Centuries ago, immense naval cannons rested on these rails waiting for enemy (often English or Dutch) ships. Today, these cannons are stored elsewhere; mainly to protect them from the harsh weathering that quickly oxidizes iron.
Supported by Gov. Tim Kaine, the Rails to Trails project would embrace areas where the railway once lay and it would become a haven for walking and biking activities. In the 1900's, the Old Train Depot stood near what is the current day Mendota Baptist Church.
