. I ride my mountain bike here a lot and usually have it to myself, or nearly so. In the background is a modern covered bridge that now stands on the site of an old railroad trestle over a small creek.
Discarded rails by a NorfolkSouthern railroad siding in Salem, Virginia. I discovered that they're marked with a year and city or state of manufacture. The oldest I found was marked "Steelton 1953." Steelton is both a city and a rail manufacturer in Pennsylvania. Steelton later became a division of the now defunct Bethlehem Steel. Although Bethlehem Steel closed, Steelton is still operating.

A project long postponed, the roof rack rails are finally installed, and await a Mill Creek kayak to transport.
This sits somewhere in the graveyard for trains. If you want to visit it then head to the Portland Roundhouse and wear clothes that look like you are working outside and then just nod at workers as they pass you by. You can shoot here all day as long as you are not an ass.
